It was a few days before the call from Starfleet came in to the Athena to go on another mission, and Luka had realized she hadn’t really met many of the ship’s junior officers. She quietly remembered how the XO of the Killian had made an effort to get to know at least a few of the Junior officers aboard the ship, so she began to get preparations made. She selected about twenty junior officers at random and sent out an invitation, inviting them to lunch in one of the smaller dining halls on the ship.

To each of the JOs that she invited, she sent a short message detailing the event - the dress-code was casual, and they were encouraged to wear whatever was comfortable. No uniforms allowed.

Luj put down the book and massaged his temples, letting out a little sigh. “Damn,” he muttered to the empty room. “Smart man, but a dry read.” The invitation from the XO beeped on his computer and he scanned the text. “Hmm. That sounds like fun.”

On the day of, she waited in the small dining hall, pacing slightly in worry. There was a jukebox playing music in the corner, and just behind a door was the meal for the small lunch, a make-your-own sandwich set-up.

Luka, XO

OOC: the invites list is basically every JO that is played by someone on the ship.

He grabbed his Academy Springball jersey, then decided that may be a little /too/ casual. Instead, he picked a more appropriate shirt and put it on before heading out.

Upon entering the dining room, he looked around, nodding in silent approval. Spotting the XO, he walked over to introduce himself.

“Commander? Ensign Caser. Luj to my friends,” he said with a jovial smile before extending his hand.

Ensign Caser Luj

The XO notably did not extend her hand in return, placing her hand on her chest and bowing slightly to the Ensign. “Thank you for coming,” she spoke, careful not to smile too widely. The teeth did cause fright for some individuals. It was immediately apparent that Luka was not the average executive officer. Luka was an alien known as a Laleri, and looked much like a bipedal wolf, with silver and white fur and bright amber eyes. She wore a forest green t-shirt and grey trousers, and was quite short for her race at just over 6 feet tall. Ensign Caser might not know that, but it was regular for those of her race to be at least seven feet tall.

What was also apparent as she placed her hand on her chest was that Luka did not have a hand that was particularly suitable for handshakes. Three fingers and a thumb as opposed to four, and her fingers were longer and wider than those of a human. They were covered in fur, and tipped with claws.

“I am Commander Luka. When we are on duty, you will call me Commander, but this afternoon you may call me Luka,” she spoke with a small nod.

Karina was pacing her room for the umpteenth time when the message bell alerted her to the XO’s invitation. She had been forbidden from working over her own initial shift times, by the Councillor. She was supposed to stop being a workaholic but had already used up her allotment of holodeck time for the day. Days off were the worst. Too much time to … well to do nothing. “Well, this should prove interesting.” She went to put on a pair of deep blue slacks with a slightly brighter shade of blue tunic top. The brunette then plaited her hair till it fell in a braided tail down her back. Slipping her feet into soft sided black ankle boots, she donned a couple gold bangles for her wrists and a matching necklace before departing her quarters and heading for the location in the missive.

She came in as the two were exchanging pleasantries. As a medical technician, she was aware of the XO’s uniqueness. She was fascinated but had never figured out a legitimate way to seek out one on one time with the woman to get to know her. When the two were done, she smiled, “Ma’am, Ensign Karina Niles. Thank you for the invitation.”

Ens. Karina Niles
Doctor

The XO dipped her head towards Ensign Niles. “Thank you for coming, Karina,” she spoke, amber eyes taking in the appearance of the young doctor. “As I have explained to Luj, I’d like you all to put aside rank and call me Luka during this meal.”

Kin had only just unpacked when the invitation came through. Her race’s propensity for etiquette and ceremony surfaced and she spent a few long moments trying to determine what ‘casual’ dress would entail in this situation. Finally she shook her head and claimed one of the long flowing brown robes that hung loosely over a leather-like tunic and pants. Making sure her multitude of braids were in place, she took a dry towel to her face, making sure the bright iridescent purple segments on her forehead and chin were free of any dry skin; a small problem in the drier than normal air of a star ship. She was, after all, the only one of her race in Star Fleet, so it was necessary that she make a good first impression… thus the extra moment to make sure she was ‘presentable’. Pulling on tall brown boots, she left her room and made her way to the meeting.

As she reached for the chime, propriety dictating one should always knock first, she was almost startled by the door simply opening. The young Kreetassan woman recovered quickly and strode into the room, taking a place a bit behind Ens. Niles.

