As Pod 2 safely launched from the Sojourner the pod was soon free and clear and on its way down into planet 2’s atmosphere heading for the second survey marker site on the eastern side of the main continent. They would be roughly 2,872 miles away from the other pod’s landing and survey site. There site as they got back into the upper atmosphere soon was in view by a high orbit.

The spot to be marked was at the base of a fairly sizable small mountain side. The area was about a quarter mile from a large river which flowed from the top of a nearby snow mountain range down through a large spanning valley and eventually after many hundred more miles branched off here and there before ending into the southern ocean. The water on scans was chilly up by their landing site, but once you would get into the lower regions down wind was much warmer. Some signs of various river life was in evidence. The landing site itself was in an open clearing about a few hundred yards from where they were to place their survey and claim markers.

Animal life was as expected, most being small mammals for forest terrains. There were a few signs of the large pack hunters they had been warned of but nothing near to their landing at the moment. Besides likely the sound of their presence would scare most things off for a time. The trees for much of the region were similar to many older red woods on Earth. But their only similarity was in their wide huge trunks, the trees it seems grew outwards more and more vs say upwards. In this case the tallest ones seemed to be topping not much more then 160 or so feet. Looking around the average width of the trees was anywhere between 10-15ft for younger ones to almost 80-100 ft thick!

As the pod came to a soft landing in the open clearing all signs of anything dangerous was gone, they had the area to themselves. Atmosphere outside was breathable, with the current temperature around 62F with a light warm breeze coming from the south east, making it closer feeling to 70F when present. Overhead it as fairly clear skies only a few clouds here and there. The gravity as noted was just slightly heavier then on Earth but nothing to be concerned for unless they had to do a lot of heavy lifting or running.

Helena landed the shuttle with a soft bump and then cut the landing thrusters. She glanced at the sensor panel. “Welcome to Wolf 359. The weather is a cool 62° with a light breeze from the south east, warming temperature to a comfortable 70°. Please remember, while you disembark, that the gravity is slightly heavier than Earth. Atmospheric conditions are showing breathable for us. It’s safe to get up and move about the cabin and to open the hatch. Thank you for flying Air Laursen.”

She reached back and quietly squeezed Renault’s shoulder and then went about the task of putting the pod into stand by mode. Then she unhooked her harness, grabbed her bag and followed the rest of the team out and got her first look at this strange new planet.

Marceau gave a slight, audible gasp as the shuttle pod entered the planet’s atmosphere. The turbulence caused by the entry was unavoidable but still frightening to him. His hands were clamped to the seat’s arm rests or whatever else was close that could look like a normal place for him to put his hands… If he didn’t have a white knuckled grip on it.

When Helena announced they had landed, he unclenched his sweaty palms and unlatched his flight harness, stepping quickly out of the pod. Glad to be out of the thing he considered a death trap, he looked around their landing area. “Let’s get to work. Lieutenant Locke, start collecting samples and run environmental scans, scans of the minerals in possible mining locations, and any other relevant tests. Also examine the plant life, wildlife, and weather. Lieutenant Kelleher, help Locke with the samples and work with her to make sure the area is stable and suitable for shelters for future teams coming here. Ensign Sanks, we aren’t aware of anyone around this system, but keep yourself handy. Meanwhile I will be helping with the wildlife and plant life research and checking for anything medically dangerous.” Finally he looked at Helena, “Help wherever you’re needed with collecting samples and assist Engineering.”

With the pod door open they were free to move out into an alien world and get to work, but first it was probably somewhere written that Captain Renault had the duty to plant the claims marker and Earth Starfleet flag of ownership on the new world right?

“Just one thing Captain.” She held out a long narrow bag. “The claims marker.” She fished in her bag and pulled out a camera. “It will be good for ship morale to have a record of our missions. I am sure Cmdr Grace is doing the same at their site. We’ll take a group shot after.” Apparently without Akela around Helena was going to take it upon herself to take too many pictures. With a grin she held up the camera and hit ‘record’. “Alright, ready!”

Lt Laursen, pilot (and rookie scrapbooker)

Marceau took the claims marker bag, picked a good spot and planted the marker. “Helena… I thought we were done with all these pictures when we all graduated academy.” It was a half-hearted complaint though as he ushered the rest of the team into the picture. “Hurry up so we can get to work.”

~ Captain Renault

Ensign Sanks got out of the shuttle with the other security ensign. Together they created a perimeter around the shuttle and accessed the safety of the crew before losing for the picture then going back to securing the perimeter.
