“Don’t wish for it, Ben, really. I could have done with half of the ‘forging’ I’ve been through. Somewhere along the line I went from being a tactically minded captain of a tactical destroyer to a captain who wouldn’t mind a bit of calm on her beast of a cruise ship,” Ghubari said wistfully. “Not enough to be bored, of course. Just enough to feel like we’re not constantly sparring with death.”

Ben waved the water, probably meant to be some sort of acknowledgement but really just seemed like he couldn’t hold his… water “I’m fine with not being a forged man. Hell I was fine with being a junior officer but they just kept making me Chief. My life plans didn’t have me as Chief MO til I was Thirty, which I am, now but I wasn’t five years ago when they first promoted me.”

“Now that you’ve done it, would you have it any other way?” Ghubari asked, propping one heel on the edge of her seat, add resting her arm across her knee so she could prop up her head with her hand.

Benjamin shrugged “I dunno, I have all this experience, running sickbays and surgical wings. When I put in my Starship transfer request last year I got offers from several Civilian Hospitals on Colony and Homeworlds. Maybe I’ll do that in ten years, retire somewhere remote like Oed V or new France and run a hospital” He chuckled “Well I guess you’re right, I wouldn’t change anything.”

She chuckled. “It’s hard for people like us, Ben. We like the idea of a quieter life, but once presented with it we quite often decide that what we have is far better, even if it is crazy-inducing.”

“I guess that’s why the fleet has such a history of having restless and antsy older officers. They all miss the excitement of the frontier or something similar. Well at least here’s to hoping that our next mission will be a tad less exciting than our last”

She lifted her now empty glass and grinned. “Hear, hear!”

Setting the cup in the chair’s holder, she attempted to push herself upwards- albeit not so successfully. “Okay, sure, I can sit for a moment,” Ghubari said with a slight laugh, her cheeks warming at how quickly immobile she was. Then again, she was pretty certain Ben hadn’t been playing entirely fair on the alcohol front and well, he did give her a top notch remedy for later. But how exactly was a captain to get back to her quarters with anything amounting dignity. “I might have to call the Chief of Security for an escort.” Oh, Konral would be very, very amused, indeed!

Ben blurted out a giggle “I think I’ll pass on that” He stood up, straightened his jacket and immediately lost balance and fell back into his seat. “I might just take a nap here, be one with nature and all that” He laughed at the idea “The last time I drank this much I woke up on the other side of Earth” he said to himself.

“I’m not sure if I want to know that story or not,” she said with a lopsided grin. “And you certainly don’t want to hear about the time I was convinced to drink a whole bunch of mbege, and then take a bunch of a hallucinogenic.” She glanced at him, attempting seriousness. “It was a therapeutic thing we were attempting. Suffice to say I didn’t touch banana beer for a very long time afterwards.”

Ben laughed then started repeating the word “mbege” several times much to his amusement “No captain I think some things should remain strictly private, I don’t want your opinion of me to change… and you wouldn’t want your doctor to think you’re a druggie of sorts” He said clearly joking.++

She smirked. “Well, you already know about my spiritual practices. I did tell you I use a small amount of iboga to induce a deeper meditative state, right? I’m sure we had that conversation when you first came aboard, but I think I’m too drunk to be sure of anything,” she said, trying to lessen her gesturing as she talked. Beyond tipsy she was, but that didn’t mean that she wasn’t still aware of her actions.
