SNIP

Karina hadn’t considered it a date. But a part of her had been a bit jealous of Kaylee joining them. The sensation was off for her so she hasn’t recognized it till Kaylee stammered am apology. Then she shook her head and smiled and patted the woman’s hand.

“No, Kaylee. You’re fine. He had his boarding physical and Doc gave him some boosters. I think that mixed with too much real food all at once is what did it. I promise cook isn’t to blame, this time.” She smiled once more. “I didn’t realize you’d chosen your other self to stay. I’m sorry for not checking in on you sooner.” She laughed but it was awkward sounding. “Some way to treat my first friends in the ship, huh?”

Her eyes kept glancing towards the door. She really wanted to check on Julien. Then Kaylee’s comment hit her. “Date… What? No no… We were…I was just showing him the lounge. That’s all. He just checked in, and I was coming to eat anyway…” She bit her lip as blush rose on her cheeks. It hadn’t been a date… Honest… Right?

“Well isn’t this just one big embarrassment,” Kaylee said, giving the other woman a smile. “I think we both need a drink.” She waved her arm at one of the lounge attendants and ordered two apple martinis. A few moments later there were two glasses in front of them with the green colored drink inside.

“My apologies,” Kaylee said, holding up the glass in a toast. “Hopefully we didn’t scare our newest crew member too badly.”

Karina watched after Julien left and bit her lip as Kaylee had drinks brought to them. “Just one… I really should check on him.” She smiled because she didn’t want to be rude, but she had brought Julien down here, she really shouldn’t just abandon him.

At the toast, she smiled and nodded. “I am sure he’s fine. Been a while since he had anything not from a replicator, that’s all. Probably the spices. It happens to a lot of folks.” She clinked her glass with the woman and took a sip. She wasn’t familiar with the drink and didn’t want to be getting drunk or worse. “Tastes like candy apples…” she laughed. She had expected a lot of things, but not that. The strength was evident, and she was glad she hadn’t upended the drink her first sip.

Karina
Doctor

Kaylee took a sip of her drink. “By all means, if you feel you should go and check on him…” She motioned with a wave of her hand towards the door. “You’re the doctor, if you think he is suffering from an illness maybe he needs to be examined.”

Karina bit her lip. She hated the decision. “I… I probably should check…” she paused as the woman noticed someone else entering.

R’han walked into the lounge, it was odd that someone serious would come to the relaxing area of the ship so often. He entered then paused taking a quick scan of the room, identifying anyone he determined a threat or of interest he kept their relative position in his mind so if they had moved he would know when and why.

R’han

Kaylee, in her glancing towards the doorway saw R’han enter. Having not really seen him in a while, she gave him a wave, inviting him to join her and Karina.

-Kaylee Baxter

R’han paused. He glanced behind him for a moment to be certain that Kaylee wasn’t wandering at another, not that there was much of a chance of someone being behind him without him knowing. He pursed his lips for a moment before coming to their table.

“Ladies.” R’han began, they were in a social situation rank wasn’t necessary or perhaps appropriate. Furthermore his knowledge of Kaylee’s behavior indicated she preferred a less formal approach when possible. The other officer he was not familar enough with to know what her interpersonal interaction preferences. He turned to the doctor. “I am R’han, Chief Tactical Officer.”

R’han

Karina smiled as R’han introduced himself. “Yes, please join us. I’m Karina Niles, one of your new doctors. I arrived just before all the ‘fun’ so I haven’t seen a lot of folks yet.” She moved the plates she and her companion had been eating from and moved them to the two trays she then slid onto the nearby vacant table. “Sorry… messy lunches and all…” She glanced from Kaylee to R’han then back. “If you two will forgive me, I need to check on someone.” She rose up and reached for the trays, poor R’han getting no chance to get a word in edgewise.

“Kaylee… we do need to catch up. I hope we do soon.” Her face was genuine in its affections. The woman had been kind to her and now she was ditching her. “I’m sorry…” she nodded to the Chief, “Forgive me, R’han…” She then scooted off to set the trays at the kitchen opening and then scurry out the door. She felt horrible and made herself a note to make it up to Kaylee soon.

“No forgiveness is necessary Doctor.” R’han said to her retreating back. Looking at Kaylee. “I hope I was not the cause of her sudden desire to leave. Although,” He glanced again in her direction. “She does seem to have a great interest in pursing someone.”

R’han

Kaylee shook her head in earnest. “No, trust me, I think the reason for the sudden departure was me. It seems we have a new addition to the crew, and he appears to have everyone in quite a ” She took a sip of her drink, eyeing R’han curiously. “Tell me, what do you know about this Julien Smith?”

-Kaylee Bater

“I have not met him,” R’han tilted his head. “Although if you buy me a drink, I will tell you some of my theories of Dr. Smith.” He raised his eyebrow in a stereo typical Vulcan manner.

Kaylee smiled. “Deal.” She downed the remainder of her drink and then signaled the bartender for two more. Shortly there were two fresh drinks sitting in front of them.

“There we go,” Kaylee said. “Now, lets hear what you think of this Dr. Smith.”

“Mr. Smith’s record is full with good reports and some impressive incidents. given his age, he should be at least one if not two ranks higher which suggest a, or several incidents, of questionable behavior. His bio indicates that he weighs nearly 300 pounds his body frame does not look like its over 140 kilos that implies significant enhancements, which implies…” he paused. “perhaps we could listen to some of your hypotheses.”

Kaylee chuckled. “I don’t have anything nearly as thoughtful as you have. I just noticed that he’s handsome and seems to have an effect on the ladies. Probably some of the men as well.” She have R’han a wink and took a sip of her drink.

R’han turned up the corner of his lip, his perfectly good analysis thrown out the window because this ‘Smith’ fellow was attractive, “I do see how physical attractiveness could be used to ones advantage.”

“It’s never lacking in excitement and drama here on the Athena, huh?” She said. “One of the many reasons I am so glad to be back.”

-Kaylee Baxter

“Good Ms. Baxter, one would think you would be above the pettiness of interpersonal drama, it is much like political intrigue. Given your position, I would presume you get your fill on a daily basis.”
