Diplomatic Offices. Hmm. In another life, she might have ended up in that particular position. Luka glanced around the hall. It’s a pretty quiet day in this area of the ship, she noted as she walked towards the office assigned to one Kaylee Baxter. She pressed the chime after only a moment of hesitation.

Luka, XO

When the door swished open, Luka would find herself in a small office. There was one large desk with two chairs facing it in one corner of the space, and on the opposite wall two large armchairs pitched towards each other with a small end table placed In between.

Seated at the desk was a slender woman with blonde hair pulled back in a high and tight ponytail. Her eyes were a crystal blue and her skin a pale and creamy complexion.

As the door opened, Kaylee looked up, catching sight of the visitor. She stood, moving around the desk, a smile on her face and her hand extended.

“Well hello there!” Kaylee said warmly. “Commander Luka I presume. I’m Kaylee Baxter.”

-Kaylee Baxter

Luka glanced at the extended hand, then dipped her head slightly in a small bow. “I’m glad to meet you, Miss Baxter,” she spoke, her hands remaining to her sides. It wasn’t that she couldn’t shake Kaylee’s hand because of cultural differences, it was just that the shape of her hand was not condusive to such physical interaction.

She lifted her hand to her chest and smiled. Her right palm rested on her chest, then extended out in a graceful motion towards Kaylee. “May your hearts beat strongly, and your love grow wide,” she spoke as she performed the action, then pulled her hand back again, folding her hands in front of herself.

As she performed the salute, it became clear. Her hand, unlike that of a human, had three fingers and a thumb. These fingers were significantly longer than those on Kaylee’s hands, slightly thicker, and covered in the same type of white fur that covered the rest of the Alien officer’s body. The pads of her hand had furless pads, which were a dark grey colour.

Luka, XO

Kaylee chuckled, looking slightly embarrassed. “Please forgive me. I don’t even know where my mind is today. I am quite familiar with the Laleri and some of your customs.”

The blonde woman bowed her head and returned the salute, then motioned towards the sitting area. “Please make yourself comfortable. Can I get you anything from the replicator?”

-Kaylee Baxter

“Just a glass of water is fine,” Luka said, doing as Kaylee had said and making herself comfortable on one of the armchairs. She crossed on foot in front of the other like a classy person and waited for the water. When Kaylee had given her the glass of water she smiled and took a long sip of it. “I’ve found that more people on this ship seem to have heard of my people than any ship I’ve been on before,” she chuckled. “I think the only one so far who hasn’t recognized me by my species is the Captain herself!”

Kaylee smiled. “Well I am a diplomat after all, so it is best that I stay as up to date with everything that I can. I regularly review the Starfleet Intelligence reports. Plus if you knew my mother…” She let out a chuckle. “Well let’s just say she would say she knows everybody and everything there is to know about everybody.”

After a few moments, she spoke up again. “How do you find working under Captain Koraia? I’m trying to get some kind of an impression of what being a part of this crew is like and so far it has been relatively positive. I’ve noticed several of your more recent missions are highly classified… is that a trend?”

Luka, XO

Kaylee nodded. “The Captain is one of the best officers I have ever served with. When I was first on board the Athena I was ship’s Counselor and she and I formed a special bond as friends. When it was time for me to be assigned to a ship as a diplomatic officer, it was a great pleasure to be sent back here to my former ship and many of my former crew as well. As for the missions…” She let her voice tail off. “I think classified is something that goes hand in hand with the ship’s charter, wouldn’t you agree?”

-Kaylee Baxter

“Perhaps,” Luka nodded slightly. “I’ve not been on a ship with such a… charter, before. That is all,” she explained. She took a deep breath. “As the Diplomatic Officer, do you have any subordinates?” she asked.

Luka, XO

“At the moment no,” Kaylee said. “It would appear that I am a one woman show.” Her lips curled up into a slight smile.

“However as we are still one of the few ships with the diplomatic officer position, there could be some room for growing the department in the future,” she said. “As for now I answer directly to the Captain and I have been trained in basic operations, piloting as well as my previous training in counseling. During a crisis I can easily take over a few of the bridge officers stations.”

Kaylee paused, taking a moment to study the new XO. “And what of your background?” She asked, opening the door to get to know the other woman a little better.

-Kaylee Baxter

“I’m from Galdor,” Luka said simply, then chuckled. “I started my time in space in vessels made and crewed by my own people. Despite being a part of the Federation and Starfleet, we maintain a space presence of our own for the purpose of protection, exploration and so on. We were in space for several centuries before we encountered the humans, so our fleet didn’t stop when we joined the Federation. I started there, but I’ve got this wanderlust, so one year I had the opportunity to join Starfleet - meet more people from more different worlds, have new experiences, the lot,” she explained.

Luka, XO

“Fascinating,” Kaylee said. “I was born into a Starfleet family, so it had always been my destiny to become an officer.” She smiled. “If you ever have the pleasure to meet my mother, you will surely understand.” She paused, thinking.

“Was there anything else you wished to know about the diplomatic officer position or my role here on the senior staff?”

-Kaylee Baxter

“No, that’s all,” Luka said with a small smile, “Although I’d love to learn more and get to know you as a person. I hope to serve alongside you for many years, Kaylee Baxter.”

Luka, XO

Kaylee smiled. “I would like that very much. The Captain and I have a standing tea date, a pleasure we both discovered that we enjoyed.” She giggled. “I suppose that you and I will have to discover what thing we have in common.”

-Kaylee Bater

“I’m fond of Chess,” Luka commented with a small smile. “And several other things. What’s your opinion on Holo-novels? Ice Skating? Baking? I’m quite fond of more active hobbies. I think one of my favorite things to do is training Mukin - if I were on Galdor, I’d certainly enter him into contests. Speaking of Mukin, I should introduce you to my Borkin. He’s a very well trained boy,” she smiled, thinking of her pet. Borkins were a Laleri’s best friend, like the dogs of humans.

Luka, XO

Kaylee smiled. “I do enjoy a good Holo-novel from time to time.” She was a little unsure about this mention of a pet. She was quite surprised that the Captain would have agreed to having an animal on board that wasn’t kept securely in the science department.

“I would like to meet your pet sometime,” Kaylee said. Even though she disapproved of the idea of a pet, she should at least familiarize herself with it.

-Kaylee Baxter

Luka could sense a hint of discomfort or unhappiness regarding Mukin in Kaylee’s tone. “His name is Mukin. I’ve talked to Ghubari about him, and she’s fine with it. The first flagship captain of Starfleet had a Beagle, and the Chief of Operations of another recent flagship of Starfleet had an orange tabby. Why, the Captain herself had a little tree-cat onboard until recently, apparently. Our new shuttlecraft is being named after him. The presence of pets onboard a vessel like this is reported to drastically improve crew morale”

Luka, XO

Kaylee smiled, although it would be difficult for Luka to tell if it was a genuine smile or a smug one.

“I have no doubt that you cleared the bringing of your pet on board with the Captain,” Kaylee said. “It is a matter of opinion on how animals and even children fare on a Starship. Nico was…” Kaylee’s voice and eyes trailed off for a moment, as she got lost in thought momentarily. She returned her gaze back to Luka. “He was different. I’m sure your Mukin is just as unique. I would be happy to meet him sometime. I trust you have him properly contained. We wouldn’t want any unsuspecting guests to be caught off guard.” Kaylee chuckled, her lips curling upwards once more.
