Pre-Sim - Small Beginnings

The Transport ship SS Telembi dropped out warp at its designated rendezvous point with the USS Memorial thirteen minutes ahead of schedule. The Memorial was already on location as expected and the Telembi moved into transporter range, the Bridge crew contacted the Starfleet vessel, exchanged basic pleasantries with the Memorial crew, and transmitted their cargo and passenger compliment and transfer orders.

Sitting in one of the seats a young ensign was glued to a PaDD. He had spent most of the three-day trip reading through the information on the PaDD. On day one he mostly read the ship’s schematics, memorizing where each hallway led and each and every access point be it door, turbolift, or Jefferies tube. Before leaving Earth two weeks prior he’d used a Holodeck to walk the halls and get a feel for it the size and scope of the Battlecruiser design but that didn’t mean that he could skimp on his reading. For the Second day, he mostly went through the information regarding the combat capabilities of the ship and its auxiliary vessels and refreshed his memory on the Cutlass Mark II Starfighter. During flight school, he’d trained on both the Templar-Class and Cutlass Class fighters as well as familiarization with the Compsognathus fighters. He was excited by the prospect of getting actual experience flying a starfighter. He did wonder how his duties would change as his primary duty assignment was as a Security Officer.

Today he’d mostly been reading about his team in the Security Department, putting faces to names. He was curious to find that he’d be serving with a Joined Trill, he’d known Trill in the Academy but had only ever met one joined Trill, his Aunt Neema was joined to a rather old symbiont. Next, he’d focused on his department head. Interestingly she’d served on Outpost 42 just a few years before his brother was assigned there, but there hadn’t been any overlap. He only read through her basic profile to be certain of any facts that might come up. She seemed to be a competent officer with an impressive record, she was an experienced officer, he’d been concerned that he’d have a Department Head as fresh as he was as an Officer.

Next, he read through the other Department heads and Command Staff, an Andorian Chief Engineer of similar standing as the Security Chief, he only glanced past that file, he’d never completely understood the Starfleet Engineers, they seemed like an exclusive club of Wizards with a penchant for tinkering with things that shouldn’t be tinkered with, of course, it was the engineers that gave Starfleet its impressive reputation. He was just wary of starship engineers as he’d had more than a few wrenches and other engineering equipment thrown at him for damaging Starfleet Property through some moderately risky action or other

“Trying to memorize what people to avoid Maple?” A voice said behind the young ensign. Tyr Bragason turned around to look at a young officer in the blue unform of a Scientist, NE Talbot had been a year behind him at the Academy but they’d struck up a friendship during Týr’s final year at the Academy, so they were now both assigned at the same time “No” Tyr said defensively, although he frowned at being called by his call sign, he did not like his callsign. “I just hope that the Lieutenant hasn’t heard about me is all” He looked back at the PaDD “You mean you hope he hasn’t heard about you crashing three different shuttlecraft in the Academy?” Talbot said with a wide grin. Tyr scowled at his friend or tried to as his friend’s grin was very infectious “The first time was my fault but the other time was a mechanical failure. And the water landing in the Rhyne doesn’t count” He used the PaDD to hit Talbot who shied away laughing “If you say so”

Tyr returned his attention to the PaDD and moved on to the next Senior staff member, the Ships Medical Officer, he’d never met a Terraian before, in fact, he was just vaguely aware that the species existed, having read some news report about them some time ago. He was curious what kind of people they were. She would be his first stop after he got his gear stowed away so he didn’t need to wait long to find out.

The final Department Head was the Ships Science Officer and the highest-ranking non-command officer: Commander Janzen, he’d been a member of the crew for a long time and was also Married to the ship’s Captain. His sister Freyja had been quite excited when he said he’d been assigned on the same ship as Janzen, he wasn’t sure why, he’d mostly just let her babble on, it had something to do with the Delta Quadrant, although that was something he’d found intriguing, he’d heard stories about the Starfleet Missions to the Delta Quadrant since the return of the legendary Voyager, he’d only been two when the Voyager returned so for his generation the Delta Quadrant was a far less alien part of the Galaxy than it had been for his eldest brothers generation.

Finally, he hit the final point of his reading assignment, the Memorials Captain, Tralla Sh’Zoarhi. She’d commanded the Memorial for years and as far as he was aware she had a good reputation back with Starfleet Command, he’d heard through the family grapevine that his cousin had served there not too long ago and the usually reserved officer had been moderately positive regarding her, which was as good a recommendation as he could hope for.

Suddenly he was being slapped with great enthusiasm on his head, it was more annoying than painful “What the he..” the curse died on his tongue as his head turned in the direction Talbor was pointing, they could see the USS Memorial out of the small viewports. Tyr whistled “There are certainly bigger ships with bigger guns but that is still an impressive design,” He said as the Telembi approached the much larger Starfleet Vessel slowly “Well Ensign Talbor” He said standing up, grabbing his duffel bag from the overhead compartment “Well Ensign Tyr” Talbor answered with a large grin. as the two officers joined a smattering of other Starfleet Crew that were assigned to join the Memorial “I guess it’s time work for a living” Tyr said answering his friend’s grin with one of his own.

A few minutes later the group that Tyr and Talbor were assigned to was transported over to the Memorial. It took Tyr a moment to reorient himself, the slight change in Gravity and the new location. He was mostly used to the planetary transporter system on Earth and only through his Starfleet Training he’d gotten used to the ship-to-ship transports. He took a step down the transporter ramp “Hey Maple, I’m going straight to the Medbay for my checkup” Talbor announced as he jogged out of the transporter room. The transporter gave Tyr an amused smile that he answered with a shrug. “Yeah, I’m going to toss my stuff into my quarters then head down there.” Tyr answered just before his friend left.
