Jack didn’t say anything until he finished his scans “It’s a perfectly adequate ship, I have no complaints” He said as he put the tricorder back in his holster “The crew is not overly accident-prone and the Captain is cautious but not overly so. For personal relations you’d have to ask” He paused for a moment “A people person” He said simply and then blinked for the first time in a noticeable while.

Danora smiled. “A Doctor who isn’t a people person? I find that a little hard to believe. Though I guessing you say that to keep the women off so you don’t have to beat them with a stick.” She laughed. “Hard to chase them off if they come back to medical cause they were hit.”

Jack blinked at the woman’s comment, he seemed a bit perplexed by her answer for a moment, just a brief moment before he regained his composure “That has not been an issue so far” He said calmly as he finished his scan, placing the wand in its holster. Then he allowed himself a brief smile, not the same polite one as before but one of amusement “I think you’ll find that many doctors are not for social interactions, especially surgeons, or former Science Chiefs.”

Her hands moved from her lap where she had then resting on her thighs during the scan, to hold loosely to the edge of the biobed. “Pity. It seems with the training on experiences you have had, people would want to speak more to you. I mean, I’m sure you have insights to things that nearly every department could benefit from. Right? From science in how you have seen viruses, sicknesses and various species’ biologies, to security in the vein of various species you have encountered and how different scenarios and missions have affected parts of the ship that medical versus security may deal with in the moment and aftermath.” She tilted her head slightly. “Even engineering in the way you use your instruments and the carious systems on the ship to help with not just diagnostics but treatment, life support, etcetera. Or is because of those reasons that you tend to not be very social? Because you are swamped with folks wanting to discuss this or that with you?”

Jack was a little taken aback by her sudden torrent of speech and a rather odd train of thought. After she finished he didn’t take too long to gather a response “No, I have a low EQ and am thus unable to form connections with people easily” He said simply. He tapped the biobeds computer panel a few times, comparing the scan to her medical file “I learned early on that people don’t enjoy being corrected or outshined by someone far smarter than them, it’s why I joined the fleet, people here are on average smarter than most, I find more stimulating conversations with a Security Crewman than I do someone from back home. People also don’t like overachievers, I was made department head straight out of the Academy like many others, then I became a Medical doctor and became a department head again because I am simply that good” He spoke matter-of-factly but not without ego “Also the last new person I tried to converse with shot one of my staff and I take that sort of personally.”

Danora smiled just as brightly as she had at the beginning. “Well I’m not armed,” she said lifting her arms to show surrender. “And I like talking to smart people. Especially those smarter than me. Hard to learn more without having someone who knows more to talk to. Don’t you think? How do you learn if you aren’t corrected when you are wrong or misinformed?” It seemed completely rational and matter-of-fact to her. “And being an AI specialist, I understand the stigma that comes with being an ‘over achiever’.” She laughed once more.

“Honestly, I think it’s amazing you achieved so much in so quick a time. It shows you are dedicated, smart, and intelligent. The fact you are a Doctor, to boot… well it seems that anyone who doesn’t seek you out to ask for knowledge is limiting themselves. I’ll admit I don’t know much about medicine. I know a couple medical terms from being sick in the past, but that’s about it. But I’ve forgotten more than I remembered.” She then leaned forward slightly and whispered despite no one else being around to hear. “I don’t think it’s an EQ deficiency. I’m willing to bet you just haven’t found someone ‘worth’ making a connection with. Keep at it and don’t give up.” She winked, “Even if it’s a security crewman.” She was teasing but also trying to make him feel better.

The scan would show a healing sprain in her right wrist that wasn’t listed in her file. From the damage healing and the lack of swelling, it was 48 to 72 hours old.

Jack didn’t respond as the scan results grabbed his attention. He looked at her file again even though he didn’t really need to. He wanted to correct her misunderstanding of his situation but that could wait “What happened to your wrist?” He asked point blanc.

She had started to wonder at the silence when the question of her wrist came up. Her eyes widened a moment and she exhaled. “A farewell party,” she said and her jaw clenched as she moved the wrist closer to her stomach on her lap, the other hand moving over it protectively. He heart was racing as she tried to maintain a nonchalant demeanor. “Nothing really, just a prank that went sideways is all. I… hit a wall… in the dark. It didn’t hurt much so I just iced it.” She was obviously holding more details back. “It’s fine, see.” She held it out and rolled it to show him. She hoped he wouldn’t notice it didn’t quite rotate 100%. It was minor to her and she just figured ice when it bothered her, she would be fine in another day.