Va’Ser-la, Security

Luka bowed slightly to Karina. “One moment, please,” she spoke, turning to dip her head towards Ensign Va’Ser-la, her right hand still in place over her chest. She decided to simply allow it to remain there until all the pleasantries of greetings were over, to avoid the confusion of humans trying to go for a handshake. “Thank you for coming to this gathering. You must be Kin Va’ser-la. I know the strangeness of being the only one of one’s race aboard a ship, and I hope that I can be of assistance in your adjustment period.”

Luka, XO

Marishka hadn’t been aboard the Athena very long but it was time to start the duties for which she had been requested. She was not an officer but could go anywhere and speak to anyone. What better way to make friends and find out what people liked. The lounge would be reopening in a few hours and she needed to be able to incorporate as many things as she could to make people want to come back. She also hadn’t been issued a permanent staff. That was alright by her as well. She had been lucky enough to call a few NEs, Stewart and Ray, who seemed to be quite good with decor and etiquette, they trailed behind her with food carts filled with chafing dishes.

Stepping towards the door she smiled slightly when it opened. Walking in with long elegant steps, Marishka moved aside for her staff and bowed to the XO.

Luka couldn’t help but wag her tail at the arrival of the food, and a cheerful smile appeared on her face. She approached Marishka and took a few moments to look her over before bowing her head respectfully. “You must be Marishka?” she guessed.

“I’m hoping somebody ordered lunch.” she said with a pleasant smile, her silver eyes swept the room as she motioned Stuart and Ray to set up.

  • Marishka

“Yes, that was me. I hope everyone is alright with sandwiches,” the XO chuckled, already able to smell the bread, cheese, and meat inside the chafing dishes, along with whatever else had been provided.

Luj turned at the sound of the new voice, nodding politely before looking at the trays of food. “Right here!” he said, holding up his hand.

He coughed a little, slightly embarrassed at his eagerness to eat. “I mean, I…um…ah, the hell with it. I think we’re adult enough to eat and talk, right?”

Ensign Caser Luj

“Of course. Eating a meal is half of the reason for this gathering. You’re free to stay and join us if you want,” she looked at Marishka and her two assistants. “I’m sure you’ve brought enough food for more than the people here, and not all of those who I invited have shown up.” She grabbed a plate and started making her sandwich.

Luka, XO

Marishka nodded at her two assistants. Stewart and Ray were doing an amazing job for knowing each other for such a short time. Since they had real jobs on the ship, Marishka didn’t require any uniforms of them, just a pin with three mat gold laurel leaves to signify that they were working with her. She, herself, had dressed casual for the event, finally back in heels and a suede skirt that was just above the knee, a snug fitting velvet top with bared shoulders all done in a vibrant blue. The opal necklace and crown of newly darkened hair would be ever present for the near future.

“A good provider always brings more than what is necessary because one never knows whom will show up. Thank you for the invitation, I think we will stay a bit.” she said to the XO.

Izzy had received the invitation at the tail end of her shift. It had taken some time to get done with her after shift report, get back to her quarters, shower and change for the lunch so she was later than most to arrive. The Irish woman stepped in to the small dining hall Luka had selected for her luncheon. She was wearing a long wool sweater with intricate knitted patterns of soft, dark forest green over black leggings and soft suede knee high boots. Her red hair which had grown long since she had left the Europa was nearly down to the middle of her back and was a sea of soft waves.

“I am sorry for my tardiness. I was checking internal sensors in jeffries tubes during my shift and I didn’t want to arrive disheveled and smelling like burned electrical wire.” She said as she approached the XO. She smiled easily and seemed quite friendly. Her Irish brogue was noticeable but not overwhelming. Izzy had come a long way since she first took on a security position in Star Fleet. She wasn’t bulky like some Security personnel but rather seemed lithe. She had a dancer’s build. “Isabel Delaney, Security.” She said, introducing herself as she approached the food.

Delaney, Sec

“Hello Miss Delaney. I hope you find something you like. Do try the apples. They’re fresh from… I’m not certain where anymore. I try to bring as much non-replicated food as I can to each event.” she explained.

  • Marishka

“No need to apologize, Isabel. We started eating early,” Luka replied, dipping her head while she held a plate in one hand and a slice of cheese in the other. She acknowledged Marishka’s acceptance of her offer with a small nod as she placed the cheese on her bread bun and reached for some sandwich meat.

Luka, XO
