Ghubari didn’t have her own mealtime prayer, but she understood the concept and even the compulsion. How often had she invoked the Ancestors to grant her something, even if it was just out of a need for peace of mind? So she simply bowed her head during Luka’s prayer.

When it was clear Luka was ready, Ghubari lifted her glass of wine. “And I want to thank you for going along with my idea and indulging my desire to cook something. I hope you enjoy it, but I promise not to be offended if you don’t. Cheers to us, Luka.”

“I’m sure I’ll love it,” Luka spoke, lifting her glass as well. “Cheers to you as well,” she added, tapping her glass to Ghubari’s before setting it down and digging in to the beef banana curry and rice. Within a few moments of taking the first bite, it was evident that she was enjoying her meal. If the fact that she continued to scoop spoonfuls into her mouth wasn’t evidence enough, the happily wagging tail hopefully would be. “mmmm, this is very good,” she exclaimed after swallowing a mouthful of the meal. “I’ll have to ask for a more detailed recipe so I can have this again without bothering you to make it for me,” she chuckled.

Ghubari smiled deeply. “I’d be happy to share it with you. It’s also in the replicator under Koraia-Curry-Alpha. I just enjoy the process of cooking. I find it relaxing.” She dug into her sauce, stabbing a bit of beef with her form and dragging it through the sauce and then along through the rice to capture some of the fragrant grains. Overall there was definitely heat, but it there were layers of spices balanced by the acidity of the tomatoes and the sweetness of the bananas. Yes, it had taken time to make (even though she sped up the cooking process beyond what was traditional), but it was for her a gesture of camaraderie with her new first officer. They needed opportunities like this to get to know one another and forge the needed connection in their working relationship. Some commanding offices were content to keep things superficial and strictly professional, but it hadn’t been her style or wish ever in her career. It just wasn’t who she was. And she didn’t think it was Luka’s either.

“What about you? Do you cook?” Koraia asked.

Luka nodded slightly. “I do sometimes,” she spoke between bites, enjoying her meal. “Not always, but when I get the chance. I still enjoy replicated food, but I must admit, there is something strange about it, an aftertaste that seems to linger in any replicated food. I do enjoy cooking from scratch, even using actually grown produce for meals instead of replicated. That tends to be difficult on a starship,” she chuckled lightly.

Ghubari grinned and nodded. “Luckily for us, we’ve got a glorified cruise ship for a vessel and not only three arboretums, but also the science labs do botanical work. I bet if you asked, they’d be happy to let you have some space for airponics growing or something.” She sipped her wine. “But I would actually talk to T’Pon, who is our defacto groundskeeper. She’d set you up.”

“Hmm, I’d love to get a crop of Pad’thesh growing,” she grinned. “Given the fact that you are consuming beef, I would wager that you are not a vegetarian, and you might even enjoy the Pad’thesh. It is… like a meat, but it comes from a gourd that the Hatriku domesticated. It’s quite good, and a quality source of meat proteins without the resources or land needed to raise regular meat providers.”

At this point, she took another large bite of the curry, fighting slightly to maintain the decorum this meal required. The smell of the food was very strong, slightly overwhelming her sense of smell and making it a little harder to concentrate on eating in a polite manner. She was drooling a little, and had to regularly wipe her face with her napkin. She looked a bit embarrassed, knowing such behaviour wasn’t a human thing.
