Marishka wished she had been able to avoid spending several days, in an obscure area of the Orion Nebula, attending to family business. Her grandmother had insisted that it couldn’t have been handled over comms but Marishka had a feeling Olena had just wanted her granddaughter to humor her with her presence.

Upon concluding her business she booked passage on the fastest shuttle out.

Sitting alone, quietly, an Andorian of some means had tried to get her into his private berth. He had looked only slightly disappointed when she had taken the quarters, but not him. His pretty blue skin had given her an idea though.

Several hours later, when the shuttle docked at Starbase 157, Marishka emerged dressed int he guise of a high born Grecian woman. Well fitting sandals laced to the knee, vivid blue chiton, deftly wrapped, tied, and pinned black cord at the waist holding a small pouch, an intricate pale gold and purple stola across her shoulders.

She had decided to make a few changes. Her glorious copper mane was darkened quite a bit with a few streaks and an errant curl showing int he original color. Her hair had been styled into a crown and pinned with laurel leaves done in a muted gold.

Looking in the mirror, she realized that the dark hair and dark eyes were appealing but not quite otherworldly in the way that humans had once described her. So, she changed that too.

Her sclera were now a vivid violet and her irises silver.

Being Orion and Klingon had many advantages and it would be a shame for her not to use them all.

Stepping off of the shuttle, she encountered the elderly Andorian again. He paused and looked at her for several long seconds.

“Going to take over the station like you took my quarters?” he quipped.

Marishka smiled sweetly and reached up with her right hand to run her long painted nails through the thick hair at the base of his antennae.

“No. And I slept very well thank you. Now go see your grandchildren, I have a job interview.” turning she made certain to go the opposite direction from him as she went in search of the Athena.

When someone like the Captain of the Athena needed a new host, one would expect there to be a long line of contenders. Such a thing didn’t bother Marishka though. She had a feeling the job was her’s fort he asking. That meant that at least one thing in her life was at the moment.

After being tricked into attending her brother’s wedding, she wasn’t in the mood for any games but, that was exactly what she was here for wasn’t it?

She had found the Athena’s berth and hoped the Captain would be easy to find as well.

  • Marishka

A dark shape moved into her vicinity and matched strides. Jet black eyes took in everything around them and in their vicinity. “Welcome to the Athena, Marishka” the Caitian said with a broad grin showing long canine teeth, “My name is Stark Nightstalker, you were expected”.

Without breaking stride Marishka turned her head towards the Cait. Her long spiral earrings swinging freely against her bare neck.

Burning silver eyes met his dark ones and she gave him her own toothy grin.

“You may know my name, and you may be expecting me for some reason, which is why I find it so hard to believe that you greet me with a threat display. Very unwise. Where are we going?” she asked in a low calm voice.

  • Marishka

“No threat display” the caitian replied amiably enough, “We don’t give threat displays, we kill first with no warning but your reaction is duly noted and I will endeavour to respect your wishes in future”. He smiled toothlessly.

“As to where we are going that is up to you, where would you like to go?”

As Marishka walked the vivid blue chiton floated around her body but still managed to accentuate her curves flawlessly. Raising one hand, she adjusted the stola on her shoulders exposing several bangles on her right arm and a magnificent opal choker at her throat.

Stopping she turned never taking her eyes from Stark’s, “Then you are not the typical Caitain. I have known them to be quite different than you’re trying to be right now.”

Marishka thought of the last two Caitians she had actually known. One was single minded, naive, and a bit annoying but they had bonded over a snowball fight of all things. The other was a sly roly poly man whom she trusted to have her back… Sometimes. Where would this Cait fall?

“I have always known feline species to make threat displays. Are you trying to prove me wrong so soon after my acquaintance? And since you’re the one who said I was expected, I thought you would know better than I where I should be. I believe I should be on the Athena starting to run the lounge which, of course, I’m going to have to redecorate and rename.” she explained slipping into character as it were.

  • Marishka

“Then you have not met Caitian’s who follow the old ways,” he said simply, “I know where it is you should be and I had many questions but you have answered most of them already for which I thank you.” He started to lead the way towards the lounge.

“I do have one more burning question if you would indulge me” he said quietly as they walked.

Marishka was keenly aware that it was bad manners to tell another species how she thought they should behave so that matter could be dropped. She wasn’t certain what questions she had answered but, hopefully, she had answered them correctly.

With a slight smile she nodded and stepped closer keeping pace with him. It had been quite some time since she had put herself through the strict meditation regime that kept her unique pheromones in line. It didn’t seem to matter anymore and might even help her on this new assignment. With vigorous Klingon and Orion bio-chemistry complimenting one another, she could be quite a force to be reckoned with.

“Indulging people is something I’m very good at. What do you want?” she asked softly.

  • Marishka

He grinned and it was almost feral and cunning in it’s entirety, he looked over at her with dark eyes burning with curiosity “Rumour has it you like to make your own perfume, add your Orion genetics and I’m absolutely afire with curiosity what uses you put this perfume to and more than a little curious as to what you put in it”. One of his ears came up so he could better hear the answer.

Marishka recognized a cunning grin when she saw one but his question was not what she had expected.

“Out of all the questions to burn in those nice dark eyes you choose that one? Really? That’s something better shown than explained. All my secrets and I know almost nothing about you. No, I don’t think so Commander.”

There was a long teasing note to her voice. She could be friendly while still trying to figure him out. On another level, her mind was racing with things she needed to do, places she needed to be, and people she needed to meet.

“And now I have a burning question for you. Just to get it out of the way… Which part of my lineage do you find most disturbing? It’s a common theme so lets have it out here and now.”

She was still calm and friendly but very curious.

  • Marishka

He paused and turned to look at her his dark eyes unfathomable. “You ask a frank question, you deserve a frank answer. I was once under the thrall of a genetically enhanced Orion who nearly managed to get me to kill T’Pon, my nephew’s wife. That also answers why I picked the question I did. Take my past experiences of Orion pheromones, the deep shame I feel at nearly killing under thrall to them and add to that my position on this ship and I’m fighting primal defence urges. You say you know nothing about me, well now you do and I’ll add one more thing, I put the “P” in paranoia and the last time I felt this paranoid was when one of the crew turned out to be a killer robot…” He stopped in mid sentence smiled ruefully and finished with “I do believe that’s the longest statement I’ve made for at least three years”.

If circumstances were different Marishka knew that there was so much she could tell him but that might never be the case. There were other truthful things she could say. Whether they would put Stark at ease or not was out of her control.

“Yes, I can understand why my mother’s side of my genetics would have you quite paranoid. I doubt you have anything on that level to fear from me, I’m just the bar tender right?” she asked with a smile and decided to explain her love of perfumes.

“I understand that Caits have a very good sense of smell. You might not walk up to someone and remark that they smell as lovely as a particular summer’s day but, if they do, some ancient part of your brain will remember that. I prefer for people to remember me favorably although, I will take infamy in a pinch.” she finished.

Stark was the type of person Marishka could see eventually befriending but that would probably take quite a while.
