And impish grin tugged at the corners of her mouth as she mustered Paul for a couple of moments. Mischievousness was written all over her face. There were many things she could tell. So for a few moments she contemplated what to say and in the end went for the something everyone could find out who had access to her Starfleet record. “Well, I blew up a science lab,” she replied with a shrug, as if it was no big deal or an every day occurrence.

Viyara laughed out loud in response and for a couple of moments she left him hanging. Then, still chuckling, she said, “Well, the short answer is: I’m a biochemist and I like to experiment. Sometimes unpredictable things happen or an experiment goes wrong.” She shrugged nonchalantly. “Let’s just say I learned that day which chemicals not to mix.”

“Wish I could’a been there to see that,” Paul laughed and crinkled his eyes “Biochemist eh, so what’s the main attraction of that field for you… or do you just like to blow stuff up?”

“Blowing things up is certainly part of the fun,” Viyara said with a wink. She then fell silent for a moment and her expression turned more pensive. Eventually she said, “For me it’s the mix of disciplines, I’d say. It’s not just chemistry or biology. But it’s all about exploring the chemistry of living organisms and the molecular basis for the changes occurring in living cells. And doing that by using methods from various fields: chemistry, physics, molecular biology and immunology. And other than say theoretical physics, it is very hands on. And it’s super helpful in my other science passion: forensic science!” Ash she spoke, her eyes sparkled with joy and excitement and she was radiating confidence.

“You’re obviously dedicated First Mate Nazeen,’ he adjusted course and looked back again, “I’m afraid the only chemistry I’m any good at is cooking, wouldn’t say that it has the capacity to shake the quadrant like your field of expertise though. So how did you find out that you were into it?”.

“Being able to cook can shake up the quadrant in different ways,” Viyara said mischievously. “And to answer your question: In science class in school, actually. From my very first science lesson I was fascinated by all of it and it became clear fairly quickly that I was really good at it. So pretty early on I had a heavy focus on science in my schedule. I even took extra classes,” she chuckled. What she didn’t say was that it hadn’t been easy for the teachers to convince her parents to put a heavy focus on math and science. Her father had said it was a waste of time. But in the end he had agreed. Neither did she say that she stayed as long in school as possible because she didn’t want to go home. But that was all ancient history. So why should she mention it?

He waved his hands slightly in mock horror, “Extra classes, I’m in the presence of greatness.” He looked out into the stars and then back again. “The only thing I ever took extra classes in was the study of the inside of my eyelids.” He grinned, “I find the inside of my eyelids extremely fascinating”.
