Liam reached out the hand with the tricorder, his other held the specimen and kept it away from the curious Borkin. The device took in the data. With a flick of his thumb, it was uploaded into the database. His eyes brushed over the collect to note the creature’s anatomy. Oddly he found himself reminded of the differences between Klingons and Humans. There was similarities between the species, but key traits on the outside and inside revealed where they ended.

He looked at it a moment longer before his office doors hissed open once more.

Joseph’s head popped in, his lips curled into a smile and attempted to look friendly. Liam already knew something had went wrong during the repairs on the creature’s tank.

“I got good and bad news. The tank’s heating vent is fixed, but the glass broke. Are you going to be alright heating that little guy up for a bit longer?”

Liam sighed then replied, “I can.”

“You still got your injections to keep your little ‘friend’ happy?”

“I got a refill from Dr. Grey this morning and I’ve already taken a jog around the warp core. The radiation should last me a while.”

Joseph’s face became relieved to heard it.

“That’s good to know. I’ll keep you updated.” With that, the door hissed closed after he popped back out.

“I suppose I’ll be holding the specimen a little longer,” as if overhearing him, the lizard did its unique purr once more.

Liam placed the tricorder into the desk as he sat back down, “How long have you had the Borkin? Data concluded he wasn’t that old, but it’s still processing the exact age.”

“I’ve had him for almost ten years,” Luka said, scratching Mukin under the chin while they spoke. “He’s twelve years old, which is about a third of his expected lifespan,” she added.

Mukin whined slightly, wiggling once more in his master’s arms. “He’s pretty well trained, but he definitely doesn’t like sitting still for as long as I’ve been holding him,” Luka chuckled lightly. “I’ve just got a couple more things to talk about. What’s the general status of the Science department? Anything that you feel the need to bring to the attention of the command staff, I’m here to listen and to address any issues that might need addressing…”

Luka, XO

Liam nodded, then tapped his work PAAD’s surface a few times. Making notes to check with the readings and confirm the information. He did this with everything rather than assume the machine would be accurate or relay on someone’s memory, choosing not to favor either one. It was always best to have comparisons.

He paused to consider something then brushed it away to the back of his mind.

“Aside from habitats needing repairs and some materials we need to restock on, there’s nothing critical that needs to be addressed,” Liam admitted as he adjusted his arm, the lizard letting out a an audible hiss in its reaction.

He wasn’t sure if the XO had been updated on his symbiotic creature, but he wasn’t one to volunteer information without reason.

“Sounds good,” she said with a small smile. “I’m curious though, why are you holding that Lizard? Does it have something to do with the warp core walk you mentioned?” Luka asked, although her pet was ready to go. “I read something about a, thing, in your record. If you don’t want to talk about it that’s fine, I’m just curious,” she smiled slightly, glancing away briefly.

Luka, XO

“I was wondering if the topic might come up or not, but I didn’t want to the first to approach it,” Liam honestly admitted it.

He inhaled then began to explain.

“During one of my missions, I was infected with a creature. We believe it was genetically modified and after being inserted, it’s impossible to remove now.”

Liam tapped something on his desk causing a 3D rendering of a human and a red patch over the section of his shoulders and neck, forming the pattern of a stingray. It was a model of his current situation based on medical’s research and observation.

“It has altered my DNA enough where I’m now able to feed on most radiation, produce heat from my palms and take more damage than before. We’ve not fully tested the changes however. I also can’t go longer than a week without feeding on radiation else the symbiote will take over and I can hurt the crew.”

He let the information hung there for the new XO, wondering if she will ask additional questions or have concerns. Most already did.
