After finding his new quarters and getting lost three or four times (this ship was much bigger than what he was used to) Conner finally found his way to sickbay. He entered and looked around happily. Now this, this he knew. Sickbay no matter the size, or layout always felt like that one safe place. Like the spot no one else could get you when you played games as a child. Sickbay was like home base.

Except this ship had three of them. Home bases that was. And he had ended up in the smaller one the first time. In all fairness he could have simply stayed there and reported in and got his boarding physical out of the way but the orders he had received was to report to the CMO and that meant the larger sickbay where the CMOs office was located. He spotted the requested office and careful not to interrupt those busy at work made his way across the Bay to it.

Dusting himself down he squared his shoulders, shorted his hair and pressed the chime.

OOC: Going to pick this up as well since I think our other doctors are still on LOA, as in another thread Laraan is waiting unconsious in sickbay for an emergency treatment :-)

A deep baritone behind him said “The CMO is currently not present, are you here for your boarding physical?” As he would turn around he would look at a tall, broad-shouldered man in his fourties with short black curls and oddly mismatched green eyes and an easy smile.

  • Julien Smith, doctor

Conner jumped again, it was becoming a habit on this ship, and turning smiled at the person he saw before him. “ Yes sir. Also to report in sir, Cadet Conner Quinn. I am a medical intern sir.” He looked around. “I’ve never been on a ship so big…” he added.

Julien smiled, it made his left cheek dimple. “Well I can’t help you with the reporting in, but we can get your physical done if you like. Hello Dr. Quinn, I’m Dr Julien Smith, I’m also new to this very large ship. With more than 1000 crew members, there’s enough to do, believe me.” he said and offered his hand.

  • Julien Smith, Doctor

Returning the smile Conner took the hand and shook it firmly. “I’m looking forward to it, excited really. This was a huge honour being posted here, a lot to learn and a huge learning curve I’ll bet but....I’m rambling now aren’t I?” He smiled good naturedly and looked around. “So where to?”

Benjamin was walking past deep in thought whilst reading a new report as he went passed the two doctors. It was the new unfamiliar scents that stopped him and he looked at the pair. Two complete opposites stood before him, a twenty-something fresh-faced Cadet and a fortysomething pediatritian. There was a joke there somewhere but he wasn’t going to touch it. He stopped only for a moment “Ah gentlemen, excuse me. I’m Doctor Benjamin Grey, I’m the Chief Medical Officer” the tall Scotsman smiled politely as he turned to the older man. “Doctor Smith I do apologize for not having met with you earlier” He put out a hand to shake his.

“I’d like to meet with you at your earliest convenience, go over a few details” He spoke quickly as he didn’t have a great deal of time. Now turning to the younger man “And you must be Cadet Quinn, welcome aboard” He offered the cadet his hand “I’d like to meet with you also later on today.” He gave the pair a friendly nod “I apologize for my haste but with the aftermath of our previous mission and a whole bunch of fresh faces my office is a bit overflowed.”

Julien just gave a nod, one stray dark lock falling into his forehead. “Of course Dr Grey, happy to hand over this eval to you.” he said in his deep baritone and promptly turned and walked away.

  • Dr. Smith

As though a shock had gone through him Conner stood straight at attention. “Yes sir. Cadet Quinn is correct sir. I was due to report in with you however…” he trailed off and looked at the office. Did he say it was because you weren’t in your office or what? Was it insubordinate? “…you weren’t there.” He finished lamely and belatedly realised he hadn’t taken the hand. He did so now and shook it with a small smile. “I’m sorry sir, this is my first ship assignment…”

Ben raised a hand and was going to say something as Dr Smith abruptly turned away and walked off “… That wasn’t” He said quietly before turning back to the CAdet with a sheepish smile “Well quite, how about two birds one stone” He indicated to a nearby Bio-Bed “And yes I am aware this being your first assignment. I might no longer have the luxury of knowing each of my patients personally but I do try to learn as much as I can about my staff.” He spoke in a soft Scottish accent tempered by an English education “I glanced over the Ares post-report, impressive stuff.”

Conner smiled slightly awkwardly and followed the man to the Biobed. He pulled himself up onto it and listened to his new department head. A pink blush spread over his features as the Ares was mentioned but his smile widened. “Thank you sir, it was a bit of a roller coaster ride to be honest but I was lucky to have very good instructors and was confident in the surgery itself sir.”

“Indeed,” Benjamin said as he started the medical scan. Another doctor brought him a PaDD with the Cadets’ medical history. “Tell me Quinn, why Starfleet. There’s plenty of opportunities for qualified surgeons back home, especially one with your credentials.” He asked without looking from the Scanner.

If the question took him by surprise he didn’t show it. “I want to see the stars as my father puts it sir. I don’t just want to be a good surgeon I want to be an excellent one and I’m only going to do that by meeting and treating new people, new species. Besides medicine is only one part of me and I thought long and hard about what I wanted to do to share the rest of me.”
Save for the regular bouts of childhood illness and occasional knock or two as a youngster Conner’s medical file was exemplary. The latest addition had been made three months previous when he had suffered a fracture in a Kendo tournament back at Starfleet academy. It had healed with no further treatment required.

Ben placed the scanner back into the tricorder and grabbed the PaDD, giving the medical record a quick glance-over. He then went over the Scan quietly. “Alright, everything seems to be in order here” He smiled politely once more “So you Practice martial arts, Cadet?” He asked grabbing a olling chair nearby and siting down, now being in a similar height as the Young Cadet.

Conner watched the other Doctor while he finished his scan and made a note of the expression he adopted while he worked. Realising that he had been asked a question he cleared his throat slightly to give his brain time to catch him up.

“Yes sir, Kendo sir. At least I did for some time at school then the academy.” He explained. In truth he loved the art and the focus and concentration it gave him, something about the feeling of the shinai in his hands. Sometimes in a surgery before he set to work he would stand a second and imagine the tips of his fingers holding his favourite shinai, the feel of the grip and then he was ready to work, but of course he wouldn’t spout that nonsense to his new commanding officer.

Ben made a mental note as he crossed his legs “Tell me, what is it you hope to learn serving on a Starship before graduating?” It wasn’t clear why he was asking, but perhaps that was the point.

Conner looked thoughtful for a few moments as if he had many ideas of how to answer this but wasn’t sure exactly how to articulate it. “ I don’t know sir.” He eventually said. Rather anticlimactic. “That’s the thing, there’s so much that I don’t know yet and that’s what I’m looking for I guess. A chance to find out new things, highlight the things I don’t know and then learn from them.” He looked at Grey, unsure if this response was what the older doctor wanted but it was as close to the truth as he would say,

After a moment of thoughtful silence Benjamin nodded in acknowledgement “Alright, that’s all from me for now, did you have any questions?I have some time to answer any you might have”
