Third shift was Karina’s second favorite shift. First shift was all the action, and therefor her first choice of course. But on third shift it was just her, the occasional sleeping patient and the computer banks.

She had a list of species that were on the ship that she spent a week a piece studying. Anatomy of different species was becoming a hobby for her without her even realizing it. Discovering how many different ways the galaxy put together the same muscles and organs was fascinating.

But tonight was different. Tonight it was another human she was looking up. She had Julien’s record up and was looking for allergies or other food or drink alerts that may explain his sudden departure from the lounge the night she met him. If he had allergies or sensitivities, she would see to it that she was more careful the next time she invited him to dinner. “So here I am planning to invite him to dinner, already… eh, Kar?” She murmured as she scrolled thru the records.

His record looked very normal, even boring. Nothing out of the standard except of course for his right eye that was artificial, but anyone looking at him could say as much. His record said that it had come from an accident during a mission where the nerves of his eye got so badly fried that it had been impossible to reconnect then to an regrown eye.

At the same time, Julien’s alarm beeped silently. He had been reading up on the Athena’s last mission details and checked quickly what it was. Interesting, somebody in sickbay was looking at his file. He hoped it was not the CMO, but got up quickly, slipping into his black slacks and pulling over an equally black workout shirt and made his way quickly to sickbay, realinsing he had forgotten to put on shoes.

He saw the back of her from afar and smiled, relieved that is was not the CMO after all. On silent feet he padded up behind her and looked over her shoulder, his unruly black curl falling into his forehead again.

“Looking for something specific?” he asked in his deep baritone.

One down fall to being alone in medical at night was accidentally blocking out sound around you when engrossed in something.

Karina was twisting a stray stand of hair between the fingers of her left hand as her right tapped over the keyboard. “Cybernetic eye… Usual childhood ailments… Normal… Normal… Normal…” She shook her head slightly at a loss. “Then why did he leave? Maybe it really wasjust upset stomach from real, rich food…”

As she scrolled thru the relatively boring document, the shadow alerted her a split second before his neck tingling breath spoke in her ear.

While most ladies would scream, and some would feint, Karina had survived aliens, near death and a time split. Her feminine response made her let out a rather girly cry of surprise but her fight-or-flight response made her right arm swing around in a reflexive strike towards him.

Her eyes widened at the last second realizing what she’d done. “Aahhhh!” And tried to pull the punch. If it connected, his right side would receive an elbow to his side just below his hip because of her seated position.

It did connect but strangely his upper right thigh where she hit him was hard as metal and depending on the force of the blow it would hurt her elbow, while he didn’t move one milimeter and even more strangely, didn’t show any expression of even having felt it.

He did react though, stepping back and his expression became remorseful. “Oh, I’m so sorry I’ve startled you.” he said. Darn him, that had been a bad idea, but he had not expected her to react that way. His eyes scanned sickbay for the next hypo, the blow had to have hurt her ellbow.

“Does your elbow hurt?” he asked.

“Ow!” Karina growled thinking she’d swing and shifted enough to hit the chair. The angle was wrong, but she definitely hit something solid, and it wasn’t soft flesh.

Turning sideways in her seat as he stepped back, she cradled her arm. “Ummm… Kinda. Think I smacked the chair back to hard.” She forced a smile but the edge of her lip was between her teeth as she rubbed it feeling extremely foolish. “I’m sorry I swung. I’ve bee… We’ve been thru a lot lately. I guess I’m still jumpy.”

Great, she thought to herself, wonder what the Councilor will make of my swinging at a fellow officer cause I wasn’t paying attention and got startled? Out loud she looked up at him. “Sorry, again. Was there something I could help you with?” She stood up, her good hand moving down to two the screen clear as she rose and then went back to rubbing her elbow. She definitely bruise shortly, she could feel it.
