Other than the bridge, Helena knew that sickbay was the next thing Marceau Cpt Renault would want to see. The saying went that doctors made the worst patients. Helena had no idea if he was or not, she had always been the patient. She was eager to get this check over with. If the doctor didn’t clear her, she couldn’t fly. There was no way she was letting anyone else fly this ship out of space dock, unless Renault ordered her to.

Dropping her bags at her quarters on C deck they made their way back up to B deck and walked into the medical bay.

Lt Laursen, pilot

Marceau went with her to her quarters and then followed Laursen up to B deck. The medical bay was state of the art for the time and Marceau, with his medical background, was clearly impressed. “C’est fantastique,” (this is fantastic) he commented breathlessly. “I would have loved to work here.” Of course, he wouldn’t be. Now that he was Captain, it would be his first position fully away from the Sickbay. But he could still appreciate it.

~ Captain Renault

In the back of the Medical bay, behind one of the three examination beds the back of a head could be seen, a tangle of red curls bobbing back and forth and a muttering voice. When the pair entered the Sickbay the head turned around and Rachel Grey the Chief medical officer looked at the two officers, a lopsided grin split her face “Captain Renault” She stood up rather suddenly and seemed to lose her balance for a moment and grabbed a sheet before regaining her balance. “Welcome” She crossed the room in only a few strides, stopping barely a foot from the Captain, hand reaching out for a shake “Doctor Grey at yer service” The woman was tall, very tall. Broad shoulders and a well-built frame hidden under a long white coat, her toothy grin seemed genuine although she didn’t make eye contact, choosing to look a little above as if she was staring at the Captain’s forehead.

Dr. Grey - CMO

Marceau watched the doctor turn, stand, and then lose her balance for a moment. He noted it but thought nothing of it. He shook her hand with a polite, quick shake. “This is Lieutenant Laursen,” He said, gesturing to the officer beside him. “She is our new helmsman and pilot. We decided to get our boarding evals out of the way quickly, there is a lot to be done before we leave tomorrow.” He said, in a French accent milder than was typical for him. He offered Grey a friendly smile and shrugged, “I hope we aren’t interrupting anything. These sorts of things never take long anyway.”

~ Captain Renault

Rachel returned the shake enthusiastically “Nah, just adjusting the bed a wee bit” She said her odd grin widening “Please come this way” She turned to the side indicating the nearby patient beds “Just not that one” she said pointing to the one she’d been working on.

Helena was not familiar with personnel files, and never would be. She was only a pilot. So she had no idea where Dr Grey had served before. When Grey seemed to trip and stumble, Helena wondered if this was her first time in artificial gravity. It took a bit of getting used to. She smiled at the woman and held out her hand. “Lt Laursen, pleasure to meet you Dr Grey. Is that a Scottish accent I detect?”

Lt Laursen, pilot

Rachel nodded, again very enthusiastically “That it is correct Lieutenant, a small farmstead east of Aberdeen” She walked to the other end of the room grabbing a small medical scanner and returning to the two officers “Please have a seat and I can begin”

Dr. Grey - CMO

Marceau followed the doctor and took a seat where she indicated. “My background is in medical. I’m impressed with the equipment you’re going to have.” Then he spotted the large imaging chamber and gasped, “Is that..?” And then he listed off some of the capabilities of it over the older ones, excitedly.

~ Captain Renault

Rachel nodded, a wide grin splitting her face “Aye, They’ve just started assigning these to ships, used to be they only made them big enough to fit in a hospital until some recent advancements. Given a few years they’ll probably get even more advanced. A decade or two and we’ll have sickbays to make even Vulcans envy” She said with a laugh

Marceau nodded enthusiastically. “My previous posting was XO and CMO on a very old ship. The medical facilities were twenty years old at least!”

Rachel laughed at that, practically a chortle “Aye, we’re entering a new era of space travel now, Soon enough we’ll have hospital ships out there”

Helena made her way over to the other patient bed and hopped up. She was in good health and had a mostly clean medical history. As a pilot she was used to medical checks. Every time she was assigned to fly she had to have one. So this was just routine for her. She snickered behind her hand, eyes dancing as Renault started gushing about the equipment.

Lt Laursen, pilot

Rachel moved on from conversing with Captain to the pilot, she grabbed a small hand scanner from her coat pocket and activated it “Anything I should be aware of since yer last medical appointment? She asked a semi-professional tone in her voice mixed with a tinkle of something else, amusement perhaps?

Dr. Grey - CMO

Marceau let her get on with her job, waiting patiently while she spoke to Laursen. He was familiar with Laursen’s medical file, in fact several things on Laursen’s file were signed by Marceau himself.

