OOC: This is pre-sim but I’d say after her surreptitious meeting with Stark and Konral.
She couldn’t sleep. It wasn’t the first time, nor would it be the last. Occupational hazard. Rolling over, she kissed Konral gently on the cheek as he slept and snuck out of bed, quietly dressing in her typical colourful khanga wrap skirt (this one in gold, black and purple) and a sleeveless form fitting top in black. It was more or less her off-duty uniform and had been for many, many years.

Sometimes, Ghubari forgot how much time had passed. It seemed to her to be this amorphous sensation punctuated by massive life-altering events. She found herself having to pause right now and figure out where she was at.

Normally that would involve deep meditation and her iboga, but her lioness guide had been notably absent as of late and she felt it was some sort of key portent that made her uneasy.

Slipping quietly into the lounge, the empath was aware of those few people present, but she paid them no overt attention, beelining for the grand piano sitting proudly in one corner near the windows. As promised, Marishka had left it alone. Her dark fingers caressed the edge of the glossy surface as she moved around it, letting her fingers drop to her sides as she took a seat on the bench. Taking a deep breath, Ghubari simply surrendered herself and began warming up with some very basic jazz études.

The piano notes slowly entered his awareness. At first, he did not notice the music. His attention was focused on a number of small stone pieces of varying shape, from which he had constructed a small free standing structure on the table before him. Each piece was carefully selected and chosen to represent an idea, with the overall goal of the exercise being that as one ordered the stones, one also brought order to the mind. It wasn’t quite the same as the Vulcan game of Khal Toh, but was a similar experience.

However, as Va’rek became aware of the piano music, it stirred him. Something in him was touched in a way he’d not prepared for. The unexpected surge of emotion did to his frame of mind what his shakey hand did to his puzzle. The pieces collapsed.

He sat there at the table, at the edge of the room farthest from the door, and moved his hazel eyes from the fallen stones to the large Viewport. He searched the stars for some pattern. Something to hold on to.

She could almost hear her adolescent piano teacher tapping out the beats with almost a hint of aggression as Ghubari’s fingers moved across the keys. How many lessons had she had where she had gotten frustrated at her inability to keep the pace of the piece she was supposed to be playing. She smirked to herself as she remembered the one day she finally lost it and shouted at her teacher. It had ended up being a funny and poignant moment to reflect on later.

She moved into a more complex étude with a blues feel. It was slower and Koraia let herself relax into it, letting the music take over and her worries become distant things for another time. She even started to hum a harmony to the piece she played, not even worrying too much about how it might seem. She was still aware of the crew around her, but only peripherally.
