Despite not being very keen on MACOs being aboard a ship–who was keen on it, really–Kenzo saw some logic to having them aboard. It was helpful to ship and crew security and safety, and that’s what brought him to the MACO area today, to speak to Marine Captain Baumann, about possibly working together to achieve similar goals.

To that end, he entered the area, looking around and trying to see if he could spot the other man.

LtJg Kenzo Kurata, Chief Armory Officer

He was hard to miss. Tall, muscular, with bright blonde hair and piercing blue eyes that flicked to the door as soon as it opened. He was dressed in green cargo pants and an olive drab t-shirt; and was carrying a large crate across the large room, and he stacked it on top of another with a small grunt. He turned and said “Lieutenant Junior Grade. Captain Baumann. How may I be of assistance?”

“Just the man I was looking for.” Kenzo said, brushing a loose strand of black hair out of his face. His hair hung loosely down to his shoulders, and was the kind of messy that was obviously a result of genetics and not lack of care. His brown eyes were hardened and yet at the same time, showed an odd softness to them. Compared to Baumann, he was much shorter and scrawnier. He cleared his throat nervously before speaking.

“I know there’s generally animosity between Starfleet and you folks for being on a Starship. However, we both have similar goals. Safety of the ship and crew, security of Humanity’s assets, so on and so forth. I propose we toss out the animosity and work together to meet those goals. Our departments both have skills that can helpfully augment each other and I see no reason to fight over our niche, when we could very well share it.” He paused for a moment, before continuing, “to use an old Earth adage, I scratch your back, you scratch mine. If I’m using that right.”

Baumann’s eyebrows raised and he walked over and picked up a towel and wiped his hands. He then reached over and grabbed another crate, dropped one end, and set it up like a chair. “Please.” and he indicated the crate as he did the same to another and took a seat himself.

“So… just how do you see this ‘cooperative approach’ working?” Baumann asked, his words ckear but his voice heavy with a German accent. “I am supportive, of course. I am just hesitant to agree to anything as, just as you said, many do not like or want me a MACO team onboard.”

Kenzo sat down on the crate, casting a quick glance around the room. “That’s where I’m still trying to fully work out the details. In a perfect world, I’d say we should mix shifts, alternate in who’s working. Of course this isn’t a perfect world.”

After thinking for a moment, Kenzo sighed. “Do you have any ideas, as my only other one is more akin to what our roles already are, with your people taking point during ground and boarder combat.”

Baumann leaned back a bit and said “Well, I think we need to assess the differences in training first. You and your team are trained and well-versed in risk assessments, de-escalation, enforcement of rules and regulations. And you know where the lines are for what is allowed, what isn’t allowed, and most importantly where the gray areas between the two exist. That would be… difficult… for us. Our training is centered on the application of force. And lethal force at that. I am not sure how that training transfers over.”
