Orvos simply grinned. “Yes, I know what you mean. It’s not always easy. Losing something, adapting without it, and then finding it again. You want to stay adapted to not having it, just in case. But you also desperately want to keep that which was gone. Hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst. Preparing for the worst might soften the blow, should things get bad again. Then again, you never truly live with what you had back if you’re constantly preparing to lose it.”

His eyes were intent on Koraia. “It’s real. You’re not imagining things.”

In the back of his mind, he had wished the same had been true for himself. Losing his wife and then finding her in the Nexus. But…it wasn’t real. Not really anyway. It was all in his mind. In reality, she was dead. Lost in the borg invasion of his homeworld. He had adapted.

Her eyes snapped to him, their pale amber depths seeking something in his. “Well, I’m glad you’re so certain. I don’t think I could handle such a cruel joke,” she said, her voice soft. She could only sense his emotions and not the thoughts behind them, but a part of her understood that he had lost something tremendous as well. She suspected he didn’t share her happy fate.

He could sense the searching, but there was no answer he could give. Not now anyway. “No no. You won’t have to handle it. How do you feel now that’s it back?” he asked, gesturing to her leg that had come back after their trip through the mysterious nebula.

Yes, questions for her would do much better than to be scrutinized and examined. He had plenty of secrets to keep.

“It’s been… a process. A part of me rebelled at the idea of going through with it at all. I’m so used to the struggle, Orvos, that when something is seemingly handed to me, I’m skeptical. But also, I had to figure out what it meant. I am the person I am because I went through all that horrible stuff. I changed in a fundamental way and as the years went on I found myself finding my own place again. All of a sudden I’m able to stand on a leg as if nothing happened. But it did happen, even though the obvious evidence of it has disappeared. I’ve had to reconcile that strange sensation.”

Bump when you get to it :)

“It will take time. Learn what you can, because once the sensation is gone, things will never be the same.” It was rather simple and obvious. “Someday you’ll get fully used to that leg again. So whatever happens, never forgetwhat happened. Sometimes we don’t fully realize things until something goes missing. I believe everything is happening as it should in its own time. You lost it, you learned, and now you have to work on how to adjust to having it again. Just more to learn if you ask me.” He gave her a grin.

And then he added. “Besides, you say you’re used to the struggle. Perhaps it is now time for you to struggle with that which you struggle the most with: Being handed something miraculous. ” He quirked a curious eyebrow up as he eyed her reaction.
