Helena looked at Marceau and sighed, “Okay, okay. I’m going.” She didn’t want to get up. She hurt and her muscles kept twitching painfully. It had been stupid to go through that workout. She was going to hear it in full from Marceau later. She always did.

Marceau helped support her as she got up. She was absolutely going to hear it from him. This was hard to watch and had been unnecessary. He was angry for her own good.

It was sheer determination that got her up and on her feet and moving despite the spasms. It was Helena’s stubbornness that stopped her complaining on the way down one deck to the medical bay.

Laursen

Because of some reason or other Rachel was lying in the medical scanner bed, on the opposite side, head hanging down so she was looking towards the entrance, holding a PaDD and reading something, the Padd seemed to be upside down in relation to where her head and half of her torso were hanging. She lowered, or well raised the PaDD when the door opened and smiled her crooked smile at Laursen “Afternoon Leftenant, what ails thee today?” She asked as she put her free hand in her pocket to rummage for her scanner but didn’t get up.

Dr. Grey - CMO

Marceau stepped in with Laursen, still helping her to keep her from hurting more. “Our lieutenant decided to overwork damaged muscles that needed rest.” He commented, giving Helena a pointed look. “After we were sick on Mars, she has had problems with her muscles, she isn’t supposed to do that. So I advised her to come see you.” Everyone knew Laursen and Marceau were friends and that they had served together previously. “I’m dropping her off, then I have to return to the bridge.”

~ Capt Renault

Helena opened her mouth to answer Grey, but was prevented from doing so as Renault tossed her under the proverbial bus. Oh yeah, he was mad. “I’m having muscle aches, not just sore but painful, and uncontrolled spasms that burn, a lot.” Better to just say so at this point. She made her way over to the neatest bed, and to her frustration had to let the captain help her get up since her arms decided to give into the fatigue and not cooperate.

Laursen, pilot

Rachel swung her torso upwards then spun in the bed and jumped down, taking a moment to stretch her back as she walked towards the pilot “Thank you, Captain.” she gave the pilot an exaggerated roll of her eyes with an amused crooked smile as she helped the other woman get to the bed “I thought hotshot pilots knew the difference between good and bad burns?” She asked as she helped the Captain with the pilot.

Dr. Grey - CMO

Helena grinned that turned into a grimace as she got on the bed. “Only when it comes to engine thrusters.” Yeah she’d over done it. Maybe she was getting old. No…nope she was not old yet.

Marceau couldn’t help but grin. ‘Hotshot pilot’ was definitely an accurate descriptor of Helena. Then he gave Helena another look, amused but still upset with her. “You deserved that one. Next time don’t land yourself here.” Then he turned to Grey. “Keep me updated on how she is. I need to know if I need to temporarily assign another pilot.” And then he left to return to the ship’s bridge.

~ Capt Renault

Rachel gave the Captain a professional nod “Of course, Captain” She said turning to look at the Commanding officer leave her sickbay

It was always funny to her how they slipped from friends to officers. Marceau was her friend, but Renault was her captain. Helena meant it though, her words far from sarcastic. “Yes, Sir.” His final comment stung. Assign another pilot? There were other pilots on board of course, there had to be, but that stung. Surely she would be fine before her shift tomorrow? Helena refrained from saying anything. That would only get her a lecture on that decision was up to Dr Grey and to follow doctor’s orders.

Helena laid back on the bed while Grey got to work. “Reading anything interesting, Doctor?”

Laursen, Pilot

Rachel shook her head as in surprise she’d been spoken to. She grinned at the pilot as she looked at her scanner then the grin faded “that’s not good” She said with a frown at the device…

Helena’s eyes went wide and she pushed herself up onto her elbows, despite protesting muscles and screaming nerves. Her arms shook with the strain, “What? What’s not good?” Then her arms refused to hold her up more and she was back flat on the table. What was bad? What was going on? Was that ‘not good’ the reason she had so much pain today instead of just the fatigue and minor soreness? What did ‘that’s not good’ mean?!?!

She stared at it for a full five seconds then pressed a button and the familiar sound of an activated scanner started, her grin returned “Ahh much better. She had absentmindedly turned of the scanner and had just been holding the device toward Laursen in a futile gesture “Well you seem to be alive still” She said in full seriousness… for Rachel Grey that is.

Dr. Grey - CMO

Helena blinked at her, What the crap? “I would hope so. I would hate to think death had this much pain.” When in doubt fall back on sassiness. The scans showed not just a high-level of inflammation and irritation, but the nerves seemed to be over active. As if the muscles had been pushed past their limit and made to work while already highly inflamed causing even more irritation to the nerves.

Laursen, pilot

Rachel laughed at that or really cackled “Aye that would be annoying if yer dead yer dead” She closed the scanner and walked to a nearby cabinet, opening it and rummaging around “Now I like the gym as much as the next person” That wasn’t entirely true, Rachel spent most of her free time in the gym or training in hand-to-hand with whatever unfortunate MACO or Armory officer she managed to entrap “But when you ignore your body telling you tah stop or slow down this is where you end up” She was grabbing several items until her hands were full. She then walked back and dropped them all on a nearby tray.

She took a few small blue packages and started placing them on the injured muscles, Laursen would feel immediate coolness. THe packs were covered in a soft towel. “We’ll start with a hot/cold treatment with some minor anti-inflammatory medicine” She grabbed a bottle with a straw and placed it where the pilot could reach it then in a small paper glass she put some non-descript pills “Drink all of this but do so slowly. We’ll see how the inflamation goes down before we do stretching. I’m also slightly concerned with the nerve irritations, I’ll be monitoring it closely.” She crossed her arms as she stared at the gathering of junk in front of her “What exercises were you doing?” She asked.

