Of all the mornings to sleep in…of all the days to forget shoes! Conner Quinn was normally a very punctual young man. Clad in his duty uniform the twenty one year old dodged around people with a quick “excuse me, coming through” Like a black and teal blur.

Looking at the time Conner put on a burst of speed and slid to a halt just as the hour was reached before the way towards the new chapter of his life. He stood gasping for breath with his duffel bag over one shoulder and his shoes in his right hand. His orders to report were tucked safely inside the left boot that he had not time to slide onto his feet.

A slight jolt went through him as realise that standing gawping at entrance to the ship was not reporting for duty on said ship. Hurrying forward he found his way blocked by others also gaining entrance onto the Athena, impatiently he had no choice but to join the small group of NEs who didn’t seem as pressed for time as Conner himself was. He tried to push his way through again excusing himself and bobbing above the heads of the NEs on the balls of his feet to see where they were going. So focused on getting his first glance of the ship properly was he that when the NEs moved down the slight step onto the deck he missed it and his stockingclad feet struggled for grip only to fail epically and drop him into a heap.

He lay on his back still holding his shoes, winded and feeling the blush of embarrassment flood his face. “Nice Job, C.J.” He muttered to himself “Cadet Quinn reporting for duty.” He said it ironically hoping no one would hear him as he set about picking himself up.

Suddenly, a dark hand reached down. “Need a hand?” a deeply accented voice said, with none of the slight amusement the owner felt.

Dressed in an impeccable uniform, the fifth pip on the woman’s collar said that she was someone of at least some note. Pale amber eyes gazed down at him and briefly took in the state of the cadet, including the lack of boots on his feet. Depending on the extensiveness of the cadet’s exophysiology studies, he might recognize the leaf shaped forehead ridge as being indicative of Napean heritage. And that meant that she was possibly an empath as well.
