Jack didn’t say anything until he finished his scans “It’s a perfectly adequate ship, I have no complaints” He said as he put the tricorder back in his holster “The crew is not overly accident-prone and the Captain is cautious but not overly so. For personal relations you’d have to ask” He paused for a moment “A people person” He said simply and then blinked for the first time in a noticeable while.

Danora smiled. “A Doctor who isn’t a people person? I find that a little hard to believe. Though I guessing you say that to keep the women off so you don’t have to beat them with a stick.” She laughed. “Hard to chase them off if they come back to medical cause they were hit.”

Jack blinked at the woman’s comment, he seemed a bit perplexed by her answer for a moment, just a brief moment before he regained his composure “That has not been an issue so far” He said calmly as he finished his scan, placing the wand in its holster. Then he allowed himself a brief smile, not the same polite one as before but one of amusement “I think you’ll find that many doctors are not for social interactions, especially surgeons, or former Science Chiefs.”

Her hands moved from her lap where she had then resting on her thighs during the scan, to hold loosely to the edge of the biobed. “Pity. It seems with the training on experiences you have had, people would want to speak more to you. I mean, I’m sure you have insights to things that nearly every department could benefit from. Right? From science in how you have seen viruses, sicknesses and various species’ biologies, to security in the vein of various species you have encountered and how different scenarios and missions have affected parts of the ship that medical versus security may deal with in the moment and aftermath.” She tilted her head slightly. “Even engineering in the way you use your instruments and the carious systems on the ship to help with not just diagnostics but treatment, life support, etcetera. Or is because of those reasons that you tend to not be very social? Because you are swamped with folks wanting to discuss this or that with you?”

Jack was a little taken aback by her sudden torrent of speech and a rather odd train of thought. After she finished he didn’t take too long to gather a response “No, I have a low EQ and am thus unable to form connections with people easily” He said simply. He tapped the biobeds computer panel a few times, comparing the scan to her medical file “I learned early on that people don’t enjoy being corrected or outshined by someone far smarter than them, it’s why I joined the fleet, people here are on average smarter than most, I find more stimulating conversations with a Security Crewman than I do someone from back home. People also don’t like overachievers, I was made department head straight out of the Academy like many others, then I became a Medical doctor and became a department head again because I am simply that good” He spoke matter-of-factly but not without ego “Also the last new person I tried to converse with shot one of my staff and I take that sort of personally.”

Danora smiled just as brightly as she had at the beginning. “Well I’m not armed,” she said lifting her arms to show surrender. “And I like talking to smart people. Especially those smarter than me. Hard to learn more without having someone who knows more to talk to. Don’t you think? How do you learn if you aren’t corrected when you are wrong or misinformed?” It seemed completely rational and matter-of-fact to her. “And being an AI specialist, I understand the stigma that comes with being an ‘over achiever’.” She laughed once more.

“Honestly, I think it’s amazing you achieved so much in so quick a time. It shows you are dedicated, smart, and intelligent. The fact you are a Doctor, to boot… well it seems that anyone who doesn’t seek you out to ask for knowledge is limiting themselves. I’ll admit I don’t know much about medicine. I know a couple medical terms from being sick in the past, but that’s about it. But I’ve forgotten more than I remembered.” She then leaned forward slightly and whispered despite no one else being around to hear. “I don’t think it’s an EQ deficiency. I’m willing to bet you just haven’t found someone ‘worth’ making a connection with. Keep at it and don’t give up.” She winked, “Even if it’s a security crewman.” She was teasing but also trying to make him feel better.

The scan would show a healing sprain in her right wrist that wasn’t listed in her file. From the damage healing and the lack of swelling, it was 48 to 72 hours old.

Jack didn’t respond as the scan results grabbed his attention. He looked at her file again even though he didn’t really need to. He wanted to correct her misunderstanding of his situation but that could wait “What happened to your wrist?” He asked point blanc.
