Mirroring the grin, Ghubari leaned forward, her arm resting on the table. “What was it like growing up with siblings? I’m always curious. I know Konral’s experiences with his sisters, but I know the dynamics can vary greatly.”

“I do not know how to compare it to anything else. For me, it was like having two best friends who you did not have to say goodbye to at the end of the day. I am quite small for my race, unusually so, so I was teased somewhat - as children do. Rishu was my ever present bodyguard. Suzki taught me how to garden. We explored the woods nearby our home, and papa helped us to construct a sturdy tree-house. He built and designed structures for a living. That tree-house is still up there, my siblings’ children play in it.”

The captain smiled wistfully. “That sounds wonderful. I can almost envision it actually. What do they think of you being in Starfleet and being first officer now?” Families that were close could be really supportive but they could also make things difficult. It could be extremely hard to be away from those you were so deeply connected to and many Starfleet officers found family in their fellow crewmates to ease that loneliness.

Luka thought for a moment. “I miss them terribly. They are happy for me, as I am happy for their achievements, but the separation is difficult. Whenever we talk, Rishu expresses how much he and everyone feel my absence. I know he is happy that I am here and that I am doing great things, but I think they feel the same way that I do… They miss me. I love being here in Starfleet, but there are days I look back and wish I was not so far away from home.”

She nodded. “I understand that feeling. I’m not so attached to the place but having my mother on Earth for so much of my career and her natural disinclination to leave even that region of Africa meant I really only saw her when I went home for R&R, which was more rare than I wanted. Even getting messages back and forth was complicated and not so straight forward. I was glad to have her here for awhile, even if it was weird and difficult at times.”

Luka nodded slightly. She picked up her berry wine and swirled the last little bit of it in her mouth before swallowing. “I would volunteer to help do the dishes, but they’re holographic,” she joked, smiling. The information about Ghubari’s mother was interesting, making the alien officer tilt her head slightly.
