Kaylee slowly approached Barbara. It wasn’t the same as being faced with the mirror version of herself she had encountered back on the Athena. There was something different about this Barbara that Kaylee quite couldn’t put her finger on.

Remembering that the mirror Kaylee worked as an assassin with her mother, Kaylee looked around nervously to see if Barbara was alone.

“You wished to see me?” She asked the woman, keeping her senses on alert in case this was some kind of a trap.

OOC Thanks! I actually went looking for this days ago and after ten minutes couldn’t find it even when I looked back two weeks. Strange, I’ll put it down to my new glasses :-)

Barbara kept one eye on Kaylee and another on the crowd. “My daughter is dead if that means anything to you. I wanted to speak with you before I finally get some closure”.

Kaylee felt a deep pain when she heard that her mirror counterpart was dead. As much as the other Kaylee had been full of hate and rage, it was still a bit of a shock to know that she was dead.

“I am sorry for your loss,” Kaylee finally said, after calming her emotions with a few deep breaths. She looked at Barbara trying to read this other woman. She looked identical to Kaylee’s own mother, but this Barbara was as opposite as could be from the Barbara Baxter in Kaylee’s universe. Kaylee found herself curious as to how Barbara and Kaylee went down the path they had chosen and how they had ended up as assassins for hire.

“What is it that you wished to speak with me about?” Kaylee asked, looking into Barbara’s eyes.

-Kaylee Baxter

Hard eyes took Kaylee’s measure. “I have enemies, and my daughter had even more. Somehow, in some way I can’t explain I felt I needed to warn you that there are people here who may try to hurt me by hurting you”.

Kaylee thought for a moment. “I appreciate your concern. I am curious…” She paused. “What made you choose the line of work that you do?” It was a far more diplomatic way of asking ‘Why do you like killing so much’

-Kaylee Baxter

With no preamble she stated flatly. “I’m human, before this insurrection we had two choices, collaborate or be a slave. For the sake of my daughter and my desire for her not to be a sex slave we trained as diplomats aka assassins. That sweet face of yours got us through many doors for the Cardies and generally we killed what was on the other side. I had no regrets, until now”.

Kaylee felt a twinge of sadness. She could not imagine being a parent and having to make the difficult choices that it seemed Barbara had to make.

“It is never too late to change your path,” Kaylee said. “What will you do now?”

-Kaylee Baxter

With eyes full of hatred she looked over the crowd at Liam. “I’m going to get revenge for my daughter’s death, that’s all that’s left to me now but somehow I wanted you to know it before I did”.

Kaylee was a bit surprised at Barbara’s response. Had everything that had transpired not changed the woman’s point of view?

“Will more killing really accomplish anything?” Kaylee asked. “Can’t you see that this path only leads to more pain and suffering? It has to end somewhere. Why not begin here? With you?”

-Kaylee Baxter

She pointed at Liam over by the dais, “What of him? I just let him murder my daughter and walk away, he just goes free?!”

Kaylee didn’t know the details of the situation involving Kaylee’s death, but the anger and pain coming from Barbara was evident.

“I can only say from my own experience that revenge only leads to further pain,” Kaylee said. “It’s why I became a counselor and then a diplomat. I find joy and peace in helping others.” She let out a sigh, realizing that her words probably did little to change Barbara’s mindset. She wondered if there was anything that could heal the other woman’s wounds and being her peace.

-Kaylee Baxter

Strangely, Barbara’s eyes looked haunted. Her fists clenched and then unclenched and when she spoke it was a hoarse rasp. “You sound just like her, not just in how you speak but in what you’re saying, she tried to get us out of the business when the coup happened, but I talked her into staying with it, staying with me, and now she’s dead”.

Kaylee looked deep into the other woman’s eyes. “Knowing her desire as you do, what do you think Kaylee would have wanted you to do in this moment?” She gestured with a sweep of her arm all around them. “With everything going on, surely you can be a part of the future and help bring the violence and the killing to an end.”

-Kaylee Baxter

The haunted look returned. “I don’t know anything else,” the voice was plaintive, the voice of a child who had been hurt and never recovered.

Kaylee reached out and took one of Barbara’s hands, holding it in both of her own. “There are people here who will help you find a new path, a new beginning. But it must be something that comes from within. Something you desire and are committed to making the changes necessary.”

Looking around, she realized that it was nearly time for her to depart. Still holding onto Barbara’s hand, she gave the other woman a smile. “I hope you find peace.”

-Kaylee Baxter

She looked over at Liam and a snarl crossed her features but she stuffed it down and looked into Kaylee’s eyes. “For you and for you only, I will try”.
