True to his word nearly one minute and ten seconds later the scan completed. “..Ah there, now lets see. Hmm..” He said dialing in some results and a compiled image of a common ‘brown rat’ came up. “..Seems like we got the lower rib cage and left back quarter of a common Rattus norvegicus, also known as the brown rat.” He said. “..Cause of death looks like dismemberment and shredding by something with some force to not only bite a chunk out of the small bit of rib cage left here..” he said indicating a small part of the ribs. “..But also then based on the force of muscle tissue remaining and strains on the bone fragments was torn in half. Hmm…teeth marks don’t really exactly match anything out right in our databases for Earth but there’s so little to study its impossible to say for sure. The force needed to rip it in half like this though based on claw marks on the back quarter indicates to me something with maybe three or four claws and a muscle tone to match such shredding and tearing.” he said glancing at Nessa, “..Definitely not something the dog could do that’s for sure, unless she can transform into some dog monster thing?” he said glancing at the two with slight jest in his eyes. “..Either way whatever did this would have to be quite strong given the level of ripping and such.” he declared.

Rick’s stomach gave a little roll as he heard Franks give his report. So something took out a rat and basically tore it up. He swallowed and couldn’t help from making a face that fostered his thoughts rather well and just how ferocious Nessa sounded when she came out of her crate. Was Ensign Gagarin right and she was a werewolf? “That sounds bad,” he said. “I saw something in the ducts. Just a glance. Nessa saw it first. It was rat like, maybe hairless and a bit wrinkled but it had six legs.” He shuddered at the memory. “Then it was gone skittering through the ducts.”

  • Rick, PO Eng

“Do we have anything in the Vulcan database that fits this?” A voice behind the three junior officers asked. Standing behind the trio was the overly tall red-haired Chief Medical officer. The question was followed by a loud crunch as she took a bite out of an apple.

Dr. Grey - CMO

”..I ran a search, still waiting on comparison results..” Franks said, thumbing to where a query was running on one of the screens.

Rick started at the crunch, imagining that was how the crunch of the rat’s bones may have sounded, then chastised himself for his imagination. And here he thought that Ensign Gagarin had an overactive imagination. Or was the Ensign rubbing off on him? That would be an easy thing to get away with but Rick had always been apprehensive on things that might nibble on him in the dark. Sounds in the night had always been an anxiety to him when he was a kid. Camping was a horror for him with all the insect and other sounds outside their tent. Here on a ship it had been so much easier. Only tings and hisses and mechanical things that were familiar to him. He had to grow used to the sounds of Nessa and her nails on the decking. It was funny how quickly his mind zoned that out with hearing it. Still the anxiety of the unknown sounds were there and this .. unknown critter was not helping.

Just as Rick had finish his internal monologuing a beep came up from the nearby screen. Heading over Frank tapped the result, “..Hmm…no matches found, but then again we only got a small portion of their full database they share with Starfleet right now. We could send a long range comm packet back to Earth, but it would still take about 3-4 days to get a reply back, probably longer for Earth to put through a request of information to the Vulcans and for them to approve anything..” He said.

Just then Nessa nearby stood up from her position she had been sitting at by the door. Her nose tilted up and sniffed then her eyes looked near to one of the ceiling vents. She gave a low growl and bark to get everyone’s attention before growling again. At first no one would hear anything, then a slight skitter sound was heard moving away from the vent duct and away from the medical bay. Given the fading pattern of the sound after a second it sounded like it was rising to go further aft down B deck, or perhaps up to A deck.

Rachel turned her attention to the dog and then looked in the direction of the sound “Interesting” She produced a scanner from her pocket and did a wide scan hoping to catch something of the fading creature “Have you tried using any of the internal sensors?” She asked the other two officers.

Dr. Grey - CMO

“Nope. Though I didn’t really quite know what to expect when I was told they had found something in the ducts.”

Eric looked over at Franks, “Were you able to get any genetic material out of the bite that we could use to scan the ship with?”

Lt Eric - Sci

Shaking his head, “..Not enough genetic material that isn’t the rats left, what little I do got is barely enough for a rough search database query, not enough to refine for the internal scanners to filter out everything else on the ship. Our scanners just aren’t up to that fine a resolution. We would need a bigger sample size of the creature in question. Only thing I could suggest is taking some hand scanners and huffing it out on foot, since it seems the doggo there can smell it maybe try that? Seem what happens..” he said.
