Kin made her way to sickbay. This was the one check in hat she was the most anxious about. With no other Kreetassan personnel in Star Fleet, she was always apprehensive when it came to the medical exams. She hoped that the Medical section had been updated with her physiology, not that it was extremely different than most humanoid species, but it was different enough.

Walking in, she stepped to the side and waited to be addressed as was protocol. A passing nurse stopped and said “Yes, Ensign? How may we help you?” Kin said “I am arriving on board and regulations require that I have an on boarding physical assessment done. I am here for that assessment.” Her voice was spoken clear with crisp, concise words.

Before the nurse could continue a jet black Caitian arrived from across the sickbay and gave Va’Ser-la a beaming smile. The nurse seemed to know him and gave a secret smile as he moved off back to work.

“I’m not a doctor but I am here to welcome you to the Athena” the caitian said his dark eyes glinting somewhat mischievously “You’re the first of your race I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and I hope you’ll pardon me if I’m just a little curious.”

Stark Nightstalker CIO

Kin stood up straight and said “I am Ensign Kin Va’Ser-la, Security, sir. No pardon needed, sir. I get that a lot.” She looked straight ahead and spoke in a rigid and formal fashion.

Va’Ser-la, Security

“Ah security” Stark said pretending that he didn’t already know that. “No need to be quite as formal with me, my name is Stark, Athena’s CIO. I make it a point of pride that I try to convince all young security officers that they’d have a great deal more fun if they’d only join me in the intelligence field but then I’m assuming you’ve fought too long and too hard to get where you are to be tempted by such an offer, am I right?”

Stark Nightstalker CIO

Surprisingly, a flash of a smile crossed her features and she said “With all due respect, Sir, I do not believe that Medical is the proper forum for such a discussion. Nor do I believe that simply being a Security officer is the sole prerequisite for such a… fascinating position. I welcome the Chief Intelligence Officer to review my record and training and then make such an inquiry.” She stood at parade rest, and her speech was still the same formal and direct fashion of before, but there was a slight hint of both amusement and curiosity in it now. As if she mostly thought the CIO was teasing her, but there was a small part that kind of hoped he wasn’t.

Va’Ser-la, Security

“I must incline to agree with the Ensign, Commander.” The amused voice of the Chief Medical officer chimed in. A tall slender man had seemingly appeared from thin air next to the two. It seemed as if he’d managed to hear at least some of their conversation “I do believe a discussion is in order regarding lurking in my Sickbay, Mr Nightstalker.” He gave the Intelligence Chief a wry smile “Welcome aboard Ensign, I’m Doctor Grey, I’ll be conducting your physical.”

Dr. Grey - CMO

“Sincere apologies Dr Grey” Stark said with the vast insincerity that only the truly naughty can get away with, “I’ll leave you both in peace”. He looked over at Va’Ser-la “For now…” with a slight nod and a grin to both of them he left on silent paws tail swishing happily.

Stark Nightstalker CIO

Still at parade rest, Kin said “Commander.” with a slight nod to Nightstalker. Looking at the doctor, she extended a PaDD and said “Doctor. Ensign Va’Ser-la. Security section. Reporting for my arrival physical, Sir.”

Va’Ser-la, Security

“Indeed you are, Ensign” Ben said with a half smile. He led the Kreetassan to a nearby biobed, indicating that she should sit. A nurse brought him a PaDD and he sat down and started reading “So before we begin, any medical issues I should be aware of?” He asked.

Dr. Gre- CMO

Kin sat as directed and replied “No, sir. No issues, no illnesses. I do not know if it was done prior, Lieutenant, but here is the complete medical file on my species as well as my personal record. I wanted to ensure you had the most current information available, sir.” and she slid the PaDD she had carried over on the biobed closer to him.

Va’Ser-la, Security.

Ben suppressed a smile as he accepted the PaDD “Thank you ensign, but I assure you I am well versed in Kreetassan physiology, at least as of yesterday” He smiled and placed the PaDD in his pocket, who knew perhaps there was information there that he hadn’t received. He raised the Medical wand and started scanning the young woman “Now as I understand it your people place high regard on proper protocol and etiquette If it’s not to forward of me to ask, do Kreetassan doctors follow such strict customs when doing their jobs?” He asked curiously, he’d spent some time familiarising himself and several of his staff with Kreetassan medical files last night in preparation of her arrival and in doing so read some up on their historic records with the Federation and Starfleet.

Dr. Grey CMO

“Of course, Sir.” she replied immediately. “That being said, I have spent several years learning to… relax… that regard. I now understand that not all species are as particular as my people. But the doctors follow a strict set of rules and protocols when dealing with their patients. For instance, a doctor may not touch a married person without the consent of both the patient and their partner. If the patient is unable to give consent, then the partner and another member of the family must do so.”

Va’Ser-la, Security

Ben continued his scans and read the results as he talked “Well that’s an interesting way to conduct medicine. I can foresee that proper protocol may have some negative results. But such is life in this vast galaxy, so many different cultures you’re bound to meet some that don’t fit within yer world view” He mused. A very interesting people indeed.

Dr. Grey - CMO

“It had some… complications… to be sure, sir. But we have also incorporated a position within all emergency medical departments that is called “Facility Family”. In the case of needed emergency attention, this individual is legally recognized as both the married partner and a second family member. They are required to be a physician, so they can attest to the need for medical attention and the use of the title. And this particular protocol is lifted during large-scale medical emergencies. We had an earthquake when I was young, and several buildings collapsed. The need for permission was suspended by Diplomacy Hall for the duration of the emergency.”

Kin, Security

Benjamin clearly approved “It’s good that there are still overrides in place in case of emergency. You probably noted many faux pas’ during your time with the Academy, Humans tend to be touchy, especially those that are in the academy.” He continued to read the results, for some reason the scanner was being quite stubborn. Perhaps it was the non-standard DNA.

Dr. Grey - CMO

Kin nodded once in agreement. “Yes, sir. Humans definitely have less… personal boundaries… than my species. That was a lesson I learned very quickly with regards to the some humans drive for… shall we say ‘less formal’… personal exchanges. But it was also good to learn that respect could be earned from the same agents of that lesson… with an appropriate demonstration of physics .” she said flatly, although there may have been a small attempt at humor.

Va’Ser-la, Security

Ben frowned at the scanner. Placed it down and picked up a replacement “Apologies Ensign, this will take a bit longer, I believe that device was incorrectly calibrated.” He opened the other scanner and resumed his previous movement. “Well, it’s good yer finding your way. Just think about it, ten years from now we could have dozens of your species in Starfleet. Same thing as with the Klingons, Bajorans and even a few Romulans. When people realise that there is far more that unites us as humanoids than divides us.”

Dr. Grey - CMO

Kin chuckled softly once. “It will take much longer for my people to come around to being able to deal with others without the protocols they have, I am afraid. It is so much ingrained in our people… Very, very few of us even have the desire to learn about other cultures and species. Not even my parents.”
