Oh, this was going to be harder than she had imagined! But still, Ghubari couldn’t help but smile even as she felt a twisting in her stomach. It wasn’t the same, and yet the memories of the bond were still there as well as that faded link that told her he was okay, wherever he was.

Rising, the captain looked over the setting and gestured with a dark hand. “Shall we walk? Luckily for Mukin, I’ve left the predators out of this particular program.”

Luka nodded with a slight chuckle. “Good for us too,” she commented. Mukin sniffed around his surroundings for a few moments before heading off in one direction, exploring. Luka followed, a smile on her face.

“Generally, though up here on the Plateau there aren’t any really dangerous predators you and I would have to worry about. All the large animals and large cats are all way farther out down in the valley. There’s a waterway through there and most will head for there,” Ghubari said as they walked. Their feet kicked up small mounts of red dust from the dry dirt road. The sparsely treed landscape had plenty of grasses and small shrubs but they could easily keep an eye on Mukin unless he decided to hide behind or amongst them.

“I sometimes miss Tanzania, but after so many years in artificial enironments I can’t handle the heat nearly well as I use to,” the captain remarked.

“Hmm, there is always a sense of missing one’s homeland,” Luka agreed as she walked, watching Mukin with a small smile. “Mukin would be a little less vulnerable if he was more like the wild Borkin - the wings on them are, shall I say, not vestigial,” Luka explained.

“So, what stops him from using them here?” Ghubari asked curiously. The fine red silt rose up in tiny clouds as they moved and she could feel it between her toes. It was strangely familiar even though it wasn’t something she had felt for many years now.

“His wings are too small to provide sufficient lift for the weight of his body. The holodeck does not allow beings to take actions that are physically impossible for them, such as flight for a flightless being,” Luka explained.

“Ahh, I see,” Koraia said thoughtfully.

She dug her toes into the dirt, feeling the softness of the silt and tilting her head with curiosity. She was glad this was only a simulation and the silt would be removed from her fur the moment they left.

Walking along the main road, it wasn’t long before they left the small village behind. It was a strange feeling that she wasn’t entirely sure how to put into words, but this program had shifted at some point into one where being ‘home’ wasn’t so strange for her. The Athena was home, but somewhere along the way this place was home too. “It was strange growing up here. I always felt like I was missing out on something. It wasn’t until I left for boarding school at twelve that I understood what the rest of the world was like, and how most everyone else lived. It’s a strange thing to look around at a place like this now and feel nostalgic for its simplicity.”