Jack examined the injury for a moment and sighed “Things not hurting is no excuse, this ain’t a splinter or a stubbed toe, this is a sprained wrist” He went to a nearby drawer and picked out some supplies “Seeing as you don’t have the required training to properly diagnose this I humbly request that ye don’t do that.” He examined the injury more closely, trying to get a visual cue as to what really happened before handing her a white-glove “Put this over your hand, ice is a decent halfway solution but paired with compression it’s a better solution. If the swelling doesn’t go down I’ll give you some medicine. How bad is the pain?” He asked

Dr. Grey - CMO

Realizing her error, she nodded. “Yes, Sir.” The wrist moved down and to the sides almost 90%, it was the upwards movement that was more strictly hindered at almost 50% range. She slid the white compression glove on and shook her head. “On a one to ten, maybe a four or five. But to be honest, I’m so used to pain I am not sure where that lies on a ‘normal’ scale anymore. When something reaches ten for me, it’s usually when I pass out.” It was obviously difficult for her to admit it, but she did. She was so used to bumps and sprains and things that unless it had to do with her head, or her teeth, her threshold for pain was far above most of her peers. “And I tend not to take pain killers till it’s almost to that point because I don’t like the dulling effect it has on my thought process. Most tend to turn my brain to cotton.” She tried to laugh and cut it short when it came out false.

Jack fought the urge to growl in favour of inclining his head, he understood her feelings for medication. “Well lack of understanding pain is no excuse for idiocy, not having full rotary control of your hand implies significant damage and potential for it to get worse” He had a calmness in his voice “On a side note if you don’t want to tell me what happened then don’t tell me but avoid half-truths or lies. It’s either all or nothing, I don’t have the patience for reading between the lines”

Dr. Grey - CMO

She wasn’t sure if she was going to like or hate this Doc. Her initial reaction was to like him. “I was getting ready to leave and someone thought it would be funny to get one more assignment in for me before I left. I was working on the back side of the Warp Core on the trellis when someone set a vent off nearby. I ducked from the steam release and toppled over. It wasn’t a long fall, being on the half deck, but I landed wrong.” Th admission took a lot from her. It was a rookie prank and one she had panicked and fallen for thinking something was truly wrong.

“I assure you those responsible were dealt with. But for the pain, I honestly and sincerely don’t know how to answer. Between spars, holodeck trainings and work, I truly have built up a tolerance to pain to where I think I don’t always … no, you said honesty, I ‘know’ I don’t always know what the true pain level is or how to react. If it doesn’t tear my eyes or make my vision swim, it’s not serious.” She looked down at the hand in the compression glove and sighed. “I have claustrophobia and sometimes when pushed to far into those situations I lash out in anger. I’ve hit walls instead of co workers and shoved things out of my way that probably weren’t meant to move that way.” She sighed and shook her head. A smile tried to raise the corners of her mouth and failed as she looked back up. “So there it is… the whole truth. Hazing doesn’t always happen to just the new guy and apparently being an engineer who can’t do confined spaces for long periods makes me a target more than I care to admit. But I will promise, from here out, if I am hurt, I will tell you. And I will tell you even if it ‘only hurts a little’. Though I also promise not to come to you with ever plas-cut or tea cup burn.” She hoped it was enough. No one had ever bothered to chastise her for her behavior towards what she considered ‘minor injuries’ so it was a bit hard to swallow now. And her admittance of the phobia made her question herself further. Had she just painted a target on her back on yet ‘another’ ship?

Jack nodded slowly, in the Science department pranks usually amounted to spiking innocent experiments to produce entertaining chemical reactions such as flash explosions or overflowing goo. “So long as you don’t die I don’t really mind” It wasn’t clear if he was kidding or not, 50/50 on that matter. “Well with that out of the way I declare you mostly fit for duty. Rest that wrist for a little while, check in again in a few days when the swellings is completely down, no crawling through tubes until it’s completely healed and no excessive typing” He took a step back but paused before turning away “I am a genius, in the literal sense, my EQ is a diagnosed phenomenon not a matter of perspective…” He hesitated for a breath “But I appreciate your sentiment” He smiled for the first time what seemed to be an actual pleasant, non-forced, albeit slight smile. He went to grab his tools and put them away before stopping once more “Also, try reprogramming the Engineering Staff’s replicator, replace sugar with salt, milk with sour cream and edit the Coffee to be always slightly burned. Make sure to place an exception to the Chief Engineers’ coffee and any possible allergies. It’s a simple, innocent, and effective prank. It’s a proportionate response and easy to implement, It also has the added benefit of proving your mettle in the game.” He added
