Va’rek had pointedly been trying to do his job without drawing any attention to himself; and while he was indeed quite focused, he couldn’t help but be aware of the conversion going on around him. Thus, he did hear the words Merri spoke… However, it took at least a heartbeat or two to comprehend that they had been spoken to him. Once that barrier in his mind had been smashed, the icy feeling of dread snaked through his guts and he froze. Nearly imperceptibly, his hands shook as they hovered above the console he’d been working at. Finally…

He turned and faced the others, at first as if silently asking Who… Me?! Then, once it was apparent… He answered quietly, hot shame coursing through him though no outward sign of this was given.

“I am afraid that I am unable to do as you require.”

His face fell, just slightly.

As the group spoke the comm from the Sickbay opened once more and the panicked voice of the Chief Medical officer sounded =^=Sickbay to Bridge, deactivate all Sickbay Holographic projectors immediately=^= The channel closed as soon as it opened.

Turning at the hips, Koraia simply focused on Va’rek and pointed to him, knowing he’d jump to action immediately. =/\=We’re on it, Chief. Stand by.=/\= The captain didn’t ask for an update but then again it was assumed she’d be given one when the moment was right.

Va’rek stiffened and spun around to his console since he already had power supply pulled up. He wondered if Jessica was alright down there as he began trying to cut power to the holo projectors in Sickbay. He did not notice, but under the stress of action, his hands remained steady as he worked.

The captain seemed to be waiting patiently, but anyone who knew her would know there was an undercurrent of tension as she waited for more information.

Merri had been about to speak to Va’rek again but she froze as the call from sickbay came through and her face went ashen white. Unbidden, a small cry left her lips, “Mother…”

Ghubari stepped right close to ‘Merri’ and reached out her hand, resting it on the other woman’s arm. She shook her head. “You can’t. Not unless there is a very good reason. You have to trust us to do what we can. Trust my crew. Trust me,” she said intently, fixing her gaze on the grown alternate universe child of her dear friends. A part of her wanted to shout down to Sickbay for an update, but they would tell her when there was something to know. She had been a commanding officer long enough to know that she just had to let go of having control over every situation and let her crew get on with whatever was needed.
