“I know Ben, I do. I spent a long while after the Athena was destroyed trying to reckon with the guilt. That guilt is gone, but I’m mindful that I once again have a traumatized crew.” She tilted her head back, feeling the lightheadedness and delayed perceptual reaction that told her she was well and truly drunk. Sitting was fine, but getting up would be a problem! Maybe. She had a solid leg again- that made things easier.

“What do you do about the one that slips through your fingers? The one that you feel you could have done more for, that are owed more than they got? How do you wrap your head around that one and move on?”

Fl. Captain Koraia, CO

“I had a very cynical Space Psychology professor in Medical school, he said ‘if your crew isn’t traumatized somebody isn’t doing their job well’” Benjamin laughed at the idea of his old teacher “The Idea was that trauma can heal with time and therapy, this means both physical and mental trauma.” Benjamin said not knowing what his own point was “Besides this was one hell of an adventure, I got to heal people with alcohol, I killed an acidic tentacle creature with my scalpel then committed temporal suicide
all without a drop of whiskey. That’s something to tell the grandchildren.”

She chuckled. “It’s a good story. I’ve accumulated a few by now. At least by the point that they’ll be truly interesting to other people it’ll be less of a security issue to talk about. Maybe that’s a part of it. So much of the action the Athena, both of them, have seen have been classified or restricted in some way. We can’t talk about it but with each other, and those cleared. But I think sometimes it’s nice to share things with other people outside of the situations. At least I found that after I lost my leg. I was able to talk to my old friends about what happened since it wasn’t classified. It made the situation more real to process. Not easier, just… less like you dreamed it up.”

Fl. Captain Koraia, CO

“Well doesn’t Starfleet have Doctors that are read in on certain classified situations so they can give counsel on situations such as those. Just because something is a secret doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be able to talk about it” Ben said more lucidly than before “There are some good holographic programs that are sometimes used, useful when you can isolate the prog.. progam… programme and delete all rele.. rele.. important stuff” He managed to slur out “I think it’s time for a water break” He said reaching into his bag of tricks and grabbing a water bottle and started drinking greedily “You want?” The now very wet doctor asked

Dr. Grey - CMO

Ghubari shook her head and then instantly regretted it. She was saying no to his comments, not the water, so took the bottle from his and drank. “If I need to talk to someone, there are counsellors, and yes, physicians who have the ability to listen to confidential stuff. But it’s s’not the same as having friends outside of those who are in the thick of it with you that can help give you perspective. I don’t know if you’ve realized this yet Ben, but captains like me don’t tend to make a lot of friends. And when we do, they tend to be people you fight alongside with.”

Fl. Captain Koraia, CO

Ben nodded in understanding “I’ve known a few people like that, forge friends through the flames of conflict. I personally prefer a drinking companion or someone who properly compliments my vices” His mind went immediately to Australia and his unexpected waking up in there almost a year ago to the day with his cousin and Best Friend Jack. Then he missed Timor “Well I’ve been fairly devoid of personal tragedies, The Polaris, Genesis, and especially Zeta One were all fairly calm assignments for me. This was the first time I’ve endured proper harshness” He said with a sad half-smile.
