It was about half an hour later, when some of the medical staff were awoken for an unexpected patient. It seems a MACO service dog was being brought in for a check up and eval of health and such after someone on Earth had sent the dog here instead of to Mars, while Mars would end up with a crate or two full of two months of toilet paper.

Two engineers accompanied the dog. One had a couple of PaDD’s under an arm and a box that, on some inspection, was marked medical, more specifically, veterinary. This was carried by a tall, gangly looking youthful Ensign whose short cut hair made him look all the more boyish, though the blue-grey wide eyes didn’t help in that department. A larger box that was shifted about by a Petty Officer, a shorter, wide set man whose appearance could well be described as forgettable, apart from the long, slick looking wave of hair that looked like it was trying to escape his head. He bore a larger, makeshift box filled with tins of foodstuffs, harnesses and other canine accoutrements.

Rachel had been attepmting an upside down nap, attaching her legs to the ceiling, hands in pockets and white lab coat hanging down. She awoke when the door slid open and her eyes widened at the sight.

“Sorry to be a bother,” Rick, the Petty Officer, said. “Captain suggested bringing Sergeant Nessa down to get looked at. Has been asleep in a crate. Uh, she was loaded by mistake.”

Rachel quickly undid her leg restraints and fell down, just barely managing a spin and landing with a quiet thump, knees bent. then immediately moved towards the dog with a cocked head. “A wee dug” She said in a quiet voice.

The tall Ensign added, “She is very well trained. Perhaps you can use her here? She has had training as a therapy and morale dog.”

Rick shifted the box in his arms before setting the crate down on a bed. Kneeling down he gave Nessa a good pet. “She’s a good girl,” he added, “Apart from likely being hungry, Captain just wants to make sure she’s hale and whole.” Rick looked wistful at the dog. Barb’s folks had an aging, mostly black cocker spaniel named Elouise who was the most jealous but adorable thing. He missed Earth, and Barb.

Nessa came striding in, her stance was of a well trained, well mannered and cared for dog. Where Rick sat the box down Nessa came over to it on the floor and took a seat on her hindlegs as if this was now her spot to be on station at and on duty. The dog looked about as if waiting for someone to give it further orders or attention. It so far seemed to accept that the crew were now its trainers/care takers and that her duty was to them.

Rachel squatted next to the dog, head still cocked staring at it as if she’d never seen a canine before. She put a hand absentmindedly in her coat pocket and removed a hand scanner that she turned towards the dog and started a scan “Wee Nessa has a rank” She said in an equally absent manner “Sargent, MACO dog I presume?” She asked a little more lucid.
