A grin spread across Janna’s face. “Nah, that would be boring. You don’t strike me as the boring type.”

Kingston sipped her drink again, allowing a moment to pause and think. “Any particular challenges or difficult moments in the last year or so?” she said.

Jessica’s grin widened further as she nodded her agreement with Kingston’s assessment. The counselor’s pause to think might have put some on edge, but she leaned back in her chair, shifting to make herself more comfortable as she gave the woman time to consider. “Well, moving place to place rapidly wasn’t the best introduction to Starfleet, but I’m glad to be settled here.” She paused herself for a moment. “While I’m never truly lonely with a whole collection of older siblings who like to make their presence known, it’s been challenging getting to know people socially on ships.” Her face had sobered a little as she shared her slight frustration with Kingston. Her eyes flicked upward toward the ceiling as though she was briefly lost in a memory and a small smile ticked on her lips again, but her focus soon was back on the conversation at hand.

Janna smiled and nodded. “Tell me about the siblings. Are you close? Do you have other family in Starfleet?” While it could seem that she was prying and going down the typical ‘counsellor’ conversation route, her objective was rather different than it would seem and dare she say probably more useful for this kind of chat.

Jessica’s small smile rapidly turned into a full-on laugh as she listened to Kingston’s next question. “Yes, we’re very close,” she responded, her voice still full of laughter. “And they’re all in Starfleet. All five of them.” Her emphasis on the word “all” was slightly overblown, but in a humorous manner. She gently wiped at the slight bit of moisture collecting in the corner of her eye before wittily raising her eyebrow. “I was the slowest to get on board the Starfleet train, actually. Three of them went through medical school via Starfleet and the other two are in security. I went to medical school before deciding on Starfleet as a career path.”
