Moving the injured crew member to a bed, Janna took a moment to survey the situation. She wasn’t a physician, but she could help as a field medic and more important soothe those in trauma.

The power fluctuated but only briefly and thankfully not long enough to put Ceres in further danger. One young woman staggered in after Janna with burns on her upper body. She was muttering to herself “Phaser fire, from nowhere, shuttlebay, vacuum”. She collapsed on the floor.

Doing surgeries on a Starship was no easy feat, especially during dangerous situations such as that exact moment. Benjamin’s instincts were on the spot when he turned of the lethal instrument in his hand when the explosion occurred narrowly avoiding gutting his patient. Turning around his training kicked in immediately. “Nurse, autosuture the Patient, keep him under the field and monitor his status” He ordered quickly removing the surgical gown and moved to the side to grab a Medical Kit

“Niles, assist Miss Kingston with her patient” He when the third woman entered the room. Cursing he ran towards her and opened the pack, grabbing the Tricorder and flipping it open and started a general scan.

The patient that Janna had brought in was suffering from the rapid decompression of the shuttlebay as was the woman who had fallen to the ground but she also had a dislocated shoulder and a broken ulna from being thrown about by the explosion. Many more were coming in now some of which had been snatched from the jaws of death by quick-thinking engineers and security.

“Just hang in there,” Janna said with a reassuring smile.

One ensign had tears in his eyes as he deposited a deathly still officer onto a nearby biobed. “No transporters,” he said sorrowfully, “we couldn’t get them all back in, we used shuttles with grapples but it was too slow”.

Kingston’s demeanour shifted to a more sombre one. “You did the best you could,” she called over to the ensign.

Liam helped pass the wounded woman off to Niles. Deep down, while he had some medical knowledge… it wasn’t enough to act as an ideal doctor. He could only assist and he felt it wasn’t enough. Silently he took a moment to observe the damage as more wounded filed in. They almost seemed endless. When one was taken and looked over, two more entered to increase the urgency. He took this time to figure out where his energy was most beneficial to focus on.

Benjamin with the assistance of two nurses picked up and carefully moved the injured woman to a nearby bed “Terakine” He grabbed his trusted hypospray and inserted the vial and set it for two milliliters. He injected the woman with the pain reliever then turned back to his medkit and grabbed the bone regenerator “I’m going to repair your forearm then someone will be with you later to help with your shoulder, lie still and be patient” He said as he used the device with care.

The woman visibly relaxed when the painkiller kicked in but her eyes were haunted, “I’ve never seen someone die like that, decompression, the light just fades out of their eyes… like a fire dying in the cold of winter”.

The biobeds were filling up with people with similar injuries. Ensign Ceres was starting to come round.

“Doc Grey, where can I help?” Janna asked. “And mind if a grab a dose of clotting factors? Preventative step, under the circumstances.” She had been on regular prophylactics for so many years she could dose herself blindfolded. Well, maybe that was a slight exaggeration. But only just.

“Grab what you need, also grab a dermal regenerator, go over superficial injuries and make sure they don’t bleed out.” He said as he finished with the broken boned lady and moved on to a nearby burn victim, applying pain killers and dermaline gel “We’ll also have patients in shock, you have skills that could help them, do so.”

Janna knocked off a salute. “On it,” she said as she threaded her way through the med bay to the medication supply. It didn’t take her long to acquire a hyposray and have the replicator concoct the correct mixture of proteins and clotting factors. Using her fingers to find the right spit, she injected the hypo’s contents and set the empty tool away. Back to work!

Karina was mentally kicking herself. Just when you think everything’s under control… She had been about to say that she was glad the crisis was over, when the whole ship rocked like it had been kicked by some stellar being.

As the patients started coming in, she handed the worst back towards the Doc and helped out with the stabilization and categorizing of those coming in. Thankfully many were able to be put in hallway with a shot of painkiller to wait their turn. The more critically burned and injured we soon taking up every available bed and chair in the bay.

A nurse, unwilling to bother the Doc, came to Karina to say the patient that had started the whole night of activity, was waking up. Going to his side she smiled at him as his eyes fluttered. She lowered the field and gently held his hand a moment. “Easy, Ensign. You’ve been thru quite an ordeal. We’ve managed to stop the replication of matter in your stomach but we still need to finish getting it all out. I’m sure you feel more than full. I just need to ask you to please bear with us as we take care of an emergency. The ship decompressed and casualties are severe. Nurse NE Marquis will stay with you. The stasis field is going back up for your protection. But she’s right here. Ok? “

She hoped the man understood enough to let her get back to helping Doctor Grey.

Ceres looked up at her blurrily. “What the hell happened? I came off shift after visiting a friend in transporter room one, went to get something to eat and then it felt like my stomach started to … grow something…”.

A solemn procession started to come into the sickbay as three recovered bodies were brought in and placed quietly with some ceremony in an area to await the standard autopsy. Ceres looked a little wild when he saw them and his face was questioning.

It was chaos and sometimes amongst such scenes it was easy to gravitate towards the the loudest patients. But Janna knew that careful observation and assessment of even the seemingly ‘okay’ patients could reveal someone who needed her skills more.
