Marceau thought for a moment. “Let’s start with the second planet, the class M.” It was safer, he figured, considering it at least had a breathable atmosphere. He thought back to the briefing, he recalled Grace saying they’d need to go to the planet surface. “We’ll start with scans from orbit, once we have those we can send a team down to the surface, for samples from the mining sites.” Transporters were not yet rated for anything besides supplies, certainly not crew. Marceau nodded to Helena, “Our pilot can fly the team down on a shuttle.” He looked to Grace, “We will have to decide who to send to the surface.”

~ Captain Renault

“I was hoping Dr. Grey could lead the planet side team here, as we also have to catalog local plant and wildlife for what is a potential hazard to future mining teams. But I’d also like Lt Locke to lead the survey part of the team.”

“Aye, Captain.” There was more than a hint of a smile to her voice. Field Trip! Helena turned the ship in a smooth arc and headed for the second planet in the system. She glanced over at the science station. “Cmdr Grace, do you have a preference for orbital position to begin your scans?”

Lt Laursen, pilot

Isaac started to scan for anything and everything. He didn’t what to be caught off guard. in a few seconds the scans will come back and he will now what’s out there in the dark of space.

Lt. Isaac Black (AC)

Isaac’s scans so far of the system came back showing they were alone. No signs of anything more threatening them some small roaming asteroids were present in the system and none of those would be coming anywhere near the Sojourner any time soon. Planet side scans of the 2nd planet they now were in orbit of showed a bit more detail on the local wild life. Most were smaller sized herbivores, either two or four legged mammals that seemed to enjoy eating the various green leaf or fruit like plants around the planet. For the areas they were planning to tag for future mining most such areas were in mountain regions and higher up in elevation not too much to concern oneself with though for breathing they were not that high. Animals in these areas were slightly larger, more rugged due to the environment they were in, but the only one that showed up as being possibly a threat was a four legged, two tailed canine like animal that roamed in 4-8 group sized packs. They were about 3 or so feet in height from ground to shoulders, and about 5-6 feet in length from nose to the end of either tail. They had rough fur all over their bodies which was a rich brown/grey/tan/sandy color mix closely similar to the local rock and dirt formations they seemed to live near. Beyond this should nothing else really stood out as being a possible threat for now.

Heather looked down at the scan data that was starting to come in as the ship had entered orbit.

“Put us in geosynchronous above this mountain range,” she said highlighting the range she wanted on the scan data and sending the coordinates to the helm. “I want to start the orbital scans there, before we move on to the next range.”

If they could find a couple of good looking sites for the ground teams to investigate, that would be a great start. And allow Earth to establish a presence before doing a much more in depth survey of the entire planet.
