When Ghubari was in her ready room just as her shift had ended, a message pinged on her console from a station in sickbay. It read

“How about requesting some medical assitance with a muscle relaxant for that strung-up neck of yours Captain Ghubi?”

and shortly afterwards another one

“Excuse me, that was auto-correct, it meant to say Captain Koraia”

Her mouth curled upwards. Cheeky bastard, she thought as she read the message. Sitting back in her chair, she pondered how best to go about this. It wasn’t a bad ruse, but at the same people would take notice. Ghubari sighed, her long fingers tapping on her desk for a moment before she tapped her commbadge. =/\=Koraia to Sickbay. If someone is free, I could use a brief house call for a sore neck.=/\= She disliked using her captain’s privilege for something so minor, but the needs of the their “mission” demanded a few sacrifices.

The answer was immediate. =^= Acknowledged. =^= a deep baritone voice said that she knew all too well.

Shaking her head, even though no one was there to see it, she sat forward in her chair and continued reading through the report she was working on.

Not long after the chime rang.

The doctor who came in was behaving quite business-like up to the second the door closed behind him and it was not the Julien she remembered.

The same short, pitch black curls, only there were a few streaks of grey now at his temples. The same deep tan, only now there were slight lines at his eyes and the corners of his mouth. The same tall and strong frame of a warrior, only now he walked smoothly as if he was 100% human and carried himself with the confidence of a person used to command.

Her pale amber eyes regarded him, taking in the details of the man she had known briefly before and reconciling them with the one before her now.

The same mismatched green eyes, only now they looked seasoned, experienced and … resigned. One thing was the same though, the second the door clicked shut, he dropped the impersonal facade and gave her his trademark charming smile, and the dimple in his left cheek made an appearance.

Rising to her feet, the most immediate difference aside from the addition of two pips and the lack of long braids was her bearing and stride as she moved around the desk. It was completely fluid and natural, which was hard to fake, even with the best synthetic limbs. But her composure was also different, and not just more confident, but at ease with herself. There was the familiar mantle of command that he also wore, and eyes too that spoke of the depth of experiences she had been through. But if there was one thing that might be more surprising than her apparent fluid movements, it was the lightness present that seemed to hold back the dark. It was immediately tangible in the way her mouth curled upwards into a smile and lit up those amber eyes. “Julien…” she said with deep fondness as her steps closed the distance between them. Whether expected or not, it felt entirely natural to her to reach out to embrace the man who had been that tiny bit of lightness in a dark time, and she hoped she had done the same for him
