Kaylee nodded. “I just found it quite unsettling facing another version of myself. It’s certainly an experience that I hope is only a one time occurrence.”

The empath gazed at Kaylee intently. “Indeed, I’m striving to make sure that is so.” Ghubari sipped her tea for a moment. “You never told me what version of you you chose,” she said softly.

Kaylee sighed. She hadn’t told anyone of her decision, with good reason. She had her doubts if anyone would ever truly understand.

“That’s something I’d prefer to keep private,” Kaylee said, looking down ever so briefly. “Such an unusual situation, certainly one I hope to never find myself in again.” She reached over and took the teapot, holding it aloft towards Ghubari.

In all the years she had known Kaylee, she could’t remember a single time where they weren’t open with each other. Though she was rather stunned, Ghubari managed to keep her face quite neural, though her shutting off her emotional expression was a pretty usual tell outside of high pressure situations.

“Can I top you off with some more hot water?” Kaylee asked, the changing of the subject quite apparent. “How is Konral? I haven’t seen him in quite some time.”

Koraia simply held her mug out. “He’s well. We’re enjoying married life, though it’s not really any different than before. Though I think lately we recognize how important that the time we have together is a sanctuary from everything else. We’re both so busy that it’s hard to carve out proper time together, but we try our best. You might just need to simply send him a message and set something up. His team and medical are all going through a difficult time after our last mission.”

“Maybe I will do that,” Kaylee said, her eyes drifting down towards her teacup. Then after a moments pause, she looked back up at Ghubari, smiling, as she took a sip of her tea.

“I’ve noticed we’ve taken on a handful of new crew members recently,” she said. “A particularly handsome looking doctor who seems to be getting a lot of attention and the most interesting lounge host I think I’ve ever seen.”

“Indeed,” Ghubari said. Her smile was genuine but she also wasn’t going to go and give anything away by her expressions or emotions. Kaylee might only be half-El Aurian, but she knew Ghubari well enough to know if she was trying to be evasive. If anything was true here, it was that their new crew was mixed and unique. “The diversity on such a large ship continues to surprise. Then again, I think we have a good reputation as a ship, despite the higher risk our missions seem to attract.”

“Oh absolutely!” Kaylee said, nodding. “When I was back at Starfleet Headquarters doing my training for the Diplomatic Officer position, many people spoke very highly of the Athena, and of her Captain. I think the other officers were quite jealous that I got selected for the post here. Then again, I think my mother may have had just a little bit of say in that decision.” She smiled.

“Speaking of diplomacy,” Kaylee said, taking a sip of her tea. “I was wondering if you have any thoughts about my department, small as it may be.”
