Marishka waved Ted over. Excellent bar tender that he was, he approached and set down three glasses.

“The fifteen it is then. And my thanks again to your lovely mother.”

“I will send her your regards in my next vid home.”

She removed the bottle and slowly opened it pouring a bit into each glass.

“To lovely gifts from a vibrant new friend.” Marishka said toasting Izzy.

She smiled. It was nice to drink with other people once in a while. Alcohol, especially whiskey had been in her life since the moment she was born. Her mother and father ran the brewery. Her uncle ran the local pub which was quite the hit to locals and tourists alike. Her parents had raised 9 kids in all and only one of them finished his tour of duty with the Marines and started working in the Brewery. Maybe eventually, more of her brothers would retire and join her parents, but Izzy wasn’t one to leave a place of service. It was why even after all she had been through, that she had remained in Star Fleet, taking a serious demotion and sliding into security from the Marines. It had been her hail mary during a time when she thought she was going to be forced out for good.

She lifted her glass acknowledging the toast, “To new friends.” and then sipped her whiskey. It was, as she thought it would be, exactly perfect for her own tastes. She watched the other two who had joined her to see how they liked it.

Ted tasted the whiskey with a critical palate. He wanted to know whom to recommend it to, what it might be served with, and when to stop pouring. Smiling, he bowed slightly and took the glass to the bar to continue his examination.

Marishka sipped slowly, enjoying every drop with an eye towards indulgence and enjoyment. She would make this a special thing in the lounge. Not to be served up like some common beverage.

“Most enjoyable. I have a question for you Izzy. I’m taking ideas on what to name this lounge. Once I have a big enough list, the Captain and I will choose one and, of course, there will have to be a lounge naming party. Do you have any thoughts on what I should name it?” she asked finishing her drink.

  • Marishka

Izzy licked her lips absently enjoying the taste of the liquor she loved. The question caught her off guard and she had to think on it, but as usual, she simply was terrible at naming things. She laughed a little and shook her head. “I am afraid not. My mother tried so hard to get me to name a vintage whiskey. Months she would ask me, gently prod me to find something in my brain that would suit, but I just never had a knack for naming anything. I am not really creative in that way and I have long ago accepted this fault of mine.”

Marishka smiled a bit and finished her glass, savoring every drop.

“Oh that’s alright. I just wanted to ask as many people as I could but I believe that task is almost done. And as for you. I’m certain you are creative in other ways so don’t worry about naming things if you don’t think it’s your strong suit.”

As Marishka spoke, Rachael appeared at the table with a small basket of fried things and several dipping sauces. She set them down for Marishka, showed her something written on a PaDD, and walked away.

“You’ll have to forgive me Izzy. Due to my racial background I’m nearly an obligate carnivore with a very high metabolism.” she said dipping a fried prawn into honey mustard sauce.

“Well, I can knit and I can dance. I think those two things are pretty creative. I leave word smithing to other people if at all possible. If I ever have a pet, no doubt I will have someone else name it. I did when I was a kid with our family dogs. I could never come up with a suitable name.”

She sat down once more and took a bite of her capreze salad, watching Marishka eat fried prawns. “Normally, I am also an unabashed carnivore, but I had a pretty heavy lunch already. I don’t think my metabolism is as high as yours but as much as I work out or dance, or practice or run, I tend to have to eat about every two hours unless I am sleeping. What about you?”

Marishka set her plate aside and answered Izzy.

“I’m pretty much a grazer with a hearty dinner a few times a week. I had a friend, I didn’t remember what part of Earth she was form, I’m sorry. She said I reminded her of one of those pretty little colored birds. They have to eat every half hour or so although I don’t think I’m quite that bad.” she said reaching for a second smaller plate, “Besides, we’re always trying to come up with new and interesting things around here so quality control is a must.”

  • Marishka

Izzy thought about her own knowledge of birds and wrinkled her forehead as she guessed, “Hummingbird? I think those are the tiny ones with the voracious appetite due to how fast their wings have to be.” She wasn’t sure but then again, it didn’t matter overly much if she was wrong or right. It was a guess as Ireland did not have them but San Francisco might have. She couldn’t remember if she had seen them. All she got in her memory was a vaguely tiny bird with pointy wings and a long pointy beak.

Marishka smiled.

“Oh yes, I think you’re right. Beautiful little feathered jewels. Izzy, do you have some free time soon? You see, I would like a tour of the ship that is different from what my wonderful volunteer staff might give me. I want to know ins and outs, where people feel comfortable, you know?”

Truly the idea had just come to Marishka’s mind a few minutes ago and Izzy seemed like the perfect person to ask.

The request caught her by surprise. Isabel did not often consider herself to be the most social of creatures. She had a good rapport with ensigns though and seemed to get along well enough with the upper ranks. “I suppose everyone is different in where they find the most serenity. I wonder if my answers would be very different than any other guide might give though. I can of course, give it a try. I have my next full day off in a couple of days. We could do it then?”

Delaney, Sec

Marishka smiled.

“Oh yes! Come by in the morning. I’ll have a good breakfast for us then we can take it slow if you like.” she said cheerily.
