Unable to connect with the nexus Stark focused on his other senses. He picked up a slight whiff of Janna’s scent from his sleeve from earlier in the evening and on a whim put it near the wolf’s muzzle. It was worth a shot…

The wolf struggled to its feet and then sniffed the sleeve. It shook it’s head, as if to say “No” then limped quietly away from Stark and Orvos before turning around and looking at both of them with yellow eyes.
The wolf’s eyes seem to bore into both Stark and Orvos. Finally, after what seemed like minutes, it turned it’s full attention to Stark and stared, it’s face expressionless. Stark could feel something, almost telepathic coming from the wolf.

Under normal circumstances Stark’s training in mental shielding would have immediately clamped down hard but something in the wolf’s eyes gave him pause and so he tentatively let the “animal” in mentally, and also physically followed its lead.

Orvos looked to Stark, then to the wolf, then back to Stark. “What is going on?” he inquired, clearly aware that Stark was focused along with the wolf.

Stark allowed part of his mind some space to speak as he continued to try and pick up what the wolf was telling him. ‘I do believe our furry friend here is more than he seems, he wants us to follow and he seems to be able to send empathic echoes of some sort. I’m no expert but perhaps my predatory frontal cortex affords us similarities that enable subconscious empathy on some level”. Stark felt a brief stab of pain as he remembered a six legged furry bundle of mischief that had taught him his first lesson in receptive empathic communication.

The wolf stared intently at Stark for more then a minute. Stark had the feeling like it was trying to communicate something, but, to Stark it was as if the communication was coming in like a call during bad reception. To top that off, the language that the wolf was using was unfamiliar, garbled and seemed to be out of order.

After another minute, the wolf suddenly pounced, hard and fast, with a strength and speed that seemed unnatural for the injured wolf. He knocked Stark to the ground, flat on his back. It’s claws digging into Stark’s shoulder blades. It made no further aggressive moves, however, it’s yellow eyes stared deep, unblinking into Stark’s eyes.

Suddenly Stark felt pain, not just from the claws digging into his shoulders, but from somewhere else, someone else. He felt like he had been burned and had a broken rib. But it felt different though, like feeling pain in a limb that had been amputated long ago. As he felt this pain, he felt and heard an incoming thought, not quite his own, or was it? A forced suggestion that just said. “Stop, Don’t” It seemed like the wolf was trying to force Stark to say those words.....
