Returning to the couch Rovan sat down beside Allie and passed her a bowl of pudding. He had decided last moment to switch to a mix of Ktarian chocolate pudding and hokey pokey ice cream. Spooning a large portion into his mouth, he savoured the chocolate cake and ice cream hash as he looked at the performance on the screen. “I’ve seen something like this, at a Ktarian music festival. I don’t think you would have ever seen one but they are an experience, I think you would love it. I’ll take you to one one day when we have some leave, or to the holodeck and one of the replays of one.”

Allison nodded in agreement, her mouth full of ice cream. The story was exciting, a tale of love, riches, betrayal, and revenge. Allison couldn’t help but sing along at several points in the show.

Rovan relaxed on the couch beside her, placing his bowl to one side and sliding his arm behind her as they watched, his ankle resting on his knee and bobbing in time to the music even though he had no idea of the words. Watching Allie sing, he grinned at how much passion she showed for the work.

“You know, if they turned that into a Klingon Opera, it would probably be very popular. They love the betrayal and revenge thing. And throwing things in romance, come to think of it.” It hadn’t been exactly an easy story for Rovan to follow, but he had enjoyed it even though many references and themes were clearly from early period Earth, a time that Allie was much closer to than him, a whole other world in fact was where he was from.

Allie nodded cheerfully. “I’m sorry if any of it was particularly confusing,” she said with a smile after the show had ended, leaning up to give him a small peck on the cheek. “I’m going to be honest with you though, I really don’t understand the popularity of Klingon Opera. It’s just a bunch of loud shouting in a language I don’t understand. I much prefer Musicals, with their dancing and spoken dialogue and much more energetic… energy. I could never get into Human Operas either though, to be honest…” she said thoughtfully.

She finished off the last bits of her ice cream, licking the melted cream from the bottom of her bowl.

Leaning over, Rovan returned the kiss although his one wasn’t on her cheek, it was on her lips and was full. Then he pulled back slightly, and took the bowl from her hands. “Klingon Opera is all about the feeling, the language is harsh and guttural but you have to admire a culture that puts so much emphasis on love, passion and loyalty when every waking moment is filled with preparation for battle, and is willing to show it’s passion for that with terrible, terrible singing and posturing.” He grinned and pushed himself to his feet, moving to put the bowls in the replicator for recycling.

“I did see a human musical once,” Rovan said as he returned to his fiance, “it had this big green guy and another guy wearing a donkey suit. It was pretty catchy even if the big green guy did look like an overweight Andorian that had eaten too much and turned green. Had a funny accent as well come to think of it, did you ever see that one?”
