Dan walked into the science lab and quickly located the replicator. Dan requested his usual beverage of 90% water and 10 % cucumber juice. Taking the beverage to his small desk Dan sat down and began to relax. Dan sat and stared at his new pips showing that he was now a Junior Lieutenant. While Dan did appreciate the recognition and promotion he didn’t place much emphasis on such things.

Dan took a sip of his drink before removing his ensign pips and putting them away in a small box. Dan then attached his new pips to his uniform and undid the collar of the dress uniform he wore to the ceremony. Dan then leaned back in his chair and wondered if he should get some food from the replicator as well.

As the Lieutenant was pondering the question, the door slid open. “Oh. I’m sorry, sir. Didn’t mean to disturb you. I’m new here and was just getting the lay of the land.”

Caser strolled over and extended his hand. “Ensign Caser Luj. New science officer. “

Liam failed at socialization. While he knew the value in interacting with a large group, they intimidated and quickly became awkward the longer they carried on. He preferred smaller groups of two to three, rather than a massive collection. Besides his nutrients no longer really came from food anymore. He considered a small job around the warp core, but he surprisingly didn’t feel like doing it alone.

His hand still held the pips as he walked toward the labs. He glanced up just in time to spot someone heading into the labs, hoping it wasn’t someone trying to ‘borrow’ a specimen for a prank. When he stepped in shortly behind the Bajorn, his eyes located their identification then exhaled in relief.

“Not much of a social butterfly either, are you Jones? I can relate to that,” his tone fell into casual around his now Junior Lieutenant.

His attention snapped to the Junior officer he hadn’t seen before, causing him to raise an eyebrow. Liam didn’t recall meeting this particular officer and that rose some tension in his figure.

“And, you are?” His tone was polite but it held a business manner to it.

He hadn’t caught the introduction to Dan earlier.

Luj cleared his throat, subconsciously becoming a little more formal at the man’s demeanor. “Yes, sir. Ensign Caser Luj. New science officer aboard.” He thought about extending his hand to the senior officer, but decided against it based on the tension the man was displaying.

Ensign Caser Luj

Dan noticed the ensign’s change of tone and extended his hand. “Pleased to meet you Sir. Welcome to the Athena. I’m Dan Jones, call me Dan. I’ma casual kind of guy”.

Luj visibly relaxed a little, shaking hands with his new colleague. “Luj. Good to meet you. So, do you have a specialty here?” He figured a little shop talk could do his team some good. He was the rookie around here, so he needed to figure out the best way to contribute.

“I specialize in Chemistry and Physics. Any special area for you”

Liam continued to look at Luj a moment or two longer, then nodded. The silence was broken by Dan’s introduction causing the CSO to decide it was the best time to exit. The third wheel in any conversation was never wanted. He fought the sigh at the back of his lips while he walked to his office and returned with his work PADD. It would give him something to listen to at least.

Before he fully exited, he paused. His head turned to the two gentlemen.

“Officer Jones and Luj, could you feed the specimens? I suspect the Ensign in charge of that task has been slacking so watch your fingers. If there are any issues, let me know,” Liam stated then he left through the doorway, leaving the pair alone.

“Aye Chief” Dan said as he watched the CSO exit the lab. Turning his full attention to the Ensign, Dan noted that he barely seemed nervous at all which was a good sign.

“Come on Luj. Let’s go check on the critters.” Dan then stood up and made his way over to the specimen area.

OOC: Can someone remind me what specimens we have here? I can’t remember.

Lt j.g.Dan Jones (Scientist)

OOC: I don’t think that’s been defined as far as I could find or know of. I would say likely any animal that you can pick up and hold is reasonable for lab animals. I know I made up a lizard that needed intense heat to survive for the meeting between Liam and the XO thread. So I think, if we’re not wild with it, it’s alright to be creative alongside the canon stuff. I hope that helps some.

The first container that Dan pointed to was made of glass and measured .5 meters long, was .25 meters thick, and was .75 meters tall. The bottom of the container held sand, approximately .2 meters depth. Pointing to the container Dan said “Now here we have some Vulcan Sandworms. At last count there were 7 of them. It’s been a while since they were fed, so we may only have six. Unless of course they have been breeding in which case there may be more than 7. Let’s drop some food in there and see how many come out of the sand to eat.”

Going over to a replicator Dan requested 12 ounces of what he referred to as worm chum. Dan then went back to the container and dropped the stinky sloppy mess onto the sand.

OOC: Now these are canon but not much was ever shown regarding their behavior, so feel free to have all kinds of fun describing how they act and feed.
