Bridge operations had been routine for several weeks of patrol duty. Sector G27 was on the very edge of Federation space, laying deep in the beta quadrant where smaller and smaller colonies stretched out into a void. Merchant and cargo ships were fewer than average, too, though there were plenty of lanes traveling between colonies of the Federation, the Klingon Empire, and independent trading stations and worlds reaching back into a mostly unexplored void. For better or for worse the sector had been quiet.

The USS Memorial was the tactical presence in the region, as such it coordinated security reports for Star-Fleet. Every Federation ship and colony in the sector copied Lieutenant Rhodes on security routine security and incident reports. That information stream just had more of the usual - delayed cargo ships, reports of anomalous readings, criminal activity reports filed by constables and other security chiefs. While no active situations had arisen since the Memorial arrived in the sector, the previous two years have shown a marked increase in reports of piracy rising in tandem with the growth of some colony worlds like North Point and Tyche IV. Piracy on the part of unidentified assailants stealing some cargo had occurred at least 11 times in two years while there were a further four reports of missing cargo vessels. Frequent ion storms put the cause of those disappearances in doubt, though, at times they were even rough on the region’s outposts. There were multiple cargo ships in the sector reporting information to Rhodes, none had made an urgent report to him in weeks.

This sector coordination also meant that Lieutenant Commander Vaughn had access to the research status of a couple science vessels in the area. The USS Ceidrwin and USS Resolution were each posted to the sector. The Ceidrwin was researching a nebula over 2 light-years in diameter, the sector was known for those frequent ion storms and the ship was investigating whether that nebula played a part in that. It had been more than a week since Vaughn had received an update from them due to communications interference. The Resolution was closer, a team from that ship was studying a pre-warp civilization while the ship hid behind one of its moons.

It was during one of these bridge routines that the ops panel lit up and beeped with a transmission from Captain Ikos of the USS Resolution, still in the Tyche system. The hail was marked urgent and was accompanied by a data transmission - a stream of raw sensor data buffering into the comm system, likely something for them review.

OOC: Looking forward to playing out this sim with everyone! Please don’t hesitate to contact me via form if you’d like to get in touch, or I can also be found on the Discord server. A quick note about my style, while I like playing NPCs, I usually try to let others play most NEs to handle things their player characters can’t. I can make NEs to move threads along, but if you see an opportunity to jump in with one, feel free.

Tralla was in her seat on the Bridge letting out a long yawn Patrol duty was Boring to the Andorian this was not what she was expecting to be doing as a captain though deep down she knew that Patrol duty was still very important and necessary work she rubbed her eyes another migraine from her implants hitting her as the alert blared “Report” she caalled her antenna curlled in showing that she was in pain

Tralla

“Cap’n” JT started as he read the data coming through “Looks like we are receiving something from the Resolution. Its marked urgent. Whoah, looks like a lot of data.” he added as he tried to make sense of what was coming in.

JT

Its probably an update of their mission feed it to Mr. Vaughns console” she sighed “Though why they are marking it urgent is a mystery” she added looking up finally focusing on the black void of space on the Viewscreen helped

Tralla

“Aye, sending it over now” JT replied while hitting the appropriate commands into the console.

JT

“Awaiting download, Sir,” Wendell said. “The Resolution is hiding behind one of a planet’s moons as it studies a pre-warp civilization.”

In truth, Wendell loved these missions. No combat, lots of practice science applications at work here.

OOC: Whoops! Sorry, replied to the wrong post.

IC: Lieutenant Commander Vaughn’s console lit up with sensor readings from the USS Resolution - the ship was hidden behind a moon with strong electromagnetic radiation from the planet interacting with metals in the moon’s core. What seemed to be sensor errors extended well beyond the moon, however - energy signatures kept appearing at the edge of their short-range sensors, though nothing was registering visually.

An Andorian Captain appeared on the viewscreen with his bridge crew also in view. “Hello, USS Memorial, this is Captain Ikos of the Resolution. We’ve been suffering a series of malfunctions in our communications system, whatever it is may also be affecting our sensors,” he said. “My engineer’s on it, but, the sensor glitches - they’ve been persistent, even when our comm system gets back up online for brief periods. I do not mean to be suspicious, but, this is a highly sensitive observation mission and losing contact with the away team for more than a day is threatening us to end the project. My Chief Engineer assures me the system problems should be fixed within the next day, but I would like to request the USS Memorial’s presence in the system until we’re back up and running. Something isn’t sitting right with me,” the Captain said. The image suddenly went hazy and cut out for a moment, though, the interruption only lasted for a second. The Captain sighed in annoyance and leaned forward in his chair.

It was then that the comm panel beeped with another urgent alert. The USS Memorial was receiving a distress signal from the SS Anne, one of the merchant ships registered to be travelling in the sector.

GM Roadrunner

“We’re getting a distress call, Captain.” Jasper said, bringing up on his station. “SS Anne. Merchant ship.”