Dr. Grey - CMO

Helena reached for the pills and then sipped generously from the bottle to wash the pills down. The movement caused the cold packs to shift or fall off on a few places. Helena did her best to reposition them after she laid back. What was she doing? “When I woke up hurting so much, I went to the gym to work through the stretches and exercises the PT gave me. That was 3 years ago though.” That was how the day had started anyway.

Laursen, pilot

Rachel raised a curious eyebrow “Go on” She continued going through the collective junk she’d gathered, there would be time for more later.

Dr. Grey- CMO

“Then I worked on some of the weight machines. But I was having trouble with them, finishing the sets at my normal weights and reps.” She didn’t want to get anyone else in trouble. It wasn’t like she had told Baumann she wasn’t supposed to be in the gym. “Cpt Baumann gave me a few pointers and helped me with a different workout. I…may have stayed longer than I should have…”

Laursen, pilot

Rachel laughed at that “May have she says” She cackled some more, using her hand to dry an imagined tear from her eye before turning back to Laursen, she adjusted a single pack unnecessarily “Tell me something Helena” She used to pilots first name both to build rapport and to show that the question wasn’t from Starfleet Doctor to Officer but from doctor to patient “Why did you continue on your exercise way past when your body asked you to stop?” her voice turned soft and she seemed more focused than was normal for the absentminded medical officer.

Dr. Grey - CMO

Helena reached for the straw again and took a drink. “Because I’m an idiot.” She had actually enjoyed the workout with Baumann but she should have stopped long before he came in and offered her advice. That wasn’t really the reason though. “Because if I can’t maintain minimum performance, I get early retirement, or the very least grounded.”

“And yes I know pushing myself when my muscles are already past the point of needing to stop isn’t going to help.” She said it like she was repeating something she’d been told, a lot.

Laursen, pilot

Rachel crossed her arms, a rather impressive scowl on her face, she’d practiced that during her last visit with her great aunt, she was an excellent scowler. The scowl faded for a moment as she momentarily forgot she was in the middle of a conversation. She shook her head and the scowl returned “I see knowledge isn’t something you lack” Rachel leaned down, she often forgot that she was a very tall woman and her athletic frame and broad shoulders helped her form an imposing figure. “perhaps all you needed was experience” She suddenly switched to a far too sweet tone “Do you know what is even more detrimental to a pilots career than a failed performance check?”

Dr. Grey - CMO

Oh the woman had the look down, Helena was duly impressed. Renault would approve. Then Dr. Grey lost the scowl looking confused for a moment before plastering that scowl back on her face. The scowl lost most of its effectiveness. The overly sweet tone, however, was another thing. Helena grinned but her answer was dead serious. “Doctors who are upset when their patients do something stupid.”

Lt Laursen, pilot

Rachel nodded slowly “Close, Doctors who are annoyed when their patients do something stupid, upset is everyday stuff. Annoyed means grounded” She leaned back and her usual carefree expression and everpresent crooked grin returned “Time for some cream” She announced happily as she removed the cold packs from the affected areas. She grabbed one of the random items, a small metal jar, unscrewed the lid and a rather foul scent filled the air, a smell Rachel inhaled happily “When I was a child me mamo used ta give me and Charlie some of the foulest tasting concoctions whenever we were sick, some herbal remedy or other, old Grey recipes and whatnot” She grabbed a sizable goop and spread it across her hands as she spoke “The theory was that only when truly ill would we ask for the nasty tea” She started rubbing the ointment. Immediately Laursen would feel a hot then cold sensation “This follows a similar principle. Whenever you do something stupid you get to smell like Mamó” she said as she continued “Don’t worry, it’ll come off in the shower…” Her smile faded and her expression turned thoughtful “Well it should”

Dr. Grey - CMO

“I will go to great lengths not to annoy you, Dr.” Helena didn’t seem to be bothered by the smell. It was nasty but such things often were. Grey’s mama sounded like Helena’s mom. She decided that saying so might annoy the good doctor and kept her mouth shut. Grey would notice, as she applied the goop, that Helena’s muscles twitched randomly even as the pilot laid still. Though not as often as when she first arrived.

Lt Laursen, pilot

Internally Rachel frowned as she rubbed the ointment, luckily the pilot hadn’t damaged herself too much. She was certain there was more to why she’d pushed herself but Rachel wouldn’t inquire too much, it was a small ship and Rachel eventually learned about everything. She chuckled to herself as she finished with the ointment, walking to clean her hands thoroughly she quietly cackled at something. When she finally returned she had her scanner back in her hand and did a follow-up scan. “If you are still in pain in an hour or two I’ll prescribe some more painkillers” She doubted Laursen would feel pain “Well that is if I did give you painkillers earlier” She stated happily “We’ll find out”

Dr. Grey - CMO

Helena raised a brow from where she was on the bed. Dr. Grey was....different. Normally that didn’t bother Helena, but Dr Grey was a bit…creepy, Helena thought was the word. When Grey came back to do another scan, it showed the same results, but improving. Helena had been hurting but was feeling better. “The pills you gave me seem to be helping.”

Laursen, pilot

Rachel nodded once, a satisfied gesture “Good, good” She said in an almost muttering way. She glanced at the two identical pill boxes where she’d taken the painkillers from “Just if you get a strong craving for dried figs let me know” She pocketed the scanner “Tell me something Laursen, how much at risk of getting kicked out do you believe yerself tah be?” She asked.
