Turning to face him, Ghubari brought one leg up, bent it at the knee and rested it on its side on the piano bench. “Never too tired for you, ndugu. What’s on your mind?” It wasn’t like they didn’t have deep conversations most times they talked, but something about him wanting permission to ask her a question had piqued her curiosity.

He looked for all the world like a squirming five year old that desperately needed to go to the bathroom. Finally he blurted it out. “I need to ask permission to take some personal leave and travel across to the Mirror Dimension to retrieve something”. He stood there with a fixed rictus grin on his face as he plunged his chosen sister and Captain into yet another morass of mind bogglingly complicated mess that would be extremely difficult to include in the monthly reports. He shrugged a little “You told me I’m not allowed to lie any more or hide the truth” he said by way of disclaimer.

Her brows rose sharply against her ridged forehead. “I did indeed say that. Um… care to explain what exactly it is you’re going to retrieve from an alternate Universe we generally have no business messing about in?” She wasn’t even going to bring up the fact that they were doing badly enough on that account simply by allowing Michail to stay here.

His eyes gleamed in the subdued lighting. “You remember the Seven Swords that were used to heal the rift here in this universe”, he was trying hard, and failing, to look serious and not excited at the memory of the terrors they had been through during that time.

“Unfortunately,” she said dryly. A part of her didn’t want to know more and though the ignorance would be mentally easier than whatever he might tell her. She gave a little nod and her eyes said, ‘Go on.’

He sighed and it came from him in a rush, part of relief and part of pensive stress “The Rift exists in the Mirrorverse as well, as do the Swords tasked with healing it and the Mirror version of Skotos is calling to me from the ruins of that universe’s Guardian of Forever.” His voice was quiet, factual but filled with a sense of longing, finally he finished speaking almost plaintively “I want to go…”

Her mouth opened slightly as if she was about to say something and her brow furrowed deeper. “I understand this need, but my first response is to say no. It’s dangerous and you are a Starfleet officer, Stark. You can’t just leap off to alternate Universes on a whim.” She was sounding frustrated and she knew it but it couldn’t be helped. “We need you here. Doesn’t that mean something?” She was thinking of Laraan too. Why was it so early into his marriage that he was willing to go running away to other places? She understood him better than almost anyone, because he was a lot like her, so she could these questions knowing the place from which he had given his request.

He nodded soberly. “It does mean something” he said simply “but I also have a deep seated conviction beyond anything I can explain that leads me to believe that by doing it I would be protecting you all as well.” He smiled briefly “Besides, I wasn’t planning to go alone, If I could find a way I’d bring you all with me I would…, saving the universes one at a time”.
He sighed “I was pretty sure you were going to say no, I accepted that even before I asked but I felt I must tell you so that there were no lies or hidden truths between us and also…” he hesitated and then continued “Because I feel that there is a certain inevitability at work here that is going to arrange things in such a way that we will have little choice but to come in line with what is necessary and needed”. He grinned openly then and chuckled “And we both know how much you love surprises that drag you around by the nose, see this as fair warning that somethings coming that neither of us will be able to dodge”.
