Letting out a resigned sigh, she found a clean edge and set down her coffee cup on it. First things first, she just needed space. Lab 2 wasn’t much better, but if she could at least get some room to get things laid out, anything had to be better then where they were today. Pushing up her sleeves, Heather grabbed the first case and started carrying it across the hall. 1 down, only probably another 100 to go.

Cmdr. Grace - XO/CSO

The Sojourner was currently quite empty overall across the ship. In total there was probably only about 9 of the expected 55 or so crew aboard, this including Grace. The ship was still mostly in low power mode but according to logs was fully serviceable and ready to roll. Once Grace had gotten some of the tables clear and packing foam and crates cleaned up the lab took more shape. All of the consoles were on standby of course small blinking lights here and there indicating the power switch or ‘resume’ switch.

It took longer then she had anticipated to get the lab to get the lab to a point where she could start breaking open the crates. Heather mentally kicked herself, she should have known better. The supposedly easy looking tasks always took longer then you ever budgeted for. But with the tables clear, she was able to start clearing away the area around some of the consoles, and get others repositioned. It was not a surprise that most were in a low power mode. The engineering crews would have left them so after they had finished their testing. But it wouldn’t hurt to get some of them back up and running, and she did need a break from moving everything around…

It was as Grace would be pausing for a second in their work when suddenly the localized lighting flicked out casting her into almost total darkness........

Heather silently cursed. The ship had just been cleared to leave dock, there should not be anything wrong with the ship. Not to mention that there was only a skeleton crew on board as most of the crew would be arriving over the next couple of days, and she couldn’t remember for the life of her where she had last seen a flashlight. So here she was standing in almost total darkness, the emergency lights not even kicking on, and she couldn’t remember where she had last put a flashlight.

Giving herself a minute for her eyes to adjust, it definitely looked like it was lighter down the hall. Maybe there were still some lights that way. Carefully feeling her way forward, she slowly moved towards where she thought there might be some light.

When the lights went out, Naomi froze in place. Her eyes blinked and saw nothing. Immediately, her hand dipped down to her waist and her dangling trinkets jingled. Among them was the long handle of a torch. Her thumb pressed the button, the end illuminating the darkness into a familiar sight. A breath of relief pulsed through her lips.

She thanked a fellow officer for suggesting she keep one hooked to her belt.

It swayed from side to side, monitoring her surroundings. With a cautious step, she began to continue down the stretching hallway. It seemed like the outage was centered in the labs and anyone within risked being trapped unless they had a light source.

“H-hello?” Her tongue stumbled over her words, echoing off the walls and down the corridor.

The hairs on her neck rose as fear surged underneath her skin. Naomi paused and took a deep breath, forcing away the sensations.

“This is not a horror film. Stop being a baby.” Naomi chided herself.

So far no one replied to her call, just the muted creak/groaning of the ship settling was heard in the silence beyond the life support system’s running. Then there was another muted distant spark from somewhere down the corridor where the lights were still on in another section.........then they too winked out, looking up and down the corridor line for the deck both fore and aft resulted in the same darkness welcoming here....

Heather threw up her hands as the little light she had been trying to follow winked out. “Hello? Is there anyone else here?” she called out in a vain attempt. What were the chances that anyone else was even on this same deck.

This went on for another 5 minutes in full, before a flicker from all the lighting heralded the lights return! Over a ship wide comm alert, a nervous toned male voice spoke, =/\= Uh sorry errr everyone. NC Binny here, I um....I may have you know accidently nudged a main line power cable wrong, looks like I blew out some lighting near the science labs on D deck....err well then while I was trying to fix that I tripped over another wire here in the maintenance area and well that then blew out the rest of D deck! So uh yeah if any of you others aboard here with me stubbed your toe or something I’m so sorry but everything is fixed now yep! This is uh totally not a sign of us having a space alien coming to find us and kill us and implant eggs in our chest nope nope! =/\= The rambling and nervous NC said.

Finally in the background another voice spoke picked up by the comm unit, =/\= God dangit Binny! Stop your stupid rambling and get that panel back in place! Word came up the new Captain is coming aboard probably soon this evening, you want them to see their new shiny ship in the dark after just being cleared for shipping out!? God! =/\= Said an annoyed woman’s voice.

=/\= S…sorry NLt Hash! =/\= Said Binny then the ship wide call ended.

When the lights finally returned, Heather let out a sigh of relief. She had been trying to make her way to where she thought an emergency compartment was, hoping that there might be an extra flashlight in there. But with the lights back on, she could see that she wasn’t even close to where the compartment should have been. Mental note to put an extra light into her pocket as soon as she got back to the lab.

But first, she walked over to the wall and tapped the comm panel there. [O]Commander Grace to NE Binny. I suggest you make sure that double check the connector on that power line, and properly secure any other wires so they are not easily unplugged. The last thing we would want is someone to ‘accidently’ bump a power cable while we at warp. Would we?[O]

A return reply came from the female voiced NLt Hash, =/\= Hash here, Commander, don’t worry I’ll have Binny and myself check those things right away. Sorry about the trouble, trust me I’ll make sure he is properly reminded of what to do and not to do in the future..=/\= She said.

Shaking her head she finally latched onto one comment that the Lieutenant had made during Binny’s call. The Captain was set to arrive that evening. She’d definitely be expected to be there shortly after he arrived. But there was still probably a bit of time to work on the lab before the Captain arrived.

But first, she needed to find a flashlight to keep on her, just in case someone else ‘tripped over a wire.’

When the lights and announcement came over the intercom, Naomi let out a sigh of relief. She turned off her torch then slipped it back onto her belt. That thing was not leaving her side any time soon.

“That was fun.” The sarcasm dripped from her voice as she started to turn away. Since no one had made a response, she assumed there was no one within the location.

Heather stopped in her search, had she really heard that? She had thought she had heard something right as the lights went out, but she was sure she heard someone talking again. If it was those engineers…

Turning back towards the corridor she stuck her head out and looked up and down the hallway. “Hello? Is anyone else on this deck?”

Cmdr. Grace - CSO/XO

At the sound of the voice, Naomi froze. She shrugged off the source as her imagination, her mind not tired enough to fabricate such things. Pushing past the tightness in her stomach, she whipped about and trailed after the source.

Her determined steps vibrated off the metal within the corridor. Goosebumps began to surface across her flesh as she proceeded. She scanned the interior searching for life-signs. Her heartbeat leaped into her head, deafening her with its rapid pace and rushing blood.

“I swear, if someone is playing a prank, I’m going to be bloody angry. This is not funny!” Naomi’s voice echoed down the narrow space. Her form came into view shortly when she turned back down the corner to the Labs.