Helena shook her head. “No Doctor. Last physical was a week ago before we started our renewal survival training on Titan. Wasn’t there long enough to get hurt this time.” The pilot sat up straight taking several deep breaths while the doc ran her scans.

Lt Laursen, pilot

Rachel nodded as she read through the scan “I never did get a chance to do survival training on Titan, always wanted to visit there” She said absently, pocketing the scanner “You haven’t had any negative reactions since your alien viral infection?” She asked in the same almost amused tone, there hadn’t been any mentions in her file but how she answered would be good enough.

Dr Grey - CMO

“Titan is interesting, survival training is brutal.” Helena shrugged and shook her head. “I don’t think so. I still do my exercises every day, and if I’m hurting I wear my compression sleeves. I was told that might happen though because of the amount of damage. My PT and health scans have stayed consistent since I was returned to duty.” Helena really wasn’t sure what to tell Dr Grey. It was an alien virus, there was no telling how it might affect her. She hadn’t experienced anything abnormal though. At least she didn’t think so.

Lt Laursen, pilot

Marceau looked over from his own seat. “You’re still having aches? Why didn’t you tell me?” He asked, sounding almost offended. He was going to ask a flurry of follow up questions, but he held his tongue, letting Grey do her job. He could talk to Helena later, as a friend. “I could’ve helped.” He said again.

~ Captain Renault

Helena glanced over and smiled in understanding. “I know, but at the time, my dear doctor turned captain, you were light years away on the Palisade.”

Marceau made a face, he had not enjoyed the Palisade mission. It was delivering medical supplies to a colony, and he hadn’t gotten along well with some of the Palisade crew. It had been a tediously long mission.

Rachel rolled her eyes dramatically for the pilot, carefully turning so the back of her head faced the Captain “I’m assuming that your previous physician find’t think your aches would be detrimental to your service” Her face blanked for a moment and she took on a distant expression a moment later blinking and shaking her head as if surprised at where she was “I don’t see anything in your file regarding any recurring pains interfering in that sense.”

Dr. Grey CSO

Helena grinned back at the doctor. Renault’s questions and tone didn’t surprise her. She’d been his patient for years. He’d been there when she’d caught the disease, he had as well. They were good friends, his concern didn’t upset her. “Other than the first time it happened, I haven’t needed medical attention. The treatment seems to work so I go on about my duties.” When the doctor went quiet and got a weird look on her face, Helena glanced at Marceau and waved her hand at Grey with a concerned look on her face. Was the doctor alright? Then Grey spoke again. “No…I mean my PT scores have never been what they were before the infection, but I still pass them every year. Are you alright, Doctor Grey?”

Laursen, pilot

Marceau did not miss the way Grey turned so she was facing directly away from him and he took that as a clue she thought he was overstepping in some way. Exactly what he’d been worried about doing. So he sat quietly while Helena spoke with Grey. When Helena looked at him and waved at the doctor, he gave her a questioning look and shrugged like, What’s wrong?

~ Marceau

Rachel cocked her head almost in the manner of a dog or a perched bird “I am fine” She hadn’t reacted to his waving of hands. She blinked a few times considering his question “Ah right spacing out, nothing to worry lad, I don’t have my brother’s memory, recalling everything all the time. I need a moment to gather and re-read information for any specific details” She tapped her left temple “It takes less time to recall the details like that than it does to look it up in my system” She smiled a crooked smile then waved a hand as if waving his concerns away “Well you seem to be in good health, of course, if you suspect any changes you will report here immediately yes?” She didn’t wait for a reply on that “Well then I suppose it’s your turn Captain?”

Dr. Grey - CMO

Marceau nodded. “Oui, if you are finished with Lieutenant Laursen then I am ready.” The CMO struck him as slightly odd, but Starfleet had it’s fair share of ‘slightly odd’ people. In fact, if he was honest, Marceau could probably count himself in that category. He smiled at Helena and nodded, a silent sign that she could either stay with him or carry on with what she needed to get done.

~ Captain Renault

Helena nodded. She’d rather stay and finish touring the ship, but he probably needed to meet the Doc officially as Capt as well as a patient. She hopped off the biobed and looked at Grey, “Of course doctor. I will let you know if anything changes.” Not that the doc seemed to be paying attention to her any longer. Which was okay, Helena knew they all had things to do and very little time to do it. She glanced at the chronometer, not much time indeed. “With your permission, Captain, I will go start checking the shuttle pods.”

Then the bubbly pilot left the medical bay and made her way to the docking bay.

Laursen, pilot

Rachel waved the pilot away an enthusiastic goodbye before turning to the Captain, spinning the handscanner around, and starting a standard scan. “Please have a seat Captain” She indicated with her free hand the same bed the pilot just vacated “This won’t take long”
