The Vulcan raised one eyebrow and spoke in a deadpan tone, just a hint of irony audible. “There are Vulcan Poets…” It wasn’t a smirk, but it was as close as he allowed. His slender hands settled on the keys though, and he placed his fingers gingerly before softly arpeggiating a C Minor chord.

-Lt.J.G. V’arek

“That there are,” Ghubari said as she set her right hand loosely over the keys. She took his C Minor chord and played out a harmonic minor scale with a swing beat. “Jazz is as methodical as it is instinctive. There’s still structure and theory behind it. But it’s what happens in between, in the spaces that makes it different. It conjures feelings in a different way.” Va’rek seemed to lean more towards emotion than one might expect fo Vulcans, but Ghubari had long ago learned to never make assumptions about people.

Marishka stepped out of a different set of shadows than Stark had recently inhabited. Bowing slightly, she greeted the threesome with a gesture of welcome and hospitality.

“Captain, gentlemen.”

Ghubari looked over at Mariskha and smiled, her fingers still moving. “Good evening, Mariskha. You’re more than welcome to pull up a chair and join us.”

The Vulcan watched her hands, his keen hearing catching the places where the notes danced in and out of natural C, changing the modal tonality of the scale slightly. “A rigidly defined set of rules… used with improvisational musings… Fascinating.”

At this, he glanced up at Marishka, nodding a greeting.

-Va’rek

Stark stood stock still allowing life to flow around him as he analyzed everything and all around him, his favorite thing.

“Exactly,” Koraia said with a grin. “And jazz, like other music forms can shift from upbeat and light, to dark and moody, with only a few key and pace changes,” she said, moving from their light and swinging tones to one that was heavier and almost sombre.

Marishka nodded and smiled. She knew a thing or two about pace changes. She pulled up a chair and sat down for a bit.

“That really is a beautiful instrument. I am so pleased that you left it here. It has such a grand presence. Truly an asset to the space it occupies.” she said.

Ghubari smiled widely as she played, a strange contrast to the moody tones her fingers coaxed from the grand piano. “That it is, and so am I. It only made sense though. I was used to having access to a piano and after our last ship went down, it only made sense that our new one had one too. And if I wanted something decent, well, best to make sure I picked it out myself.” She chuckled. “Interesting feat getting a piano on the ship. We ended up having to use the cargo transporters to beam it in here.”

“Useful things, cargo transporters” Stark suddenly realized he’d spoken aloud and stopped suddenly.

The Vulcan had been watching the keys as the Captain played a particular melody she’d used caught his attention and he seemed to forget the conversation going on around him as he haltingly copied it and then used a chord inversion and a relative minor key change to alter it slightly. The result wasn’t earth-shattering by any means because he wasn’t a proficient pianist, but the melody had a haunting quality to it.

-Va’rek

Marishka didn’t quite catch Stark’s eye but his comment did not go unnoticed by her. Instead she nodded and smiled encouragingly as Va’rek played.
