Luka stopped, seeming to only have now realized she had been pacing. “Oh, I apologize. I am a naturally restless being. I dislike sitting still for long periods of time, and when I do, I tend to have some pent up energy afterwards that I have to expend. Having a pet that needs regular exercise helps me expend that energy,” she explained.

“I can understand that,” Koraia said with a smile. “It took me several years to allow myself to learn to switch myself off, as it were. Then again, I think the War helped a great deal. Being constantly vigilant for months on end tended to leave you exhausted once you finally could just exist for a small time. And then do that for over two years and afterwards I told myself I needed to use my outlets as much as possible and learn to make some of them inactive ones.” That and she had her meditation, which had changed her life as a young adult.

“We can call it a night, if you like. Or we can wander outside and you can something of the place I was raised in,” Ghubari offered.

“I would love to wander around the area and see more of where you were raised,” Luka said with a smile. “Would you mind if I run out for a few moments? I feel as though it may be an appropriate situation to get Mukin,” she tilted her head, and one of her ears flopped over slightly.

Ghubari smiled more deeply. “Sure, why not. When you come back I’ll have things re-set.”

After Luka stepped out, the captain called for the program to restart, but the house still was there. Instead, Ghubari stood outside of it, and the sun reflected off the white washed walls, Rectangular in shape, it was fairly nondescript and there was little to it besides the garden plot to the side. Lining the dirt road that led through this part of the village were similar white washed houses. Bicycles leaned against the sides in the shade here and there, and larger growing plots were grouped together every few houses adding to the community’s food production. Filling in the spaces between homes were the small trees, bushes and dry grasses

There wasn’t much to speak of in the village itself, aside from a larger community hall and clinic, and beyond its ambiguous limits, the Makonde Plateau stretched in all directions, the warm red soil revealed on the unpaved roads and where the vegetation was more sparse.

Moving barefoot, she simply meandered slowly under the hot sun, her growing halo of wooly black hair covered by a head scarf that matched the purple and black patterned skirt wrapped around her hips.

Soon enough, Luka returned. In her hand she held a lead, and on the other end of the lead was the Borkin. About the size of a cat, Mukin looked for all the world like a winged rabbit with abnormally long legs.

Mukin looked up at Ghubari, then tugged on the leash, his little fluffy tail wiggling back and forth.

Luka smiled slightly. “Captain, this is Mukin. Mukin, sit.”

Immediately the animal stopped pulling and sat down on his bum, looking back at Luka for a moment.
