<snip>

Unable to connect with the nexus Stark focused on his other senses. He picked up a slight whiff of Janna’s scent from his sleeve from earlier in the evening and on a whim put it near the wolf’s muzzle. It was worth a shot…

The wolf struggled to its feet and then sniffed the sleeve. It shook it’s head, as if to say “No” then limped quietly away from Stark and Orvos before turning around and looking at both of them with yellow eyes.
The wolf’s eyes seem to bore into both Stark and Orvos. Finally, after what seemed like minutes, it turned it’s full attention to Stark and stared, it’s face expressionless. Stark could feel something, almost telepathic coming from the wolf.

-Side Sim GM

Under normal circumstances Stark’s training in mental shielding would have immediately clamped down hard but something in the wolf’s eyes gave him pause and so he tentatively let the “animal” in mentally, and also physically followed its lead.

Orvos looked to Stark, then to the wolf, then back to Stark. “What is going on?” he inquired, clearly aware that Stark was focused along with the wolf.

-Lt. Orvos Legen, CE

Stark allowed part of his mind some space to speak as he continued to try and pick up what the wolf was telling him. ‘I do believe our furry friend here is more than he seems, he wants us to follow and he seems to be able to send empathic echoes of some sort. I’m no expert but perhaps my predatory frontal cortex affords us similarities that enable subconscious empathy on some level”. Stark felt a brief stab of pain as he remembered a six legged furry bundle of mischief that had taught him his first lesson in receptive empathic communication.

The wolf stared intently at Stark for more then a minute. Stark had the feeling like it was trying to communicate something, but, to Stark it was as if the communication was coming in like a call during bad reception. To top that off, the language that the wolf was using was unfamiliar, garbled and seemed to be out of order.

After another minute, the wolf suddenly pounced, hard and fast, with a strength and speed that seemed unnatural for the injured wolf. He knocked Stark to the ground, flat on his back. It’s claws digging into Stark’s shoulder blades. It made no further aggressive moves, however, it’s yellow eyes stared deep, unblinking into Stark’s eyes.

Orvos, upon seeing the sudden actions of the wolf, put his hand reflexively to his wrist where his shield device typically sat. Unfortunately, he had forgotten he had given it to Janna before she had disappeared. And the Nexus was being difficult with him, so reobtaining them was not happening as much as he would have liked.

Every fibre in Stark’s being wanted to take the wolf in the throat but the thing’s eyes stopped him from actioning his instincts… just.

Suddenly Stark felt pain, not just from the claws digging into his shoulders, but from somewhere else, someone else. He felt like he had been burned and had a broken rib. But it felt different though, like feeling pain in a limb that had been amputated long ago. As he felt this pain, he felt and heard an incoming thought, not quite his own, or was it? A forced suggestion that just said. “Stop, Don’t” It seemed like the wolf was trying to force Stark to say those words.....

-Side Sim GM

Curiosity always won out in Stark’s mind and so he complied by speaking the words, “Stop, Don’t”.

Orvos expected Stark to roll the wolf onto its back. He had never known the caitian to give in during a fight. And for him to plead with the hound? Was he fearful of the creature? He doubted it given they had been ready for battle with this very wolf and its panther friend.

Orvos’s eyes focused in on the wolf. “The bloody hell is going on?” he ordered. Perhaps the wolf would understand, maybe even convey something.

-Lt. Orvos Legen, CE

“Someone’s playing a game with us” Stark said through clenched teeth “Every time we fight it they push us harder, I’m playing along with what this “wolf” wants me to do until such time as I can find the real culprit and use my claws to calve my extended name right across both their buttocks”. Stark’s eye’s never left the wolf and the impulse to fight was becoming very hard to resist.

The wolf looked at Stark fiercely, then seemed to retract it’s claws and lick him on the face playfully and rubbed it’s nozzle against Starks face.
The wolf then limped off Stark and slowly made his way towards a nearby door. As he walked, Stark felt that pain again, this time more intense while still feeling distant at the same time. When Stark would blink, he would see, briefly, a different perspective, lower to the ground with some colors missing.

Orvos quickly moved to Stark, keeping a wary eye on the seemingly now playful pup. “What happened?” he inquired with the intensity of a captain.

-Lt. Orvos Legen, CE

“I’m connected to the wolf, sensations, pains, awareness” Stark followed the wolf’s movement mentally telling it to find Janna, “I’ve no idea how or why but I’m just rolling with it because this place seems to have rules of it’s own and I’m just starting to learn to play the game”.

Stark got a telepathic message from the wolf, who identified itself as ‘Claws’. Claws told him that it didn’t want to find Janna, but wanted to find it’s partners, the panther and his human companion. It seemed to think the bast place to look for them was through a door in the back of the bridge.

-Side sim GM

Stark’s eyebrows shot up at the name, but remembering another literal being he’d had the pleasure of knowing, it made sense. He turned to Orvos, “Our friend “Claws” here wants us to find the human and the panther he was with, seems the door at the back of the bridge is our best shot”.

The wolf limped slowly to the back of the bridge and waited by the door. It seemed to be waiting.

-Side sim GM

Orvos was certainly torn. He needed to find Janna. She was most likely the most vulnerable out of anyone present in the Nexus. Then again, perhaps the Nexus would keep her safe. Her properties of her body could be changed here, given how time had no meaning. Nevertheless, she was his priority.

However, now that Kivon had wraggled other people and creatures into the mix, it was still his duty to get them back to whence they came. Orvos sighed. “Very well, but if we do this, we NEED your help to find Janna. Then you may leave. Am I clear?” he said as he moved to the door indicated by the hound.

-Lt. Orvos Legen, CE

Claws didn’t replied but limped towards the door. As he got close, he collapsed on the floor. Stark felt a sharp pain in his side, same ghost pain as before. The wolf was more injured then he had originally lead on.

-Side sim GM

Stark crouched down by the wolf and ran expert paws lightly over the side of the wold in the area where he himself had felt pain. Those who knew where to strike to cause death by necessity were also able to find wounds on their target, or in this case ally. Stark looked up at Orvos, “Claws is hurt, do we have a first aid kit anywhere handy? I’d rather not have to leave him behind and go through the door without him”.
