The following appeared on all terminals several times throughout the day.

‘Attention good crew of the Athena. I will be reopening the lounge at 1900 and hope to see you all there. It has undergone extensive renovations and requires a new name. Therefore I’m holding a contest to choose a new name by the end of the night. Uniforms not required.’

  • Marishka

Stark arrived at 1900 on the dot and took a seat. “I’d like to put in an idea for the name if it’s ok” he said his dark eyes thoughtful.

“My idea is to call it “Mambo”, short for Mambo Sawa Sawa which is Swahili for “Everything is Good and Alright”. Swahili is an East African Language from Earth which might appeal to the Captain. Mambo is a common Swahili greeting but also in Latin American languages it’s a pretty swanky kind of dance and in Creole it means a Voodoo priestess” he paused and smiled at Marishka “which kind of makes me think of you”.

When Stark arrived Marishka seemed to be standing on a cloud near the ceiling. Looking down at Stark she smiled as she finished hanging the last of the peacock curtains. It was a task too delicate to be left to anyone but her. Pausing for a moment she seemed to be thinking before effortlessly stepping off the cloud which was, infoact, a hover device and coming to kneel next to Stark. Looking up at him with her silver eyes she nodded slowly.

“I am aware of the dance, perhaps I should teach a class in it someday. And I don’t think I’ve ever been called a Voodoo Priestess before but thank you very much.”

More crewmen started entering the lounge, their eyes wide. Among them was a tiny, alien-looking woman. She had no body hair, but instead all of her skin, except for her face was covered in filigree, tattoo-like intricate red designs, spirals and elaborate patterns, winding over her fair skin so it looked as if she had red, slightly curly hair. Her eyes were a bit larger than human eyes and light grey with a dark outer rim. She wore a long tight red dress that had patches of transparent fabric in between, showcasing in a modest way, that those red intricate designs really did cover all of her body. Slowly she made her way towards Stark’s table.

Slowly she rose to her feet, her newly made scent filling Stark’s nose. She had taken a few minutes to adjust the air circulation system and soon her scent would fill the room if she chose. Tonight she wore a sweet fiery scent. The out fit she had chosen was a long black velvet dress with the pattern of a gold dragon burned into it. The head rested on her left breast and it coiled all the way down her body with the tail ending in a short train. A large opal made up the eye and the opal choker, that she never took off, was on a pale gold ribbon. Back in heels, she seemed to walk with much more purpose as she went to stand behind the bar across from Stark.

“I have a feeling this evening, and many others, are going to be full of surprises. Do you like surprises Commander?” she asked.

  • Marishka

From behind she ran her hand through the fur at Stark’s neck in quite an intimate way with a gentle smile on her lips that were as red as her skin markings. Her almost-white eyes looked at Marishka.

“Usually he doesn’t but it depends on the surprise. Hello, nice to meet you. I’m Laraan, the head counselor.” she sang and her voice was quite unusual too, as if she spoke with more than one voice, it was multi-layered and very pleasant on the ears, soothing and melodic.

  • Laraan, CNS

Stark smiled, and wrapped his tail around Laraan’s diminutive form as he gave a response of his own to Marishka’s question. “I like to give surprises but not receive them, very one sided and selfish of me really but then I’ve never been one to play fair.”

He turned this head to Laraan, “Any ideas on a name for the bar?” he asked curiously.

Marishka smiled as she studied the woman for a few seconds.

So this was what made Stark purr. she thought.

“I’m so very pleased to meet you Counselor. I apologize for not having done it sooner. Would either one of you like a drink?” Marishka asked moving behind the bar with practiced ease.

The place was beginning to bustle, and Orvos had shown up with the crowds as, taking to a small table in corner. He was El Aurian at heart. And while he was aware he had quite the personality, he also missed the times where he could just listen. The stories of lives unfolding in a wonderful mess before him.

-Lt. Orvos Legen, CE

Marishka had seen Orvos walk in but waited till she was through with other matters before making her way to him. She stepped out from behind the bar in her long, tight, black velvet gown with the sheer pale gold dragon coiled around her body, and made her way slowly towards him. Silently, she set a large try down and gave him a shy smile.

“I wanted to thank you for all your amazing assistance. See what beautiful work we can do together?” she said gesturing to the room at large.

A grin appeared on his face. Yes, she was a hard worker that was true. She kept him and several other engineers busy. She was elaborate and expected the best, that was for sure.

The bar looked amazing, made exactly how she wanted it. The tables were white marble with gold accents arranged irregularly about the room. Some had tall slender taper candles, other’s were plain.

The ceiling appeared to have a large spider web design. This was Marishka’s own handy work. She had installed a very elaborate curtain system that would allow each table to become very intimate at the touch of a button.

She poured wine and set a glass before Orvos.

“A very old bottle I found in my travels. Join me for a drink?” she asked.

  • Marishka

Stark looked over at the two, “Going to make it 5 to 1 any time now” he murmured to himself grinning.

Bump

Orvos had caught Stark’s wandering eye for the briefest of moments, but made no remark. Classic of Stark Nightstalker to be ever so observant. However his attention did not leave Marishka for long at all.

“I’m up for a drink,” he said as he glanced at the bottle. “How old is it?”

Truth be told, he was impressed with how it all turned out. The curtains did concern him a bit, but perhaps she knew what she was doing? He then looked up at her after briefly inspecting the bottle. Her dress was exquisite, and the heels did not go unnoticed by him. But he kept his mouth shut. After all, better to appear a fool than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt. That however could not keep his heart from begin to increase in rhythm ever so slightly.

Orvos held her gaze as he listened to her reply.

Marishka examined the bottle for a few seconds which surreptitiously gave her the chance to study Orvos’ reaction to her.

“I believe it’s about a hundred years. Andorian sky wine, or something translated to that effect. My travels are very broad and random.” she explained.

The light blue liquid flowed into the glasses and gave off a slight shimmer before settling. She set one near Orvos and moved the large tray full of bar snacks to sit between them.

bump

Orvos picked up the glass and raised it for a toast out of respect. “To new beginnings.”

After taking a swig, allowing the alcohol to slide down his throat, he looked up into the unique woman’s eyes. “You’ve traveled a lot. Broad and random. Why is that?” he inquired as he set the glass down before him, a grin playing at his features.

-Lt. Orvos Legen, CE

Marishka had learned long ago that truth and lies were, sometimes, interchangeable. So explaining to Orvos why she had traveled could be both or neither.

“Necessity actually. Growing up in the household that I did, I just wanted out. Why deal with my parent’s chaos when I can go make some of my own?” she said with a sly grin.

  • Marishka

Ah, yes. And there it was. The tip of the iceberg. The beginning of what was visible often had very in depth invisible aspects to it. This much Orvos was certainly aware of as a member of the race of listeners.

Orvos returned the sly smile with one of his own. “So you went to make mischief of your own? What made yours different than your parents?”

Simple questions, that was all really. Orvos was nearly a thousand years old. He could wait for answers, of that he was certain.
