Ben nodded “Yes quite so.” He grabbed his medical pack and looked into it “Uhm question, do we have any idea of its intelligence?” He asked as a thought suddenly occurred “I mean it’s not common but neither is it impossilbe that a creature like that possesses beyond rudimentary intelligence.”

Liam thought for a moment. It was a good question and one they had not touched on in any real depth. In fact, the main focus of their research was getting the creature out rather than co-existing with it. What they learned in regards to that area were mostly due to accidents rather than controlled experiments.

“I am not honestly sure,” Liam began.

“As far as I can recall, it only took over when it was starving. The scans of its brain didn’t suggest any activity beyond rudimentary when it was content. Mostly the creature seems to just exist in my body until it is starving. Then it influences my mind.”

Liam decided to clarify it so Grey didn’t get the wrong assumption.

“I’m still aware of what I’m doing, but it’s hazy and unclear. Like I’ve been drugged and to stop it, I have this desire to seek out radiation sources. That’s the best I can describe it to be like.”

“I see, so it’s likely a creature run purely on instinct, not reason. Uncommon but not unheard of.” Benjamin mused “I suggest we wait to take any samples until we’re in Sickbay. Right now I have a few test ideas, an examination of the Creatures sensory abilities, pain measurements or threshold tests. What do you like?” He asked.

“I suppose that is the best way to describe it.” Liam nodded, feeling it was a correct assessment.

“We should start off with sensory abilities. It’s the mildest test compared to the other, in both stress and defensive responses. Pain should be done last because it could result in the most hostile reaction. I rather have extra precautions in place beforehand.”

Benjamin nodded, tapped a few commands and the radiation cage disappeared and was replaced with an adjustable table. “Have a seat, I’m going to place some scanners over where the creature is, hopefully, it will not perceive them as a threat. He opened his toolkit and started removing several small circular scanning devices “We’ll start with a Neurocortical Monitor and a small hammer” He smiled as he grabbed the small device and raised it up.

Liam nodded. His figure lifted from his seated position, taking a moment to stretch his legs. The muscle worked out the tingling leaving him to finally walk over to the table. He lifted himself to sit on it. Letting his legs dangle down, he observed Grey hold up one disc.

“As long as it doesn’t create pain or hurt me, I don’t think it will react. From what I recall, it usually doesn’t until the pain starts. Then it’s abrupt. ” Liam pointed out calmly while he waited for the doctor to continue.

“No worries, that comes later. Now we just see what we can detect with this” He raised the two objects. He walked behind Liam and placed the monitor over his body where the mass of the being itself was located and then activated the monitor. Checking the screens around him to see if it was turned on. Then he activated the bed console and entered a few commands and the bed was raised a bit “This will be a simple reflex check, I want to test if the creature is monitoring any other pathways than just your pain receptors or feeding on your emotions.” He explained. For a moment he wondered if he should, in fact, be explaining but decided that even if the creature could understand him it wouldn’t matter. This was a reflex test nothing more. “Nowadays we can simply test this with various different tools but back during medieval medicine times they used this” He wiggled the small hammer between his fingers “This, of course, was during the times of exploratory surgeries, brain drillings, and other barbaric medical traditions. This was one of the lesser invasive tests, actually quite clever” He explained as he walked towards the man. “Here goes” He said as he gently tapped the hammer at the Scientist’s knee.
