Of all the mornings to sleep in…of all the days to forget shoes! Conner Quinn was normally a very punctual young man. Clad in his duty uniform the twenty one year old dodged around people with a quick “excuse me, coming through” Like a black and teal blur.

Looking at the time Conner put on a burst of speed and slid to a halt just as the hour was reached before the way towards the new chapter of his life. He stood gasping for breath with his duffel bag over one shoulder and his shoes in his right hand. His orders to report were tucked safely inside the left boot that he had not time to slide onto his feet.

A slight jolt went through him as realise that standing gawping at entrance to the ship was not reporting for duty on said ship. Hurrying forward he found his way blocked by others also gaining entrance onto the Athena, impatiently he had no choice but to join the small group of NEs who didn’t seem as pressed for time as Conner himself was. He tried to push his way through again excusing himself and bobbing above the heads of the NEs on the balls of his feet to see where they were going. So focused on getting his first glance of the ship properly was he that when the NEs moved down the slight step onto the deck he missed it and his stockingclad feet struggled for grip only to fail epically and drop him into a heap.

He lay on his back still holding his shoes, winded and feeling the blush of embarrassment flood his face. “Nice Job, C.J.” He muttered to himself “Cadet Quinn reporting for duty.” He said it ironically hoping no one would hear him as he set about picking himself up.

Suddenly, a dark hand reached down. “Need a hand?” a deeply accented voice said, with none of the slight amusement the owner felt.

Conner took it and pulled himself to his feet. “Yes. Thank you.” Once on his feet he started dusting himself down and looked at his rescuer. “I’m sorry I wasn’t really paying attention…I…I…” his green eyes widened slightly as he took her in.

Dressed in an impeccable uniform, the fifth pip on the woman’s collar said that she was someone of at least some note. Pale amber eyes gazed down at him and briefly took in the state of the cadet, including the lack of boots on his feet. Depending on the extensiveness of the cadet’s exophysiology studies, he might recognize the leaf shaped forehead ridge as being indicative of Napean heritage. And that meant that she was possibly an empath as well.

He recognised her. He had spent time reviewing the crew files during the journey from Earth. His studied in alien physiology and anatomy made this assignment so much more exciting and there she was standing watching him the Commanding Officer of the ship while he stood there…he wiggled his toes in his socks and looked at his feet in embarrassment then up at her. He stood at attention, “Cadet Conner Quinn, highly embarrassed and humbly request permission to put my boots on ma’am.” He said

A smirk tugged slightly at one corner of her mouth. “Probably a good idea. And don’t worry, it happens to the best of us.” Ghubari actually winked, turned and began to move off. Having returned to the ship from a meeting on the base, she had a couple things to attend to. But she stopped and looked back at Connor. “Though, and I’m in no means a person who believes everyrule should be followed to the exact letter, it is conventional to don your footwear before you leave your quarters. Just a thought…”

And she continued on her way.

Conner nodded and flushed a deeper colour. He didn’t bother to tell her that he was running late and had actually left his quarters on the base without them only to run back and pick them up…only to run back again to pick up his bag. No, nervous late new cadets did not bode well on first impressions already skating on thin ice. He waited until she was gone before he sat down and put his boots on.

“Neither does clumsy klutzy cadets either. You muppet.” He tried not to wonder if she was now thinking about the damage he was likely to cause and if the ship was far enough insured to have him while he tried in vain to pull his left boot on. “Come on…” he muttered, something jabbing his toe. He pulled it off turned it upside down and emptied his orders into his hand before trying again.

Some minutes later, properly clad he tried to collect what was left of his dignity and went to find his quarters and do his check ins.

“Cadet Connor Quinn, you definitely know how to make a first impression”, said a voice that fell into step along the way. Dark Caitian eyes looked on with a somewhat sardonic amusement, “Welcome to the Athena, I think you’ll find there is plenty of drama here”.

The poor guy nearly jumped back out of his boots again. He stopped and looked at his new travelling companion as he reached a hand over his heart and took a few steadying breaths. “Where the hell did you…I mean Yes sir. I apologise sir, it won’t happen again” he swallowed the lump forming in his throat. “Drama sir?”

There was a throaty chuckle from the enigmatic Caitian, the jury was out on whether it was welcoming, threatening or just plain amused. “No need to apologise Connor, we all have at one point or another appeared in a less than salutatory light in front of a superior.” He patted the poor man on the shoulder which showed by its awkwardness that such acts were foreign to the CIO. “As to the drama, isn’t it true that you used to be a child actor?”.

Conner raised an eyebrow but said nothing of the pat just smiled slightly. “Believe it or not I was trying to make a good first impression not being late and all…” he smiled again and laughed out loud. “Yes! A million years ago but don’t worry I still do my own stunts as you plainly saw.”
