The shuttle door opened and Julien inhaled as he set foot on the USS Athena. Oh the sweet smell of a standard shuttle ramp, he thought and had to chuckle under his breath as he strode towards the officer on duty.

So young, he thought as he went with the Ensign through the boarding protocol. Had he ever been that young? It seemed like ages ago, but it really wasn’t. He just felt older, especially since he had become a father. 43 was not old though, not by any means and indeed, now that he was on a Starfleet ship again he immediately felt 10 years younger!

“No thanks, I can find my way on my own.” he answered in his deep rumbling voice.
“But.. it’s a really big ship.” the Ensign insisted.
Julien tapped his temple under his short cropped black curls “And I have a really big brain. No worries, I’m good Ensign.” he said and the Ensign came to attention so hard he could almost hear his spine crack.

He would have to be careful with his command voice, Julien thought. It came way too naturally to him. He winked at the Ensign with his right eye that was just a bit of a brighter shade of green than his left eye and left shuttle bay. Big brain indeed he thought with an inward smile.

Walking along the corridors, he studied the details with interest, he had always wanted to see a mythology class ship from the inside. It would be so easy to be one of many here, much easier than on … he didn’t finish the thought. Some things were still hurting. No, he should be happy for her. This was her ship and she had deserved it.

His quarters were on deck 11, just above sickbay 2. A ship with two sickbays, he couldn’t wait to see them, work in one again. Over 1000 crew and civilians… there was enough to do and he was looking forward to use his hands again, to do something again he was actually good at.

A presence appeared next to him seemingly appearing from some other dimension and coalescing into the dark form of a Caitian. Keeping step with the doctor the being spoke in an almost lazy way that belied his ability to be sneaky.

Julien turned to him with a smile on his face, he didn’t seem surprised at all.

“Welcome aboard the Athena, Doctor Smith, I am Stark, Chief Intelligence Officer”.

Julien nodded. “Pleased to make your acquaintance in person. Shall we go somewhere where we can talk?” he asked and his right cybernetic eye zoomed in very quickly on the corridor corner ahead of them, at the exact moment as a crewmen rounded it. It zoomed back again to normal instantly again, the black pupil becoming a normal size again, but for a second there his eye had looked almost completely black.

OOC Indeed :-)

“Your reputation precedes you” Stark said his senses on the alert for nearby potential listeners, “I am honoured to be working with you”. Stark flipped a button on his personal PaDD and after perusing it briefly led them both into an unused room. “We can speak freely here” he said his dark eyes intent and focused.

Julien waited until the door had closed and Stark had secured the room, then he smiled. He was in his fourties and at his temples his short black locks had a few strays of white in them, but when he smiled he instantly looked younger for some reason.

“Thank you, as am I and yes, your reputation percedes you as well Cmdr. Stark. I have… had a Caitian science officer on the Genesis, she used to keep me on my toes, I hope you’ll do the same, we have a tough mission ahead of us.” he said in his deep baritone.

Stark nodded with a grim smile, “Now that we’ve mutually appreciated each others abilities we can get down to business. We do have a tough mission ahead of us and we are both going to have to be very blunt with each other due to the personal nature of what we’re dealing with, or perhaps better to say with the person we will be dealing with that we both have a personal stake in. I confess it makes me nervous when personal feelings are involved. We’ve both been down that road and found things not much to our liking I’m sure you will agree”.

Julien nodded to the silent admission that Stark had read the classified part of his file. He appreciated the CIO’s thoroughness. That bode well for their working together.

Stark’s voice was firm and his eyes steady, they didn’t have long to learn to work together, the stakes were too high and the price of their failure too great.

“I promise to be thick skinned, consummately professional and ready for good kick if I’m not”.

Julien’s easy smile reappeared. “I shall promise the same. There are two things I would like to suggest. First, I would like to hear your personal assessment of the person of interest and what you think his next steps will be. Secondly I think we should be more than theoretically aware of each other’s strengths. I’m open for a sparring round.” he said.

Stark smiled broadly “I welcome the chance to broaden my skill base” he said easily “Sparring would be a definite bonus and an important step for us both”. His eyes darkened as he continued “As to what the next steps are for our foe then I have to say that he disappeared with nary a trace and has remained dark since. I’m ashamed to admit it but he completely eluded my entire network and for that he must considered well connected and extremely dangerous. The only clues we have lie in our Captain’s past and most of them have dulled with time and some very creative rewriting of historical logs”.
