“I lived through the Dominion War like a lot of people did, I don’t assume anything about anyone anymore,” Ghubari said simply, turning the glass in her hand slightly. The desire to down the whole drink rather quickly was strong, and yet to do so meant letting go of control. Under the current circumstances, it wasn’t something she could do. So she would nurse the very welcome drink for the time being. And she had been truthful. She knew better than some that the exterior rarely allowed a proper glimpse at the interior of a person.

Sitting back in her seat, Koraia took a larger drink from her glass and sighed, gazing around the room a bit. “Thank you, for the drink. It’s nice to have someone help me with something I can actually do right now.”

Julien’s easy smile was back. “Drinking? Aye, that we can do. And talking, that as well. If the Q came by now and said he would fulfill all your wishes, what would you wish for… apart from the obvious?” he asked.

Her leg was the obvious thing, but there were so many things that had fallen apart with its removal. Her career was at a standstill, her relationship demolished, her sense of belonging evaporated, so with these things in tattered, what could she wish for that wasn’t so directly linked? She couldn’t go back and have her life back, so what would she want? The answer was both simple and complicated. “I’d wish to meet my father but if this is a Q scenario we’re talking about, then he could arrange it so that it could happen in a way that wouldn’t impact everything else.” She snorted. “So… what I’m saying is that there’s nothing, because that’s not how life works. We don’t get to pick and choose. That being said, if he could get my mother to leave the Earth ever, then that would help.”

Julien nodded. “Family. Family is important. I wish I had one… on my own. But I’m not the sort of person for that it seems.” he said and chuckled, then he emptied his glass and signalled the waiter for another round of more of the same.

She drank heavily from his specially prepared option for her and gazed at him intently.

“I risked my life for my family and it was all in vain.” he added and gave a rumbling laugh. “My, we are great at one thing my friend. LIsting things that suck.” he looked at her and gave a laugh, a dimple appearing on his left cheek.

Managing a lopsided smirk, Koraia shrugged. “I wasn’t always this way. Hell, if you went right now and talked to my crew I just left, they’d tell you their first officer was gregarious at times and not afraid to socialize. And she and her partner were known to be excellent dancers.” Another shrug. “I changed the moment I was pinned by a beam and the metal half cut through my leg above the knee cap. I forced people to take actions they didn’t want to, because it was the only way I’d lived. But that order tainted everything. There’s no going back, but I haven’t figured out the way forward yet.”

He raised his glass to that. “A dancer huh?” he said and shook his head sadly. Unless she regrew a new leg she wouldn’t be dancing again. There was a story there, but he didn’t want to dig. He knew all too well that he hated people asking for ‘his story’ with their eyes full of pity.
“I was a darn good lover. But now the weight of my half android body would crush a human women and hurt her badly during…” he shook his head. “They keep telling me one door closes and another one opens.” he gave a low humourless chuckle.
“Not seen and doors so far, but I did manage to close a few more, like returning to my inital career as a doctor.” he said and drank.
