Janna flashed Karina an understanding smile as she walked along the park path. “Avoidance is not true coping, Karina. It is a copping mechanism, but not always a healthy one. I’m not in a position right this moment to so say there is anything wrong, other than I think that we should talk some more. I’m not here to be an obstacle, I’m here to help, even if that’s giving you a sounding board. There’s no judgement here. You can share the thoughts and feelings and I bet, you’ll find that not only is what you’re going through very normal after such an event, you’re also not the only one. But that doesn’t mean we can just brush it under the carpet and pretend everything is fine.” Janna looked ahead at the pretty scenery of the green space and exhaled audibly. “It’s okay to not be one hundred precent okay right now, Karina.”

Karina’s initial reaction was to lash out. Who was this woman to tell ‘her’ how she was supposed to feel? “Doctors as patients…” she half murmured before moving to a nearby bench and sitting down with an almost resignation in her sigh. “We always hear, and say, that Doctors are the worst patients. Something tells me this is a case of protesting ‘too’ much… huh?” She looked at Janna.

“Something like that,” Janna said kindly. “Sometimes the more we insist we’re fine, the more it becomes obvious we’re not. It is a matter of degrees though.”

“I know I can’t sweep it under the rug. But I figured like a patient with amnesia, getting back to work and getting things to ‘normal’ again, was doing just fine.” She shook her head, watching the people pass by, but not really seeing them. “Guess I’m a doctor cause I’m a lousy psychiatrist, huh?” She finally glanced up at Janna and took a deep breath. “So what do I do? I can’t just stop working.”

Kingston shook her head. “I’m not asking you to, and no one else is either. But there will be limits. No overtime for the next couple of weeks at least. We’re at base right now and there’s no crisis, so that’s actually easier to do than it might seem. And I want us to meet three time a week. Even for half an hour. I also want you to keep a dream journal. When you have dreams, good or bad, write them down when you wake up, whatever you can remember. Particularly I want to know if the dreams ever disrupt your sleep. Do you think you can do this? I promise it’s all going to help, but I need more information to know the best way forward.”
