“Yeah… sure..” She said then realized her words and recovered with a sip of her coffee and a shrug. “I mean, sure.. there are a couple folks who’s injuries had lasting effects. So I am reminded sometimes. Not a big thing. I mean, they are quick thoughts and reminders. But I remember what happened so it’s just ‘worse case scenarios’ that flit thru. Not a big deal.”

Suddenly the stim caf was tasteless. Karina set the cup on the table and stood up. She turned around to face the street and realized there wasn’t anywhere to go. She wasn’t in a park, there was no Klingon to sink her aggression into, there was nothing but helpless holo citizens wandering around in the bright sunlight. She turned back to Janna and just stared at her a moment. “Everyone has the nightmares, though. So it’s not like I need to be removed from duty. And I get plenty of sleep so I am not a danger. I just need to accept Benjamin is fine, I’m fine and those I remember are still here.” She was withdrawing into herself. The shields rising where they had only been hinted at till now.

Janna drained a bunch of her latte and also got up, but it was a relaxed gesture rather than the seemingly frantic one Karina had done. “Why don’t we go for a walk?” she suggested. “Does this program have any interesting pathways or destinations we can wander to? If not, I bet we could come up with an interesting amendment.”

“I… umm… yes. There is a path thru the park, there,” she motioned across the street where the hedges parted for an open double wrought iron gate into a garden and park. She took a couple steps and then waited for Janna to join her before continuing on. Once they passed into the park, Karina shrugged. “I don’t see the big deal. Wouldn’t you be more upset or worried if I ‘wasn’t’ working or ‘wasn’t’ having bad dreams of the nightmares we went thru?” She didn’t honestly see the problem. But wasn’t that how it was? Doctors were the worst patients.

Janna flashed Karina an understanding smile as she walked along the park path. “Avoidance is not true coping, Karina. It is a copping mechanism, but not always a healthy one. I’m not in a position right this moment to so say there is anything wrong, other than I think that we should talk some more. I’m not here to be an obstacle, I’m here to help, even if that’s giving you a sounding board. There’s no judgement here. You can share the thoughts and feelings and I bet, you’ll find that not only is what you’re going through very normal after such an event, you’re also not the only one. But that doesn’t mean we can just brush it under the carpet and pretend everything is fine.” Janna looked ahead at the pretty scenery of the green space and exhaled audibly. “It’s okay to not be one hundred precent okay right now, Karina.”
